Need to start budgeting for BABY!!

Do not get an all in one crib unless you are only planning on having one child. My sister has an all in one crib and planning on another child so she will either have to get another crib or a bed for her oldest.

well it worked for us. DD is now almost 11 and LOVES her full size bed. We hope to get preggo at the end of the year and will buy another 3 in one crib. The 2nd child will have that bed until they are grown. Is been great for us.

Any suggestions for rockers or gliders? Or where to find one? I think this will be the hardest thing to pick out....

Actually, to tag onto her question, which is better - a rocker or a glider? I have my grandmom's rocker which I'm thinking of keeping in the baby's room (I'll need to get cushions for it...)

Subscribing to this thread...we are TTC. :) Keep the good ideas coming!

I don't have time to read through it all....but if no one else has suggested - join freecycle! I just got a double electric breast pump for free - I just have to buy new tubing and bottles (the part that comes in contact w/the breastmilk).

I have found essentially all I need for baby at garage sales and on Craig's List. I had things from my other two, but I wanted more updated items - the other stuff will be 7-8 years old. Oh, I am not even pg yet - lol - just planning and trying!

Wow! That took me a while to read through! But anyways--here it goes!
*Infant Car Seat--I would look at these:
-Graco Snugride 32--rear facing 5 to 32 pounds and up to 32" tall. Fit's 97% of 1-year olds, Lock-off's...etc.
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2844620
*Chicco Keyfit--rear faces 4 to 30 pounds
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3155366
*Peg Perego Primo Viaggio--Rear faces 5 to 30 pounds
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3417025
*Britax Chaperone--rear faces 4 to 30 pounds
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3417025
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Car seat base for second car:
this is much easier and cheaper than buying a second infant seat. I would buy two extra bases, one for dh's car and then an extra for grandparents, babysitter, etc.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shopping Cart Cover:
Not absolutley necessary, but I like it. You won't use it till the baby's around 7 or 8 months old. The infant seat works perfectly till then.
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3190419
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3331861
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Convertible Car Seat:
I wouldn't buy this right now--I would wait till your son or daughters closer to a year old. That way, you won't just have a car seat not being used. I would decide on one now, but just wait to buy it.
*Graco Myride 65
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3532433
*Britax Boulevard
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3477242
*The First Years Tru Fit
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3137030
*Evenflo Triumph Advance
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3537208
*Sunshine Kids Radian
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3499755
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Car Seat Headrest:
These are not all reccomended, but some are fine. The main thing to look for is if it will interfere with the harness straps and baby. Meaning: you need to get one that supports just the head, and then has little to no fabric underneath the rest of the baby. One's like "The Snuzzler" are not reccomended because it is very plushy and if you were to take that out and buckle the baby in, the harness would not fit properly. So, here's a few that would work:
*Boppy Noggin Nest
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3532543
*GoldBug 2-in-1
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10669913
*GoldBug Airflow
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7850646
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Things to not use with car seats:
*Snuzzler
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2967790
*Cradler Head Support
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2580937
*Neck Wings
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2403259
*Seat protectors
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6487077
*Car Seat Covers
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10803956
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Car Mirror:
These are fine, but try to find one that is very soft and cushy--if they are to come unattached, they could be a potential hazard.
*Safety 1st see baby soft mirror
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3502245
*Safe-fit Jumbo auto mirror
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8590933
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Travel System:
If you end up finding a separate car seat and stroller, then omit this part. Here's some ideas:
*Graco Tour
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3445750
*Chicco Cortina
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3156652
*Safety 1st propack
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10196564
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Baby Carrier:
I would suggest trying to find one on craigslist--much cheaper!
*Baby Bjorn
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2564013
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Playard:
This is a great thing to have! Especially because of how long it lasts--from birth up to a few years old :) Here's a few:
*Graco newborn napper playard--the newborn napper is irreplacable!
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10877984
*Graco Travel lite
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7976530

*Boppy happy place playard
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=11046319
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stationary Entertainers (AKA: Exersaucer and Jumperoo)
I like two seperate things--an exersaucer and a jumperoo--they are both great!
*Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2508003
*Evenflo Triple Fun Jungle Exersaucer
http://www.target.com/Evenflo-Triple-Fun-Jungle-ExerSaucer/dp/B001H0GF10/ref=br_1_9?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=15305371&node=15305371&searchRank=pmrank&searchPage=1&searchSize=30&id=Evenflo%20Triple%20Fun%20Jungle%20ExerSaucer
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Swing--another valuable thing--it's your decision, but I would buy a full-size one and then if you need one for the grandparents, then buy a travel one for them.
Here's the ones that I like--Full Size:
*Fisher-Price Precious Planet
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3251256
*Fisher-Price Starlight Papasan Swing--this version is my favorite!
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3090974

Travel Swings:
*Boppy Rock n' Comfort swing
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2835113
*Fisher-Price Rainforest swing
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2815254[/URL
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gym and/ or Playmats--I dunno--it's your call-you either use it or you don't.....It's a nice thing to have, but if you're trying to save money--I wouldn't get one.
*Fisher-Price Precious Planet
[URL="http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3243095"]http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3243095

*Bright Starts Pretty n' Pink
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3537191
I would just lay down a blanket and then a boppy on top of that and then put one of these down in front:It's much cheaper and doesn't take up a lot of room!
*Fisher-Price perfectly pink tummy time mirror
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3243091
Another option is to get one of these:It saves a little bit more room and is very reasonable in price
*Fisher-Price tummy time mat

Infant Positioner: (AKA: sleep pillow, boppy, bumbo)
Boppy=LIFESAVER!!!!!
If you want to find out what you are having, don't get the Boppy till you know...that way you can get a gender specific one. Alrighty--I'll finish my post tomorrow--but I hope I gave you some research material!

Holy Moly! Thanks for the info! (To save you from typing, I did end up buying the "Baby Bargins" book, but thanks for the direct links!!)

Wow! So much info! Thanks! We are going to Babies R Us this weekend in Mobile. I hear it is a small store, but I have never been to one and we have no baby stores in the area.

Wow, I'm glad I live where I do, then... We've got a HUGE Babies R Us, plus one of the baby stores rated highly in Baby Bargains is an hour away, and there are a few "mom & pop" type stores nearby as well. Hope you find what you need!

(Have you tried looking at Target, Walmart, etc.?)

Alrighty--here's part 2 of the installment

Cloth Diapers--okay--this one's gonna be long. I'll post the basics that you'll need to get started. First off is prefolds. It's good to buy a variety and a lot of them, since you'll be using these everyday. There are different sizes, but you should start out by buying mostly newborns and smalls. there's also preemie, so buy a few of those--they're great once they grow out of those to use them as burp cloths or inserts. here's a pic of the different sizes:
prefoldsFeb09.jpg

Next you'll need something to fasten the diapers with. I prefer snappi's over pins. here's a link to both:

-Here's a guide on cloth diapering:http://www.naturalbirthandbabycare.com/cloth-diapering.html

Just wanted to say Congrats, i don't really have any pointers on how to save or were to get the cheapest baby items. I have just 1 daughter 9yo (which was a suprise) and i didn't really ever want anymore till recently. My dh wanted another when dd was still in diapers but i was the one home 24/7 so i said no way. Our dd started asking Santa for a baby sister when whe was 2yo and now she beggs me to have one for her. I have been thinking it would be nice to have another one, but dh says no way guess i should of not been so stubborn years ago huh!

Karenj2 - Went to Babies R Us yesterday. I picked up a few things, a baby book, a sheet and a blanket set. My aunt bought us the highchair I had been looking at. (What a great suprise!) It was nice, and I'm glad we went, but happy that we didn't make a special trip to go. Anything new on your end?

ah1126: Did you know that over in Foley they have a Carter's outlet and an Osh Kosh outlet? I went in the Carter outlet and they have a ton of really cute stuff for very cheap! I forgot to go in the Osh Kosh store. By time we were done wandering through the other stores I was just tired and forgot. It was going to be the last store I hit since it was right by where we had parked. Next time I am going there first. LOL

Can you tell me, do they have any good baby stores worth making a special trip over to Destin for? We are in Pensacola.

We are still TTC, so this doesn't apply to me, but I noticed that a ton of stores are having baby sales this week. While looking through the Sunday sales ads this morning, I saw that Target, Babies R Us, Big Lots, and I think Kmart are all having big sales.

Worm761- Thanks for the info. We have a Carter's and OshKosh here are the outlets in Destin too! Other than that we have a few specialty stores and thats it. Not really much at all. I am guessing I will get most of my things at Target.

Is there anything worth driving to Pensacola to check out?? (Other than Steak and Shake and Cinnabon?? :rotfl2: )

Pensacola has nothing. We have Target, Walmart, Sears, and Penneys. We do have a really nice store called Storkland. It is a boutique though with boutique prices. We bought our stroller, diaper bag, stroller carrier/bag thing, and the rain cover there and spent just over $600. We got the Peg Perego Pliko P3. This is Robbie's first and only child so I let him go nuts on some things. He fell in love with this stroller. We scoped them out at Disney and everyone we talked to loved theirs. It weighs 16 pounds but is a full size stroller. It fully reclines and has a 5 point harness that separates from the seat at the back so the baby has full range of motion. The snack tray can come off so it becomes an umbrella stroller when she gets older. And best of all, it folds up like an umbrella stroller with just one hand! It is easy to set up and take down. I think it was around $370 for the stroller. It was the only place in town we could buy one. Peg Perego is not sold in big box stores for the most part.

Oh another great place I found clothes cheap is Ross. Do you have one over there? I got a 9 piece layette set for $10 there! Other than that Pensacola has nothing great to offer. Definitely not worth the drive for just baby stuff.

worm761- Thanks for the info. If we find our way to Pensacola again we will check out Storkland.

Congrats on Little Nemo! Mine are 7 & 9.

Some of my favorite baby items were:

Clothing:
Baby nightgowns-I didn't cover mine with any blankets when I was sleeping, so the baby nightgown was perfect b/c the arms had little covers for the hands and the legs had room to wiggle but stayed covered.
Buntings- They are like a much thicker version than a nightgown & have slots for the car seat buckle.

Bath time:
Hooded towels
Baby bathtub
Lavendar nighttime baby wash

Equipment:
Portable bassinet-this was convenient with baby #1 and needed with baby #2. I didn't let my kids sleep in their own room until they were about 2. The $600 crib got used only for holding blankets & stuffed animals and didn't get slept in once. The bassinet on the other hand was well used. It was low to the ground, light to carry, and had an adjustable back & vibrate feature. DD slept in this until she was too long beside my bed so I could check on her frequently. DS had reflux & threw up after every bottle so he had to sit up 2 hours after every feeding per the dr(which was most of the time) for 6 months. The adjustable back & strap in kept him in a safe upright position and the cover was removable & washable, which had to be done daily. I loved that bassinet.
Narrow playpen- I moved this to whatever room I was in, 1st one was deluxe with changing thing, mobile, etc. It was bulky to move room to room. 2nd one I got was basic & smaller and much easier to move around.
