Thank you all so much for your input. :) I called Disney Travel and they totally worked with me. :thumbsup2 I transferred it to a new booking for July 4th week. We couldn't get the same rates of course, but it was about the same. Heck it will be a little warmer (we have been there at this time before), but everyone will be healthy. FYI, it would have been $200 to just cancel and $50 to change. We are lucky that our jobs allow us to change our vacation days so easily. Thank you all so much for your help.

I am THRILLED this worked out for you!!
I hope everyone is already feeling much better, so sorry to hear your family is SICK.
Meanwhile, I HAVE to say, that being that sick and "bringing it along knowingly" with you to a Vacation place, is not only wrong, but can be very bad for others that may have more medical complications as a result.
I guess here in NY with schools closing, people VERY ill and even dying from this swine flu, I am a bit more sensitive......
It is common sense really, when your child is ILL, please KEEP THEM HOME to recuperate and not "share" the germs, same thing you'd do for school (or atleast what your asked to do).
SO THANK YOU for thinking thru the situation and have a GREAT trip wen you go.................

I just wanted to chime in... We were in Disney last week and I am not a germaphobe but since I knew we were going on vacation and the flu going around I made sure to take wipes and hand sanatizer that I drove my DH nuts with all through the trip. Well our first day there we get on a bus with a family that has 3 kids that were VERY sick. Coughing not covering there mouth and looked down right miserable. But the parents wanted to go to the park so they drug them along. The one little girl was sweating and trying to go to sleep because she felt so bad. Well fast forward and by the end of the trip my dd and I had strep throat. We are still battling it since it was a bad strain of strep. So please try not to go when your child is sick and if they get sick there please keep them in the room till they are feeling better. :goodvibes We still had a wonderful time though and plan on going back next year.

To the OP I hope you have a wonderful trip!!

If you are sick, it is simply irresponsible and selfish to go to public places unless you absolutely have to ---- period.

As a mother, I can't believe that some parents bring sick kids to events like Gymboree, etc., which are clearly not a necessity. Their selfishness will probably lead to several other children having a miserable week or few days -- if not something worse.

I was reading an article about the swine flu the other day and somebody put it this way -- if you are in the U.S. and you pass on your virus to someone else, more likely than not (but not necessarily) everything will be okay with that second person b/c of our access to top notch healthcare. But if that person goes on to spread it to someone else and so on and so on, it eventually works its way to third-world countries where thousands and thousands of people could die.

Oh jeez...so now going to WDW with a presumable cold makes me responsible for killing thousands in third world countries?

So if you're immuno-suppressed in some way, please do not go to Disney World. It'll stress me out knowing I could be infecting someone with a virus I don't know I have yet.

Yeah yeah, I know that was snarky. And it absolutely wasn't aimed at anyone specific. This thread is just getting ridiculous! For those dealing with health problems, I'm honestly sorry. I'm a mom. I also have had issues. I can relate. I just can't belittle someone for trying to make the best out of a difficult situation. Besides, what about all the people that go on their trip and end up sick while there? Should Disney have some sort of quarantine? :rolleyes1

Disney is probably swarming with all kinds of germs! That's why we have to be responsible of ourselves and our loved ones to wash our hands properly, often.

I am a mother of a child who had a lowered immune system during her chemo treatments. I also work in a public grocery store and was very worried that I would bring something home to my baby from the gross people who sneeze and cough on me and hand me their dirty money after wiping their nose with their hand.

It's gross and disrespectful to people around you, but life doesn't stand still for the sniffles. If you are sick, wash your hands and use a tissue. If you are healthy, wash your hands.

People get sick and there are germs everywhere. It's just the way things are.

Apparently to some people it does. I guess none of us should ever leave our homes at all, just to be on the safe side!

100% agree!

I have been watching this thread and am really surprised, although I am not even sure by what anymore.
I want to say I am so happy for the OP that they were able to rearrange their trip without too much financial burden and I hope they have a great time.
You get sick from germs, whether viral, bacterial, fungal etc... You are exposed to them everywhere. You can get sick from your plane ride, the airport, the rental car, the food you eat while travelling all just as much as Disney. You also might get sick not from the irresponsibility of another person who goes out while they are sick, but because you are exposed to a new germ that your body is not familiar with and now wants to build up antibodies to it--which means you have symptoms or are sick. The mere fact that you travel to a different area makes you more likely to get sick because there are germs you are not regionally familiar with. You are probably more likely to get sick from CM who has a bug and served your food than a family that has a child toward the end of their illness. Drinking city water from a different city than yours can cause stomach distress. It does not mean that there is something like bacteria in the water, it is just foriegn to you. Lots of people have mentioned the sniffles. In adults RSV results in the sniffles, no fever and I promise you most if not all with these symptoms would go to work, vacation, etc....they would not even know their light to moderate symptoms were caused by RSV. As we have seen in some PP RSV can make an infant/toddler very very sick. Most of the shedding of a virus or bacterial is done early, often before the individual knows they are sick. You are most contagious at this time. So you are taking a risk by choosing to go, not by the irresponsibility of all the other people around you who might expose you to something. Now I do still agree that if you knowingly have something that is very contagious and you are in the throws of being very sick it is courteous and appropriate to stay home or limit your exposure to others. To the person whose child had a febrile seizure, I am sorry, I know those are scary especially when you are the parent. Most of the time this is something that will reoccur. We just cannot keep children from getting sick. That is how we build immunities. Whether it happens because of a virus or a bacteria (and the sniffles is cause by a virus) if she develops a fever she may seize. Thankfully most of these are benign, but they do not feel that way. I am sorry you are having to face this.
So all my rambling to say, everyone has a very valid point here but I think many are either being extreme, overreacting or sometimes just being rude to other posters. Germs are out there. Let's do what we can to protect others by handleing our own illnesses responsibly, and let's also do what we can to prevent ourselves from getting sick and not blame others for a natural occurance. I am so greatful we have been designed with the ability to fight germs even if it means we are sick while we do it.

ummm not just the sniffles its a high temp for five days and an awful cough. It is a big deal when there are kids or babies that can't handle a fever. This is a virus not a case of the sniffles. Big difference esp when you go through somthing scarry with your child. Im not being dramatic I am being a careful mom. Esp since I have an appointment on Tues at the Childrens Hospital with my 21 month old. She caught a virus and had a seizure so no not being dramatic

It's just a febrile seizure and your doctor will put your fears to rest. She will likely have more, and grow out of them. She will not be in danger, you will not need to bring her to the ER. When she gets a fever, make sure you treat it with motrin and tylenol, alternating them.

Wow that was snarky I can't believe people act like that. Unbelievable

LOL Have you even read your own posts? Let me give you a few examples.

You are very rude. You have no idea what can happen when some people get sick. Do you have kids? Well I do and my 21 month old just had her 1st seizure. She got sick and had a fever and had a siezure do to it. So it is a big deal when people go to places sick like that. So to have an attitude like that its awful

and

I just can't respond to you any more. you are 25 but you aren't acting like it. Maybe one day when you are a mom you will understand

And just for the record, I am sorry your daughter had a seizure. Being completely sincere, I'm sure that was definitely scary. I'm hopeful you get the news the PP suggested - that it was a febrile seizure.

I'm done arguing about this. I think it's safe to say that people shouldn't bring sickness to WDW. Some do. And as another PP said, it's our responsibility to do all we can to keep ourselves healthy while there but using hand sanitizer, washing hands and using other good health practices.

OP, sorry your thread got dragged through the mud. I know we're all happy it worked out okay for you. Nobody wants to even conceive missing their vacation! I hope you're family is feeling better and remains healthy through your trip.

To those on this thread with their own health concerns, best wishes to you.

we are NOT talking about spreading a illness you do not know you have we are talking about going to wdw when YOU KNOW you are sick and could get others sick.

Thanks for making the point of the original argument. Would you take your child (or yourself) to a birthday party or a family event knowing they were sick but really wanted to attend? There is a big difference between knowingly exposing people to a known illness- no matter how severe or mild it may be- and unknowingly exposing someone to an illness you don't have symptoms to yet.

I think that's the point most people (myself included) were trying to make.. Key word: knowingly..

Contagious diseases are just that - "contagious".. If you know that you have a contagious disease (again - know) the responsible thing to do is to avoid exposing as many other people as possible..

This is a virus not a case of the sniffles.

A cold is a virus. So both are viruses. To think that everyone at a particular park will be virus free is redicuolous as everyone will be capable of passing on something at any given time.

Hope that helps.

Does this fall under the category of one of my mother's favorite sayings: "If all of your friends are jumping off of a bridge, does that mean you should jump too??" ;)

Exactly! You may as well live in a bubble if you are going to be that paranoid about germs. I guess this whole swine flu thing has really freaked a lot of people out. Personally, I barely gave it a notice. Why give in to all that negativity? I haven't been sick with anything since Oct. 2007, when I got a cold at you guessed it...WDW. Oh, and to the person who got me sick...no worries! I don't think you are evil or selfish or irresponsible or whatever other silly names people would call you. It happens, and I was still able to enjoy my trip.

EDIT: Before I get attacked again, when I say I didn't give the swine flu issue a notice, I meant the hype, not the fact people have died. My heart goes out to those people and their surviving loved ones.

To the OP...
I hope your family gets well soon. I am so glad you were able to move your dates without too much hassle. My family went to WDW a couple weeks after recovering from a stomach virus and even then we still had to take it easy during the trip. Here is some pixie dust for your ADRs . Have fun in July.

ok let me say what so many others have said its one thing to not know you have a virus when you go really it is but when you KNOW you are sick and still go its selfish. Also I am not paranoid about the swine flu at all. Yes I am carful with hand washing but not paranoid

I think you miss the point spectacularly.

Its not about following others. The point was that it is a catagoric fact that you will always be able to pass something onto somebody. Therefore it is ludicrous to suggest that you should ever avoid going somewhere because of it because that is the same as saying you should never go.

The feelings of being hot, cold, sneezing the sniffles or whatever else you have are symptoms of an illness. Not displaying these does not mean you are carrying no pathogens.
