My 15 yo nephew is attending summer school this summer at a resident academy. Not necessarily what he wants to do...but as my sister said - maybe he will learn some good study skills that include "remembering to turn in his homework".

Anyways, my nephew is able to recieve care packages of food, but only food and letters/cards. NOTHING else. Apparently getting mail at school is a BIG, HUGE deal, so I'm really trying to help with morale.

So - I'm trying to come up with a list of things that aren't "totally unhealthy", because, quite honestly I've got tons of the unhealthy ideas!:rotfl:

Last week - our family sent him a package of oreos (enough to share with others) a big pack of licorice (again enough to share) some Ritz Crackerfuls, some granola bars and some blueberry muffins. Some fun snacks, and some that were a little more "savory". The food needs to be non-perishable, and I need to be able to mail it. Nothing that needs refrigeration.

So - any other ideas...would Slim Jims be an OK thing to send?

Again - just looking for some savory snack ideas. While I am not specifically looking for peanut-free things, as a general rule, I wouldn't send something like the little "peanut butter/cracker combos" things.

Thanks...I know you'll come up wth some great ideas!!!

How about a few bags of chex mix? I think that would go through the mail fine.

Chips
Ritz Flip Side Crackers
Box of Whoppers
Goldfish crackers
Little Debbie Snacks
Fruit Roll-Up's
Pretzels
Trail Mix
Dried fruit

Great ideas!!!

I'm especially loving the dried fruit one...my nephew is an avid soccer player, and really watches what he eats because of it, another reason why I'm trying to balance out the fun stuff with some healthy options.

I had thought about chex mix for my first care package...but definitely a great idea for the next box (there was no room left in the box)! I'm trying to not send too many repetitive items, so this will definitely be "on the list" for box two!

I was going to say this, but I didn't know if it would be okay in the mail. You don't think they would melt in the heat or anything do you?

This is my own personal thought about melted things...especially chocolate...who cares...chocolate is chocolate is chocolate :) Makes it a little harder to share...but it is all good!

Well in that case.... Just send him a bottle of Hershey's Chocolate Syrup! :rotfl::rotfl:

That would SO work for me!!!:lmao: (I think we need a Messy, but happy smiley face here!!!)

You can only send food? You can't send magazines or anything? May I ask why? That is a strange rule.

Sorry for going off topic, so...

I would recommend:
beef jerky
chips
water flavoring packets
pretzels
gum
gummy candies
dips (does he like ranch, ketchup, hot sauce, bbq sauce, etc. - I am a huge dipper and no camp I ever went to have the 'dips' I liked to eat, especially now that you can purchase almost all of these in 'trial' size so no need for refrigeration, etc.)

It is a military -type of school. It is an "intense" school, 5-weeks of mostly school/studying. They clearly, clearly, clearly are there to study. They don't want anything in the rooms to "distract" them from the job at hand. So-the rule is food and notes and cars only.

Edited to say...I meant to say CARDS...not Cars...and now I've been quoted on top of it...

Thank you for the clarification. It sounds like a wonderful program and I hope your nephew gets a lot of it, especially if it gets him to turn his homework. :)

Again, being the salt addict that I am, I would recommend beef jerky (or your aforementioned Slim Jims) and chips.

I think you have gotten some good recommendations. I had boyfriend in high school who attended a similar program which was held at a small colllege and it lasted 6 weeks every sumer. It was program that was designed help students who had problems with academics and most of the students took remidal classes of subjects they had trouble with. It wasn't an extremely strict program they had movie marathons in one of the auditoriums, board game, ping pong and foosball touraments on Friday and Saturday nights. Sunday was study prep day in which they were given weeks assignments or study lessons that day and could get a head start on them.
