Hi everyone

One of my children's closest friends is a member of the Key Club at their high school and it's part of the key club's responsibility to come up with the theme for the semi-formal. We were sitting here brainstorming the other day (each member must come up with 3 ideas and they'll vote from that list) about possible themes they could choose. Once the theme is chosen, they will then need to come up with colors that will go with the theme.

Does anyone have any creative ideas?

Here are the two we came up the other day.

1. Winter Wonderland - I think it's a cute idea. You could use lots of cotton to represent snow ect... I like the theme because it seems like something you could get really creative with as far as decorations are concerned. If the dance was in the spring, I'd probably like the idea a bit more though. With the dance being in January, I just can't see winter as a theme (in Pennsylvania anyway) being too big of a hit.

2. Hollywood theme - Everyone dresses in celebrity type outfits (it's pretty formal anyway, so this would fit the dress), they roll out the red carpet, have the DJ announce each couple as if they're famous stars, etc... The kids would flip for this because they're all really wrapped up in celebrities these days. Can anyone suggest other ideas that could be used that would go along with this type theme? Decorations, that type thing? We had talked about getting trophies to give to certain people. Best dressed, best dance and they could call them a Grammy, etcc...something along those lines anyway.

What do you all think? The Hawaii/Caribbean theme is out as no one wants to wear floral anything. The dance will be about as formal as a prom really.

Under the sea could be really cute.
Pirates.

The two semis that I helped out with for National Honor Society when I was in high school had a ski lodge theme and an "almost paradise theme". Both were very low budget, and as I describe them you'll probably see that...
The ski lodge one was similar to your winter wonderland theme. We had an area right in the entrance though where we set up a couple of couches and hung a paper "fire place" and stacked skis and snowboards and boots next to it. We made a "skating rink" in one area of the gym. It was decoration only. Blueish plastic around the floor then surrounded it by painted cardboard boxes. Lots of icicle lights around the gym, and snowflake confetti on the tables. I feel like we had a ski slope type mural that we painted and I know there were lots of fake Christmas trees and such scattered around the gym. Our semi was also in January and to be honest, it was a great theme. Course it was 40 below that night with the windchill so it seemed fitting :rotfl:

For almost paradise no one had to dress tropical. Our semis were a step or two below prom, and the theme worked very well. We brought in inflateable palm trees (I live in NH; real ones are impossible to come by ;) ), hung those decorative lights (flamingos and palm trees) that are essentially Christmas lights with plastic covers on them. Lots of tissue paper tropical flowers all over the walls, balloon strings, etc. Outside the gym (which is where the dance itself is located) we hung blue tarps on the walls and hung blue crepe paper from the ceiling in strips. I'm not sure what that had to do with anything (go underwater to get to paradise?). In the entrance to the school we spread a couple of tarps and poured sand all over them (we robbed the town sand pit :rolleyes1 ), and stuck sand pails and shovels in the sand, along with beach chairs and boogie boards. In the gym itself we also had a couple of murals that we had painted. One was a sunset, another was a volcano (I think that's where the "almost" paradise thing came in...). We did hand out those lei things that seem to be made from garbage bags as everyone walked in. It was how the cops on duty knew that we had been checked in already and therefore were not allowed to re-enter the building. But other than that we were dressed in normal semi formal wear. Ironically enough that semi was during a major snowstorm...Made for interesting pictures. I think one of the proms was also a tropical theme

One of the prom themes was hollywood. Everyone just wore normal prom wear and it really had nothing to do with Hollywood, other than the decorations (couldn't tell you what they were, I skipped my proms  ). Some other ideas we tossed around when planning were Paris (make murals of the Eiffle Tower, lots of lights, etc), NYC, jungle, and a cowboy/Western theme (ok that was thrown out really quickly...). We also considered a "classic Hollywood" theme, which I guess would have involved a lot of black and white pictures of old actors/actresses, etc. But we had to throw that out because the prom that year was that theme

We had a French Theme for our Junior Prom - lot's of murals of cafe's and a big mural they worked on with the Drama Teacher and the crew that always worked as stage hands for the high school plays - they made a huge frame in the rough shape of the Eiffel Tower - covered it with canvas and painted in the details - punched holes through the paper and stuck small white christmas lights through the holes - it looked fantastic.

I wish I coudl remember what else there was but this was over 20 years ago :)

Wow monarchsfan you really have some creative ideas. I do like the Almost Paradise theme. Actually, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the classic Hollywood idea, but I'm not so sure the kids would. It's a great suggestion though. All black and white photos would be great too, but again, I'm not sure the kids would jump at the idea.

I thought the 70's Disco theme would be great too. I don't think the kids want to start wearing white suits though. :teeth: The girls would LOVE the dressing options (dresses that flare out as you spin showing lots of leg), but I don't think the guys would buy it too quickly.

I'm going to show this thread to all the kids tomorrow afternoon. Great ideas so far!!!

It was 20 years for me in '05 (ouch), so I understand!! I like this idea though.
