Hi everyone. I have a blank stitch & zip case for an ipad. I want to use a pattern for cross stitch of the castle to personalize it but it is fabric for needlepoint. My question is usually needlepoint is done with yarn not floss. How do I determine the correct colors of the yarn and also if I use floss how mant strands should I use?

Thanks for all your help!!

I've always done needlepoint with floss. Well, if you mean embroidery when you say "needlepoint". All of my crafting skill is homegrown and pieced together so I don't know hardly any proper technical terms. :dunno:

So is it just a cotton fabric that you'd like to cross stitch on? Or do you want to embroider it with DMC floss?

The number of strands that I use when I embroider depends on how "thick" I want my stitching to look. For an average-thickness line, I use 3 strands, but I often find myself using all 6 strands as well. Especially for outlining.

if it is aida cloth you could get away with anywhere from 2-3 strands of dmc thread. if it is true needlepoint material (bigger holes and needs filled in to be completely filled in to not be see-through) you would need to use yarn or more than 6 strands of floss. i would suggest going to a craft store and finding the dmc floss than going over to the yarn aisle and matching colors. that is probably the "easiest" method to matching the colors. good luck with your project. :)

Thanks for your replies. It is needlepoint fabric so yes the holes are bigger. I think I will do what you suggest and try to match the floss to yarn. I did one project with 6 strands of floss and didnt like how it came out.

Thanks!!
