My DD has been dry heaving all morning (mainly cause she hasn't really eaten since about 4PM yesterday)

Is there ANYTHING you can give to a child to help with vomiting? Anything to help stop it? Or does it just have to run it's course?

Is this the same one with mono symptoms last week??

Yes, same one. She says her Stomach hurts, I am thinking that it is that stomach virus that is going around. If it is, should only last 24 hours, that is all it lasted for DD#2.

But she isn't drinking and I don't want her to get dehydrated yet again.

Last year when one of my sons had a stomach bug and just could not stop vomiting they gave him a script. This stopped it. It's the only time any of my kids have ever been given something like this.

They sell something over the counter called Emetrol. It's liquid and for nausea. That being said, I would call the doctor. They can call in a prescription for phenergan or taigan, and they are much more likely to help stop the vomiting. Phenergan comes in suppositories if she can't keep the medicine down. Plus, I would watch VERY closely to be sure she doesn't get dehydrated since she can't keep liquid down either. Poor thing--I hope she feels better soon!

Have you called the doctor? He/she will be able to give you something if it's really bad.

In the meantime, try to get something into her - saltines, flat ginger ale - so there's something to expel. My doctor always said it's hard on your stomach when there's nothing there.

If you aren't snowed in yet, there are 2 OTC things DH uses. (He thinks vomiting is the worst thing that can happen to a person. I never use the stuff myself.) One thing is coke syrup & the other I can't remember right now, but your pharmacist would know. I tossed our bottle as it was expired & I can't remember the name.

One last thing that worked for me one time. I had the dry heaves & couldn't keep down crackers for even a couple seconds. The doctor was concerned (I'm diabetic) but said to try a bit of orange juice before heading to the ER. The thought made me ill, but it actually worked. (Something about the acid in it he said.)

Hope she feels better soon!

ETA: Yes! Emetrol is the name I was trying to remember! Seriously, though, you should call the doctor.

First check for signs of dehydration.

Symptoms
Dry or sticky mouth
Low or no urine output; concentrated urine appears dark yellow
Not producing tears
Sunken eyes
Markedly sunken fontanelles (the soft spot on the top of the head) in an infant
Lethargic or comatose (with severe dehydration)
In addition to the symptoms of actual dehydration, you may also have vomiting, diarrhea, or the feeling that you "can't keep anything down", all of which could be causing

Things that are good to eat / drink are flat sodas (sprite etc) rice water (boil the rice and she can drink the water) , plain rice, plain crackers.

Start with sips of liquid, not too much.

If she's dehydrated and still can't keep anything down go the the ER, she'll need an IV. If she's not dehydrated and not keeping things down you might could call your DR for a Suppository anti-nausea medication.

Kids dehydrate quickly, especially if they aren't keeping anything down it is cause for concern.

I don't have any advice, but I hope she feels better soon.

Start with very small sips of water. Even sucking an ice cube or cold facecloth is fine. Go with a few sips every 30 minutes. If she can keep it down, then graduate to pedialyte. My DD likes the frozen pedialyte pops the best. If she can't keep the sips down, then you should probably give her primary care a call. Dehydration can happen very quickly in children, especially if she was sick earlier in the week. Mothers intuition is pretty invaluable at this point. You'll know if she doesn't look or act right to you. That's the sign to get her in for some fluids.

My mom used to always give me crushed ice. Try that for now.

FOr a child, I wouldn't give water or flat ginger ale. Give her some pedialite, they even come in popcicles now. They have stuff in it especially for children, that will keep her hydrated. Hope she feels better! :flower1:

Following my surgery, i was throwing everything up and dry heaving and I was severely dehydrated. At my post op appointment my surgeon sent me to the ER where they pumped me full of fluids AND anti-nausea medication which worked wonders!
So i would recommend calling the doctor.

Jamie just got out of the hospital for dehydration, she has mono, but the dehydration is what put her there. I couldn't get to the ER today if I wanted to, so she has to drink, but she can't keep it down, so trying to figure out a way to stop the vomiting. My mom brought her jello water, she says that will help.

Call your doctor. She's been sick for a long time.

Have her suck on some crushed ice....just one ice chip at a time. It's such a small amount it will usually stay down and you just keep going one chip after another. Also, even if it doesn't stay down hopefully some of it will and that will be better than nothing.

Personally, I'd be really concerned, kids has strep throat, mono, was just hospitalized for dehydration.....I'd definitelly at least CALL the doctor for advice.

Hope she's better soon.

CALL the Doctor anyone that has had mono can be at risk of having an enlarged spleen. I would call without question.

She is keeping things down, and drinking now, and NOW is mad at me cause I won't let her go OUT and play in the snow

Dramamine. My doctor told me that Dramamine can be used to settle the stomach. I've used it before and I've given it to DD. It not only settles the stomach, it makes you sleepy and you sleep off whatever it is that's bothering you.

Flat Coca Cola works and you only need to sip about a quarter of a cup. It stopped the dry heaves for me when I had a stomach bug in Nov. Similar effect as the cola syrup the pharmacy sells and easier to get down. Doc said it stabilizes the ph of the stomach.
