Not sure if this is the best place to post this, so if there's a better forum, please move it, :)

This July, my parents are celebrating their 40th anniversary, and are treating the entire family to an Alaskan cruise.

I'm trying to think of something really cool that I could have set up for them when they board the ship (the cruise takes off on their actual anniversary day).

I know the cruise line has some items you can buy in advance to have set up in the room, and I'm definitely planning on doing some of that.... was thinking of combining several of their packages they have to offer, and doing a cake, flowers, casino tokens, gift certificate to the gift shop, balloons, etc.

Then thinking I'll make up a door sign before we take off that I can hopefully get put up before they board the ship (we'll be probably boarding at separate times). Will say "happy 40th anniversary mom & dad", and have some old pics of them, us growing up, then all their grandkids on it. (anyone know what an average cruise ship door size is?)

Also, thought about making up a t-shirt for each of them, with something about celebrating their 40th on it, but haven't come up with any design on that one yet.

Then, we're sailing on a ship called the "Pearl", and was thinking it would be kind of a neat remembrance to give them both something that had to do with pearls. My mom will be very easy, cause she loves jewelry, so might get her a pair of pearl earrings, or bracelet...

But not sure what to do about my dad... jewelry's definitely out for him, doesn't wear watches, when I googled pearls, I came across a "pearl-izumi" company that sells cycling clothing, but not real thrilled with that (might use it as a last resort). He's a definite outdoorsman, loves hiking, biking, photography... anyone know of any companies that would sell anything pearl-related?

Any other ideas I could do?

Thanks, :)

Why not play photographer for the whole trip documenting every day- take notes of little dumb things said, collect little momento's like brochures/ticket stubs and make a big scrapbook/photo album for them when you get home- I did this for my mom when she took my sister & I & all the kids to Disney one year, it was a massive undertaking but soooo worth it, she didn't even realize what I was doing, because everyone takes pictures, but she loved it- at the end of the album I had each of the kids (& me & my sis) write her thank you notes, telling her what we loved about the trip, special things we did or how being together felt for us... It was the best gift ever, we all still look thru that book and remember the things that went on (good and bad!). Have a great trip.

How about a pearl tie tac? He will probably be getting dressed up on the cruise and he could wear it.

I would check with cruisecritic.com Those people know the heart and soul of cruising inside and out and could tell you how to get things set up.

They would also have a particular forum set up just for the cruiseline that you will be sailing with.

No offense to anyone here, but it's like going to that cruise board to ask questions about Disney World. :)
