hi.
We have the opportunity to go to the parks for our very first visit (first time to WDW, first time to Florida) this July. I know it will be very HOT and humid. From a few posts on the Disboards people have told me to drink lots and lots of water, take a mid afternoon break, use sunscreen, wear hats. But i have a few questions.

1) WATER: is the FREE ice-water you get at Counter Service locations filtered tap water? Does it taste ok? and do you have to purchase food to ask for ice water, or can we just go and ask for cups of water? are there any filtered water fountains in the parks?

2) SUNSCREEN: i know it will be hot and sweating and sunscreen may "run off". so what sunscreens do people recommend for this type of weather?

3) since its hot we are thinking of wearing shorts. but then i thought about the seats on the outdoor rides. are the seats hot from the heat? or are they covered in material?

TIA

OK......

1) I am not a big fan of the water in Florida...to me it always has that hint of swamp in it, but thats just me, and yes the water is filtered tap water with ice

2) Sunscreen these days are made for the heat, slather it on in the morning, a bit more in the mid day and you should be fine

3) wear shorts or be miserable!

We have traveled in the summer numerous times....The key for us has always been to make sure you are at rope drop every day in the park you are going to..Hit the attractions you most want first thing, and hit them hard until lunch time. have a nice lunch in the park, and then immediately head back to your resort for pool time, nap time, or basic relaxation till about 4pm-5pm...plan to head back to the park, hit a couple of attractions before dinner, maybe a parade, have a nice dinner in the park....follow that up with park time without the sun beating on you, and whatever nighttime show that particular park has (ie; illuminations, wishes, etc)....that is our recipe for dealing with the heat....the key is spending the hottest part of the day in the pool or taking a nice nap!

I absolutely hate the heat! But...I've been invited to tagalong in July. My friends do not want to hit the parks early...ugh, so we will hit them at the hottest part of the day. I plan to take lots of breaks, go into shops and splash water on my face at every bathroom break. If I can find shade, I'll sit for a bit. I'll eat ice cream. Also, the lines are usually air conditioned so aside from walking from place to place, I'm hoping it won't kill me!

1. I don't know if it's filtered, but I think it is. We've had no issues with "taste". Yes, it's free and you don't need to buy anything. Many QS places make cups of it in advance, so they just hand it to you.

2. Frankly, we just buy the CVS store brand spray, or Wal-Mart no name brand. Never had any issues with getting burned...unless we forgot to spray.

3. Yes, wear shorts. I feel horrible for people who don't. Many of the rides are indoors, so everything is a/c cool, and even the things that are outside aren't really an issue. The hottest thing I can think of is Tomorrowland Speedway. It's outside, but I don't ever recall actually being "burned" by the seats. There's always butts in them, so they never get exposed to the sun long enough. :D

That's awesome!

1) I moved from Indiana to Florida (have since left). Honestly, I didn't notice anything with the water. Can't respond to the filtered water in the parks or the counter service water. There are water fountains through the park.

2) Sunscreen has been answered.

3) Shorts are a must!! Period, end of story.

Like gmboy95 said, go in the morning, head back to the resort in the afternoon, head back to the parks in the evening. It's going to be muggy, just plan on that, but the ambient temperature will be much more pleasant in the mornings and evenings. I've told my northern friends, Florida in June-July-August is like living on the sun, at least for us northerners.

Make sure you have your FPs and ADRs in advance. One less thing to worry about.

Most importantly – HAVE FUN!! :jumping1:

Cooling towels (I like the Mission brand best). Wouldn't go without my HydroFlask. Small fan, mister or not. Antiperspirant (or Body Glide, if you prefer) on anything that chafes ;) And do your fellow park-goers a favor--when you reapply that sunscreen, do the same with the deodorant LOL It seriously does make me feel human again.

1. We got water at the counters, then poured it into Brita filtered bottles, and it tasted good. The filters were also good enough to make the tap water in the room taste good, and that was so bad I had trouble brushing my teeth with it unfiltered. I wouldn't hesitate to put water from a fountain into the filter bottle.

2. Sport sunscreen. We use Target brand spray sport SPF 30, and reapply liberally.

3. People are on and off the rides in the shade, so the seats are never in the sun for long if at all.

The hottest thing I can think of is Tomorrowland Speedway. It's outside, but I don't ever recall actually being "burned" by the seats. There's always butts in them, so they never get exposed to the sun long enough. :D

That ride is an inferno on the coldest of days. Seriously. We last rode it early in the morning on a 60-something degree day, and it felt like the surface of the sun.

Number one tip that has made my trips enjoyable:
Psychologically accept that the sun is going to be relentless, and that your entire being will feel hot and sticky... covered in a mess of sweat, humidity, and layers of sunscreen being reapplied all day.

People who can't come to terms with the humidity and heat will feel it weighing on them the entire trip. People who embrace it might even associate it with the joy of a WDW vacation. I might even go as far as to say that in my December trip, I felt like something was missing.

Agree with previous posters. It doesn't sound like you have little kids too which adds an element of heightened awareness. I also suggest bringing a couple washcloths from the hotel and using to wipe face and neck as they get sweaty. Dress for comfort. Wear wicking clothes. If water taste is a concern (it does taste a little more like well water than city water) know you can bring in your own unopened bottled water. And what's hot to one isn't hot for another. I find coming from high humidity Michigan to Florida isn't too big of a difference. But when I lived in Phoenix Florida would destroy me. The difference in humidity is probably more impactful than temperature. IMO.

I suppose it depends on how you tolerate heat, but I think WDW is really quite enjoyable in the summer. I avoided it years because I imagined it to be much worse than it actually is.

It is humid, and it often goes up to 91 or so, but then it rains. The best approach is simply to plan a short break right around storm o'clock. After the storm, the parks tend to be fairly empty and very enjoyable.

1. ) FL water used to be swampy, but these days, most all of it is filtered. The old water fountains are all gone.

The trouble with (only) getting water at the CS is that it is simply too inconvenient for us. That said, we do a combo. We bring bottled water, but also ask for extra water every time we eat. Keep everyone well hydrated. I also find, that once in a while, an apple juice or lemonade is best. DO limit your alcohol! Oh, Universal has the new Coke unlimited machines, but to use the ones in the parks- you have to buy one of their refillable mugs (Grr!).

Oh, among bottled water....I avoid Zephrhills. It is Florida spring water, which = that swampy taste you describe.

2. Suncreen - except for swimming, water parks and Epcot- you really aren't really out in the sun all day. We spend most of the day out an about. mind, I do have a few pointers....in summer, I'd never stand 45minutes in the sun waiting for anything. We prefer to skip things like the AK Nemo show, thanks. I also said above, taking an afternoon break in the peak heat of the day is also very important. folks who try to slug it out are exhausted by 7pm. The heat just does that. If you take a break, you'll be rewarded after dark. So the brand of sunscreen isn't all that important, just be certain to wear some every day. Er, so long as you don't suffer any reactions to heat/sunscreen. Some of the sunscreen chemicals aren't al l that good for your skin.

OH, and I just saw a warning last night about possible ovarian cancer risk of using talc. That was new to me!

Avoid runny mascara!

We tend to apply sunscreen in the morning when we are getting dressed. We re-apply if we go swimming/Epcot days or if we were offsite and couldn't easily take an afternoon break. Otherwise, I carry a small tube of chapstick-style sunscreen (in case we forget) and maybe re-apply just to like our noses. I only carry a bigger bottle on beach days, Epcot days, or if we were staying offsite.

3. We wear shorts. I've never really given this subject much thought at WDW/US. It isn't much of an issue though because most rides are shaded/indoors or are heavily occupied. That said, we tend to avoid very short-shorts. Mid-length and longer shorts are more comfortable. For males, cargo shorts were always the way to go in the past. These days, they buy you a trip through the metal detectors.

The other big wardrobe consideration is to assume you will get wet. Wet denim can be miserable. (think Kali and rainy days).Summer rain is unpredictable and very heavy. Wear water tolerant shoes with good treads. Some fabrics become transparent when wet.

then again.....fabrics that are silk-like are great: thin, dry quickly, can be hand washed, compact in luggage. Even in summer, we happily layer summer tank-style tops. Also consider athletic-style wear.

That ride is an inferno on the coldest of days. Seriously. We last rode it early in the morning on a 60-something degree day, and it felt like the surface of the sun.

Yeah, it's hot. I actually find that the queue is the worst part. Once you're in the car and moving, it's not quite as bad.

I've literally never been in WDW when the weather is "cold". Almost all my trips have been summertime and the few non-summer trips we did in 2015/2016 we got lucky and they had unusually warm weather. It was 82 degrees on Christmas Day. But there was one evening where the sun had gone down and temps dropped into the 60s (the coldest I've ever experienced at WDW). We immediately thought of going to TS to warm up a little.

We always do the free ice water and, while it's filtered and not that bad, I'm still not crazy about the taste of it. So we put a few Crystal Light or other water flavors packets in my backpack and just add that to the ice water. It covers the taste without any problems.

Misting fans are our favorite cool-down. Just make sure you buy the big cheap ones from Walmart or other places off-site instead of buying the ones onsite. It's much cheaper. Although, I will say, the one time we forgot our mister fans at home and had to buy the Disney one, we ended up with one that wouldn't stop leaking. We stopped at the next place where they sold them and they replaced it for free, so we were happy with that!

3. Yes, wear shorts. I feel horrible for people who don't. :D
Lots of folks don't ever wear shorts, and look quite happy. plenty of folks get to feeling like they are 'too old' to wear shorts. I also think many FL natives prefer long pants all year.

If you wear summer fabrics, then you can wear long pants and be quite happy. Skirts are also an option some folks love.

The other consideration is hair. It pays to keep a pony-tail elastic handy if you'll use it!

Braids are also great at WDW.

A ponytail + rollercoaster/extreme rides +heat isn't always the best combo.

I've gone for a week the past two Augusts and have these tips:

-Carry a HydroFlask water bottle with a neoprene carrier with a shoulder strap. Fill it to the top with ice from your resort ice machine, then water. Refill at counter service places at the parks throughout the day.
-Wear sunblock that is waterproof and reapply every few hours. You'll sweat it off.
-Wear athletic clothes--my favorites are wicking under armour or nike shirts and Sparkle Skirts which are running skirts with built in shorts
-Use Body Glide on anything that will chafe
-Wear Sketchers Go Walk flip flops
-My daughters really like to use cooling towels and misting fans, but I don't think they make a huge difference
-Take breaks in the afternoon either back at the resort pool or at indoor show-style attractions

Have fun!
