Neighbor using YOUR garbage can?

If I'm understanding this correctly, his garbage was in your possession for only a few minutes, in your can which had room and was already on the curb.

Wouldn't bother me one bit.

I wouldn't mind in the situation you described. Now, if the neighbor put their trash in your garbage can and it was too full to fit all of yours in, then I would be irritated. It was nice of them to actually let you know they did it. When we first bought our house one of the neighbors filled our garbage can with tree limbs and we had no room for our garbage. I guess they assumed no one had moved in yet.

We are on great terms with our next door neighbors (on both sides). My neighbor pays a monthly fee for a separate yard waste bin (for grass clippings, small twigs and clean food waste such as peelings) and she said since she never fills it up half way with her own grass clippings that we could throw ours in her bin each week. It saves us money every month! In return, we periodically mow her lawn for her (she gets way behind on yard work because she works 2 jobs) about once a month or so and in the winter I shovel her sidewalk when I do mine. :) We will also put her garbage can & yard waste bin out if she forgets.

Wait - you get garbage service twice a week??? Wow, I'm surprised anyone gets that.

We get our trash picked up every Monday and Thursday.
Paper recycling picked up every other Friday, cans/glass/plastic the other Fridays.
April-Sept. vegetation picked up every Friday.
Leaves in the fall picked up(raked into the street) when necessary.
Bulk once a quarter.

It's included in our taxes, so no paying seperately and no limit. We could have 20 bags out there if we so chose.
Here, the neighbor could have just tossed the bag on the curb, didn't even have to be in a can.
I vote no big deal.

Yikes! Here that would mean your neighbors would get charged for an extra can.

We get garbage pick up once a week and we are charged by the can - and specifically by the size of the can. There are two sizes. If I have empty space in the can I've already paid for, the neighbors are welcome to it.

Since the kids left home, we only pay for a small can twice a month.

You pay per can of garbage???

Wait - you get garbage service twice a week??? Wow, I'm surprised anyone gets that.

I can't believe some people only get garbage picked up once a week!!

We have Tuesday garbage, Wed recyclables papers/cans(e-waste goes out with cans, old computers, TV's etc), Thurs. Garden waste -leaves, grass clipping, shrubs, tree branches etc and Friday is regular garbage pickup again. There is only one day a week where nothing gets picked up. Mattresses, couches, Fridges, Dryers etc can go out with regular garbage or you can call and they will do a special pick up for it.

We don't have the option to pay for extra garbage. Once a week we get one can for waste, one can for recyclables. Once a month we can put extra out, no charge.

Another vote for no biggie that the neighbor put his garbage in your can.

To the OP's question - YES this would bother me, since they did that without asking.

Usually - just before a vacation - we will ask if we can put a bag of trash in our neighbors bin so that it gets out that week. And - they will do the same.

We pay for our garbage removal around our area - and people do have different levels of service, (different sizes of limited service or unlimited).

The specific service we have is on a Wednesday - others in our subdivision have a service that comes Monday. If a "Monday" neighbor forgot - I wouldn't mind if they used up "the rest of my space".

But - no neighbors near us are currently using diaper genies.:sick: That particular story is just nasty, and I wouldn't be too happy about that either

On this one, I'm a little torn. Obviously it had no negative impact so I would let it go. however in our neighborhood, we have separate trash services. Mine technically has a limit to number of bags, but to my knowledge it has never been enforced. That being said, we have been doing a lot of work on our house in terms of decluttering, reflooring etc. So there have been many weeks lately where we have filled our trash.

We also have to leave our trash up against our houses (no more than 5 feet) per city ordinance. That makes it more personal to me because you would be walking on to someobdy's property right up to their house to do that. I wouldn't get steamed over it, but I wouldn't be overly thrilled either.

We do this sometimes, well our neighbors put their stuff into our can(s). It isn't a problem but the neighbor does ask first. One day he came over and asked if our yard waste container had space in it, we hadn't done any yard work so ours was empty, we told him it was empty and he asked if he could put stuff from his yard in it. They had done a lot of work in their backyard and had lots of clippings to get rid of, they filled our container completely and it wasn't a problem.

Your trash is picked up twice a week!!??!! That is awesome.

Ours is picked up once a week. We pay by the size of the garbage can we use. Ours only fits two 13 gallon filled trash bags. We can squeeze 3 in if we really compact the trash. For this and a recycle can, we pay about $40 a month.

In your case, I would just smile and wave to the neighbor. Not a big deal if it's being picked up twice a week, you had room in your can and he figured it was being dumped.

I remember a trash issue from when I was a kid. Mom would wait until it was dark the night before trash was picked up. She would give each of us kids a bag of trash and ask us to go find a neighbors can that had some room and add our trash to theirs. (we had our own too, but we created a lot of trash, lol)

Add me to the list of people who day "wouldn't bother me." I don't see make any kind of deal over it in this situation. If it added to my cost, sure. If it was a neighbor trying to avoid garbage service themselves by habitually using your can, absolutely. But, in the situation described, I'd not give it another thought.

Op your post hit a sore spot with me. Last summer we came back from a 3 week vacation and when we went to put some garbage in our bin (which we had left completely empty) it was full to the top with the lid not able to close. My dh confronted my next door neighbour and asked him not to put his garbage in our bin and his reply was that the housekeeper must have done it accidently thinking it was his bin. Ok, but where did you think your garbage was every week when your bin was empty on garbage day?:confused3

To make matters worse he left his garbage in there for the next 2 days instead of taking his bags out! Thankfully we only had one bag of our own and were able to squeeze it in. Sometimes he will still put one of his bags in if his is full but only if the bin is on the sidewalk, which still iritates me as he has never asked if this is ok.

It would bother me and has bothered me. My neighbor across the street always has overflowing garbage and has used my can in the past (I know since I went to put out another bag in the morning and there wasn't room for it). We pay for our pickup (get to choose what size & how many cans we want). We only get garbage picked up once a week; recyclables only once every 2 weeks.

I started putting out my garbage can early in the morning of pickup (they only used my can if I put it out the night before).

It wouldn't bother me at all with the way we are charged for garbage. I might find it somewhat strange, but it would be okay with me. If it was causing you an extra charge, or if they were avoiding a charge, then I might feel differently. We have never been charged per can (we can put out as much as we want 2x per week), so I am not sure how I would feel about it in that situation.

I wouldn't think about it for a second.

I honestly can't believe anyone would invest any thought into this action that didn't hurt anyone, didn't cost anyone anything, didn't affect anyone in any way shape or form.

You asked.

Actually chime in and say that I HATE this! It happens to us at least once a month - correction, it happens to me once a month THAT I KNOW OF. It might happen more often but I catch it once a month or so. How do I know? Because the jerks put their trash in my trash can AFTER the truck has come! Earlier this month someone decided to dump all of their Christmas tree limbs in our bin after the truck had come and there were so many that the bin was overflowing and couldn't shut. I was FUMING. After some expletives I took it all out and just dumped it in the street. Sorry, I'm generally a very nice person, but I can't deal with that. Another time someone dumped their dog poop in their after the trash had come. That one I was not about to dig out so left it there, but dog poop rotting away in the hot summer disgusted me every time I opened the trash and got a whiff.

I'll top that. In the community where we own a home, it's mostly a vacation destination. Because of that, in the winter months (December, January, February) the trash only comes ONCE A MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Huge bummer for those that live there year-round!

OP, it wouldn't have bothered me a bit. I would've just waved and told him to have a good day. We pay for 2 garbage cans (4 trash bags) to be picked up. Anything more is $2 each. Often times, if my next door neighbor needs to throw a bag in and we have room then he does, vice versa. If not, then we put the sticker that we purchased on the extra bag. Really no biggie. I just look at it as being neighborly.

We're neighborly. The word is if you missed the pickup go ahead and use ours. We do that here all the time.

Wow, garbage is included in my taxes. Garbage is twice a week, and recyclables once a week, I can put out up to 6 bags, don't have to be in a can and bulk goes out with the regular garbage either day.

I was just sitting here annoyed that because tommorow is a holiday and it is my garbage and recycle day there won't be a pickup and while they will pick up the garbage on Tuesday they won't pick up the recyclables until next week. Ok i will shut up now since I have great service compared to some people.

Nah, this wouldn't even begin to bother me.

We had neighbors that appeared to fall on hard times (bank foreclosed on their place) but long before that happened we noticed they were no longer putting a trash can out and after a bit we caught on that they were putting garbage into our can after we put it on the curb. I guess they stopped paying the garbage bill. Anyway we never said a word, I figured it wasn't costing us anything and maybe it was helping them.

The people that moved into that house after them did tick me off though because they stole our trash ben. They are supplied by the trash company and ours had a piece of the lid that was broken off when they brought it to us. Didn't hurt the functionality of it but it was distinct. Came home from work one night and the ben was gone from the curb. Brand new neighbors bring their ben the the curb next week and there was the broken place! Blew my mind but we never said anything to them. Which is good, they became horrible neighbors for a variety of reasons but the man had an explosive temper and I'm glad we never got in his crosshairs.
