5th grade science fair. D needs ideas for a good experiment -something with a hypothesis, an eperiment, something we can pohotgrapph as we go along. Last year, we did something about the environments which made banas rot fasters -gross!

Any less disgusting, yet interesting ideas?

Can't think of anything off the top of my head, but I'll let you know if I do. :D

Most of my science fair projects had to do with compost....which is nasty..so sorry i can't help ya

Ok, I have seen physics in effects with roller coasters... a parent set up this wooden metal thing tower with rope supports and large round balls to go down the "track".

Which ball went faster? the bigger, or smaller... what could be done to make the balls go faster./ which track arrrangement
(This track sort of was flexible/so you could rearrange it)

Honestly it was cool, but it definetely looked like the parents did it...

I saw baking soda experiments...

the effects on germs on things.. kids took germ swabs of assorted door handles, toilet seats, etc, around school. Then they sent the germ samples out and got to see which one..

Personally my son loves the science fair!

DS did this for a science fair. He planted Sunflowers. He had 8 plants. 4 of one variety and 4 of another. (Picked Sunflowers because they grow fast)

2 (one of each variety) were watered.
2 (one of each variety) were given water + miracle grow
2 (one of each variety) were given 7-up only
2 (one of each variety) were given only Diet Coke

Very interesting results, not what he anticipated

He kept a journal, when the sprouted (actually planted 3 seeds in each of the 8 plants) - measured them and charted their progress.

I like ByTheSea's suggestion. :)

I did something related to roller coasters at one point, and something with Astronomy another time (though that was in High School).

the roller coaster one is cool. my older dd did an experiment about balance. she cut insect shapes out of construction paper. some had large wings, some small wings, some had bigger bodies, others bigger heads. she balanced them on a pencil. sometimes she added a paper clip on one side. the idea was to see how size and weight affected balance.

try doing a search for science projects or just free online science projects/curriculumn.

i have seen a book at the book store (imagine that!LOL sorry) called something like 101 science projects for home. it is meant for homeschoolers but you could get ideas from it. also try your library.
