My six-year old boxer, Tanner, had a seizure the week before Thanksgiving. I called the emergency vet and was told if he had another I should bring him in. Well, he didn't have another one (atleast that I know of) until Monday night. Then he had another one on Tuesday morning. I took him to the vet on Tuesday and was told that he may either have epilepsy or a brain lesions or tumor. He is now on a low-dose of phenobarbitol to hopefully control the seizures.

Here's a picture of Tanner in his Halloween costume.

Please pray for my baby! He is such a sweetie and is otherwise perfectly healthy.

Also, I would appreciate encouragement and advice from anyone else who has dogs who suffer from seizures. I feel totally helpless when he's having one.

We had an epiliptic poodle when I was a kid, he lived to be 17 years old with no problems other than an occastional seisure.

Another Boxer mama here....no advice, just plenty of hugs & prayers!

We have a yellow lab, he's about 6-7 years old. He's had seizures for about the past 5 years. He has about one a month. They had diagnosed him as having epilipsy also (a few years ago). He is not on any medication. The vet said if he gets to a point where he is having more than one a month, then we should think about putting him on medication, but I think there are some side-effects that go along with the medication. His seizures only last about 5 minutes each time. It's a very scarry thing when you see it for the first time, but since he's been having them for years, it's not as scarry....not pleasant though. There really isn't much we can do when he's having one..we just try to be right there with him when he does have one, and comfort him as much as possible. Of course, when we are gone during the day, we don't know if he's having them or not, so hopefully he's not having more of them than we know about. I used to worry and fret and stew about it...but now I just try to realize this is just the way it is, and worrying all the time doesn't change it. The vet said dogs who have seizures, can still live long healthy lives. He said chances are that someday when it's his time to go, it will probably be old age that takes him...not seizures.

I also meant to say, that our vet said many times, when dogs have seizures, it's due to inbreeding. I mean, it could be a tumor or something like that, but it's not necessarily that.

Thank you all so much for the words of encouragement and the prayers. They really make me feel so much better.

We have a 12 year old cocker who has occasional seizures. Although he may have had some that we did not witness, we have seen about 5 in his lifetime. The vet told us, when he was about 4, that he would put the pup on meds if they became a regular thing. After all these years it hasn't been necessary.

It is frightening to watch him seize but we just sit beside him, pat him, and speak softly until they pass.

Ther is no reason to think that your pup can't have a long, happy life.

Prayers for Tanner! What a sweet boy. My sisters dog has been on daily phenobarbital for seizures for 8 years without major issue. Occasionally he has a small break through seizure. I hope the meds work!

 Your doggie is in my prayers. My brother's dog has epilepsy and he takes medication for it. He still gets them sometimes and it's scary but he seems to be doing ok.

Best wishes for your pup!

I wish you all the best. It is so hard when our puppies are sick. He is really cute.

Thank you to everyone for all of the encouraging words and prayers.

Tanner is just starting to show the drowsiness that the vet warned us about, but all in all he is doing well. He is getting loopy or acting like he's drunk. He's drinking alot of water - which the vet said would also happen. He seems to be doing okay. He is a big spoiled baby and is playing this up for all its worth.

What a beautiful dog! My 3 yr old yellow lab has epilepsy. He's been getting seizures for two years. He took potassium bromide for a year and did okay, then he started getting cluster seizures ( one right after the other), which can be very dangerous. He is now also on phenobarbital, which makes him walk like a drunken sailor when he first gets up from sleeping. He's basically the same goofball, just has a chronic illness which is definitely manageable. We also have a syringe of valium ifthe seizure goes over five minutes. When he has a seizure I just stay near him and make sure he knows i'm there and make sure he doesn't get hurt. Sometimes right after he is blind, but this usually resolves within 10-15 minutes and he is fine. He's usually hungry after, so I give him a little food (but he's a lab, so he's always hungry!). Hang in there!

Thanks KirbyDog. It's good to know that someone else is getting through this. It helps to know you're not alone.
