neighors internet down...... asked if I would

I wouldn't let them use it. There are people in this world who are out to get something for nothing and expect others to enable them in their cheapness.

OT: Why shouldn't you have your name/identifying info on your network name? (Especially if secure) I haven't heard this before and wonder if we should change ours at home......

Just recently I realized that a neighbor who would not give us the time of day was using my wireless because I was just too busy to assign a password to it, so it was unsecured. After it appeared that they were using it on a continuing basis (about 2 weeks) and never even asked, I sat down and figured out how to password protect it and took care of that. It appears that once you put your password into their laptop, it will remember it. I'm not the most savy computer person by no means.
How did you figure out your neighbor was using your wireless?

Why can't she continue to use whatever she has been using.... Why does she need access to your secure internet?

Probably because now their daughter is going to be using a CC to buy music, and they want to put that CC info out on a *secure* network! Not the unsecure ones they've been using.

Kinda cracks me up...

no I know she had a problem with her internet company a few months ago... and got upset and cancelled it....

I'm wondering what problem SHE had with the Internet company? Or did THEY have a problem with her? Like downloading illegal stuff? Who really canceled who?

I just realized that this thread is like the one I posted to yesterday on the Community Board. Really, there are too many bad things that could happen if you give out a password.

That cheap family could just go to the library or Starbucks or wherever. Just say NO!

I accessed unsecured networks whenever I could after Katrina as it took 10 months to get internet service installed. It was a difficult year for all of us. I am happy to pay for it now.

I currently don't have internet in Little Rock as I cut off Comcast until my construction is completed. I just spend the night there and go to my sister's to use my computer - I just leave it there. I can use my iphone to check for email and messages.

How did you figure out your neighbor was using your wireless?

I use trend security software and it tells me when someone is using my network. My wireless light comes on on my router when it's in use so I check to see whos using it. I have 3 other wireless devices in my home and knew none were turned on. She had her system named her name "lisaPC".

op here.... what on eye openning thread this has been for me.... so glad i came here to ask my question...

I'll just repeat I totally trust my neighbor.... but now that I know all the risks i don;t want to leave myself open.... don't know what a 'friend " "uncle" using the computer at my neighbors could download

also I never realized how vunlerable i left my computer.... by using a very identifable name to our network..... and placing our modem/router so the signal would reach our neighbors....
the following article was an eyeopener for me http://www.ehow.com/how_4666341_keep-network-safe-being-hacked.html.......especially the part where the author keeps his router inside a ventilated desk drawer with a few books around it to dampens the signal just enough to prevent it from being broadcast around the neighborhood

give them the password, just make sure file sharing is turned off. Wait 3 days and change the password. I have an iphone , and when ever I go to any of my friends houses they give me the password for the wireless.. its a common thing.. :-)

How do you do this, or how do you know it's turned off?

File sharing is done on the administrator side when you open up the modem settings.

If you have your modem set to your name or make some reference to who it is, it makes it easier for a hacker to figure out your password, pet's name, house number, phone number, or possible your kids name. Most people leave it generic to remember it easily, so every one in the house can remember it. You also don't want to leave it as the same password as other things like email, bank accounts, CC accounts, or whatever else you have a password set to.

Like the modem set up here is just some letters and numbers, with the password being the same. It's also a higher speed connection for better online gaming, so most people would want to use this connection over the crappy cheap connection.

Let this be a lesson to anyone thinking about letting the neighbors borrow their passwords/internet. This article was in the Newspaper. I also know of elderly lady this happend to and after and ONLY AFTER the sheriffs dept did a full search of her house did they find out that she had done the same and let a neighbor use her internet, they called in more search warrants and bingo they found what they were looking for but the sweet little grandma had to go through a lot before everything was settled.. All I know is that scared the heck out of me and NO WAY NO HOW would I ever allow anyone to use ours.. Also the newspaper article is about a 18 year old, so you just never know..I know its sad but you just never know.

Like I said never take a chance, why in the world would anyone want to risk that? Ya may want to inform your other neighbors that don't have thier internet locked down.. If you wanna be a good neighbor let them borrow a cup of sugar not your internet!!!

Im not really sure if I can post this newspaper link here? I mean it a DW board and it doens't seem to go along with the theme but you did ask. Here is part of the article and if you want/need more info or proof that I am telling the facts here is a link to the article..

Steven, of Robert E. Lee Road, was charged after investigators conducted a search at one of Logan's neighbor's homes. The neighbor is considered a witness and was not identified, Byrd said.

"It turned out the downloads were not made on their computers," Byrd said. "They then told us that they'd given their password to access their secured wireless Internet service to their neighbor, Mr. Logan."

We never give our wireless password out. We just don't do it.

Go to the library, Starbucks, heck even McDonald's has free Wi-Fi.. use it.

Lots of coffee shops, like Panera and similar too.

No I wouldn't. You don't know how long it is going to take to fix their internet or they might have cancel it to save money and are trying to use your for free. When internet is down all it takes is a call to the company to fix it. As other said I had a petsitter download things illegally and I also got a not so friendly note.

Wow. I know to access our wireless, someone needs the WEP code, but it's just printed on the back of the router. Is there a way to change the WEP code into a different password?

Log into the router as the administrator-and do three things-first change the name of the administrator account and its password from the default that it came with which will be printed on the back of the router-most companies use the same default and you can secure your network all day-if you dont change those-i can sit in my car outside your house-log into your router and see all your traffic-and unlike the PP who said they could see who was on their network-you cant see me doing it.
Change the type of encrytion from WEP to WPA or if possible WPA2-WEP is pretty weak and the algorithim is very easy to crack.
change your password-use one with letters-small and cap numbers and special character-at least 16 characters long.

Here's a question... if you have a secured connection, but the default admin password, is it still possible for someone to access the router?

Pretty sure I read most of the posts, and not sure this has been mentioned or not. Setting your modem/network to non-broadcasting will stop it from appearing to others. If no one can see your network they can't connect.
