To the poster...I'm so sorry that your family has been sick. I can only imagine how depressing and frustrating it must be to have to re-schedule at the last minute. If you are anything like me, you have been anticipating and planning for many months. On the bright side, this is just a minor set-back and nothing due to a major family tragedy. I do think that you made the right call. Last year we had to cancel my son's birthday party b/c he had been running a fever the day prior (no other symptoms). We had a big party planned...homemade cake, personalized favors, non-refundable deposit...the whole works. Even though he claimed to feel fine, I didn't want to risk getting any of his friends sick. I'm very sensitive about this subject b/c I'm a pre-school teacher. There is nothing I DESPISE more than the parent who doses their sick kid up on fever reducer, cough supressent, etc... and then sends them on to school with no concern for the other people they will encounter. Enough said, I'm getting angry just thinking about it. Anyway, I'm glad that you were able to work things out. I know that you will all have a super time. Gosh, July is so soon, you really don't even need to un-pack your bags! ;)

so you are saying that anyone who has a cold or a temp must stay at home and not go to walt disney world? what a load of crap. omg lets anounce it on the news quick before anyone else goes who has a cold. Everyone who maybe getting the sniffles, STAY AT HOME. You plonkers!:dance3: I have never heard something so stupid in my life.

Whoa she doesn't need to grow up. She is right you have no idea what being sick can do to someone. I guess until you have a baby that goes stiff, her eyes roll back and she is making one of the worst noises you have ever heard you have no idea. Viruses aren't just simple they can cause a lot of damage. Maybe you need to change your atitude towards that

I know it's scary, but febrile seizures aren't dangerous. In the OP's case, I probably would've gone, since they're not flying, but kept the child confined to the room until the fever broke.

What are you worried about?:rotfl:

*Plays twilight zone music*

I'm out.

really? :sad2: I am sorry but you are acting like a 12 yr old.It IS very rude to go to a place like wdw where there are lots of kids (some like stated before are on WISH trips) that do not need your illness. I am sorry "your out" but you were rude to the pp.
oh by the way out of what? maybe its my old age showing

So when my opinion differs to yours, it's called an attitude?

Maybe you should grow up.

Nope not because your opinion is different just because the rudeness that came with that opinion. As for growing up, seems you need to really do a lot of that. Great comeback from a so called adult though.

I don't need to change anything about my attitude. I think you are blowing things way out of proportion here. I have a right to express my opinion.

You know what, when you watch your infant in the hospital struggling to breathe BECAUSE of a virus than maybe you will be more considerate but I guess that because my child almost died I along with outher concerned parents are "immature" and "blowing things out of proportion". (I so need a smiley that rolls its eyes)

Hmmmm, I wonder how many of those people losing loved ones from the flu are thinking what a great opinion you have to expose others to viruses that may very well be deadly to them. YOU never know what a virus can do to anyone else. Way to show how inconsiderate many of America's youth are today. I guess maybe it should be renamed Generation MeMeMe

Why not try reading the others posts before you type next time. We're not talking about sniffles or colds. We're talking a virus and vomiting. There is a big difference!

Plumeria, I hope to whatever God you believe in that you never have a seriously sick child like kevschickee and I have had. Like kevschickee, if I had brought my DD into a hotel room after someone in there had RSV VIRUS, it could easily kill my child. No one needs to grow up here but you. Maybe you can learn compassion for others while you're at it.

This can easily affect healthy term babies as well. My oldest almost did die from RSV in 1994. My youngest also had RSV and both were healthy children. Now my youngest has asthma that is seriously bad this year and she picked up so much crud from school because some parents thought it was fine to send kids to school. Very sad that many do not understand the dangers that a virus can have to others. But it shows that unfortunately our society is less compassionate and more about what they get out of it for themselves.

I'm sorry your child one is also at risk.

this isn't always true with stomach bugs they can be passed after the fever and they can be contagious without a fever

But the OP said the virus was fever/coughing, not stomach. :confused3
Exactly. Yes, you can possibly be contagious with a stomach bug without fever, but it is not likely. Some people actually never run a fever with some bugs, but the other symptoms are obvious. Once you manifest vomiting ect, you have likely been cotagious for 24 hours, and once you have stopped vomiting ect for 24 hours you are in the clear. Most people you think you infected with no fever or symptoms actually got it from you before you got sick. Even daycares have a "feverand vomitng free for 24 hours" rule for returning. That is because you can be pretty sure the person is NOT contagious after 24 hours with no fever or vomiting.

Please, if you know you're sick or someone in your family is sick, stay home! There are make-a-wish people at WDW and other people with all sorts of health issues that can make them vulnerable to even the most benign virus. I may have to have my adrenal glands removed in the next year, which could make any virus potentially life threatening for me. We still want a chance to be able to go out and experience things. It's just common courtesy.

When I'm sick, I use grocery delivery and only use drive-thru pharmacies to minimize my contact with others.

If you have a virus, I don't believe hand sanitizers do much. As far as I know, it only works on bacteria.

Hand sanitizers DO kill some viruses but not all. As to the make a wish families ect at disney there is no way to completely sheild them from sickness. They take a risk going into any public place. They are going to come into contact with things and there's no way around that. As stated above if you have been fever free for 24 hours and do not currently have vomiting ect you can be reasonably sure you will not infect anyone. I don't mean to be callous, but I think it is unfair to suggest that everyone else stay home for every little sniffle. People who are immunocompromised have to be proactive in protecting their own health and not rely on anyone else to "stay home" when they are ill. I know b/c I lived through it for 6 years with my grandfather. While we made a point not to vist their home when we knew we were ill, life did not stop for him. We just carried sanitizer and when his counts were really low he wore a mask outside the house. Yes, you should not do disney puking or with a fever, but I would NOT stay home for a little cough. I don't think it is fair to expect others to stay home either.

I'm not suggesting they stay home for everything, but as a common courtesy to others, if you are really sick, you probably should stay home unless it's some sort of emergent need that no one else can help with. There are times when being proactive for us on the immunocompromised end can only go so far. I can only control what I do, I can't control what others do. How many times have there been posts about people dosing up their kids and heading out to the parks when they've had a fever and vomiting? How many times have I heard, well I was puking this morning, but I'm going to fly home anyway? Use common sense people. Just don't be surprised if I don't "fill in all available space" next to you while you're hacking away.

Make a wish patients are cleared from their doctors before they can travel. Their blood count have to up in order to go. Yes, they are more immuno compromised than the normal person but believe me they wouldn't be there if a virus could really do a lot of damage. I work at a children's hospital on the oncology floor and the only resrictions from others that we have is no current fever or fever within the last 24 hours.

Using grocery delivery and drive thru places is a great thing to do but that is not reality for most!!

How many children have you seen throw up at Disney! I have seen quite a few and I can bet that it happened because of being tired or change in diet. Really it is each families choice if whether they feel comfortable going on vacation. Just my two cents!

All you need to do to get rid of any threat from RSV possibly left it a hotel room is bring a can of lysol with you. Spray down EVERYTHING soft, hard whatever with it and spray some into the vents. Leave the room for 15-20 min and it should be fine when you return. Problem solved. In fact, this worst for just about and infectious disease that could possibly be left over in a hotel room. This is what we had to do with Pops when we traveled with him. He never got sick on vacation. It is something the oncologist suggested when we told him we were taking the first vacation after the diagnosis. He siad that as long as we thoroughly sprayed everthing and let it sit undisturbed for 15 min it would get rid of almost anything, and he is right. This is the method we used in the pathogens lab.

say whatever you want to make it ok with you but if you know you are sick before you go it is just rude to go anyway....and no I am not talking about the sniffles. If you KNOW you have a fever or throwing up its better for everyone even you for you to wait until your better. If you have a child that is throwing up and then they are fine the day you leave chances are they will get sick again because they have not had a chance to get better.Florida weather is hard on people who live here...this kind of heat is going to make someone who is sick just feel worse>
I agree wdw is GREAT but it is not worth it to go when your sick.

I just can't respond to you any more. you are 25 but you aren't acting like it. Maybe one day when you are a mom you will understand

Not every depends on blood counts to let them know they're OK to travel. For example, with no adrenal glands, people with my disease cannot manufacture stress hormones, but we may have perfectly fine blood counts. I must carry solu-cortef act-o-vial injectibles with me at all times. If I vomit once, I double my hydrocortisone, vomit twice, I inject and head to the emergency room. It's actually way more complicated than that, but that's the quick and dirty. So in my case, if you're vomiting and I catch something from you, just that one simple act can land me in the ER. I suspect that there are people with other conditions that may be in a similar boat.

Personally, I try not to see any kids vomit, because it'll be a vomitfest. I was specifically talking about the people that say my kid had a fever and puked, I gave them some tylenol, threw them in the stroller and headed out to the parks. The ones that you don't see puking or don't look like they have/had a fever because they're drugged up.

And you're right, it is their choice to go or not go. If you've never been in a situation like myself and my friends are in, you probably wouldn't even realize what could possibly happen.

Gee...spread a bad virus around WDW...What a brilliant idea! Who cares about everyone else! It's all about ME!

I agree! This is why my kids have been sick on and off for months!! When your kids are sick keep them home...PLEASE!! And if I were sick I would want to be home in my own bed and not on vacation :confused3

OP- I am glad it worked out for you. I hope you have a great trip and everyone feels better.

I am a RN and work with children who have cancer and recieve chemo and bone marrow transplants so I do know what could happen. I see it everyday. Tylenol does not "drug" up a child and will not make a child stop vomitting. Children puke all the time for reasons other than a virus. If you are immunocompromised in any way, you are taking a chance everytime that you walk out of your house and the same germs and bugs will be on the door at the grocery and at Disney.

Wasn't talking about you when I said if you haven't been in a position like mine and my friends. I was talking about the general public who may/may not realize that there is a danger to other people when they choose to go somewhere when they're really sick.

Chemo and bone marrow transplants are completely different than the situation my friends and I are in. So, even though you understand how it would affect them, it's a whole different ballgame when it comes to us just as asthmatics would be affected in a completely different way.

I realize I take a chance every day when I walk out the door, but I also have to trust that other people would not knowingly put myself or others in harms way.

Thank you all so much for your input. :) I called Disney Travel and they totally worked with me. :thumbsup2 I transferred it to a new booking for July 4th week. We couldn't get the same rates of course, but it was about the same. Heck it will be a little warmer (we have been there at this time before), but everyone will be healthy. FYI, it would have been $200 to just cancel and $50 to change. We are lucky that our jobs allow us to change our vacation days so easily. Thank you all so much for your help.

Yay!! Im so glad they were able to help you out!!!
