We will be RV camping at the Fort for the first time next August and will be checking out Friday morning of Labor Day Weekend.

Going to take I-95 straight up to New Jersey, but are planning to spend the holiday weekend at a campground in either North or South Carolina on the way back.

Any good recommendations for a kid and pet-friendly campground, not too far off of I-95?? :thanks:

Kathy

We always like Point South SC. It's almost in GA so makes the next day a short trip to the fort.

There is a KOA at Richmond Hill, just south of Savannah, but, it has gotten good and bad reviews here.

If you want to go out a little further, there is Hunting Island near Beaufort, Tybee Island near Savannah, Skidaway Island near Savannah, and Ft McAllaster near Richmond Hill.

Beyond that, to the North, ...well there Be dragons!

It makes a longer day than you want to drive, but we LOVE Jeckyll Island in the Golden Isles just over the Florida border in Georgia. Many activities available for the weekend (if the weather cooperates).

If you're actually staying a few days, would you be willing to drive an hour or so off I-95? Myrtle Beach has some fantastic campgrounds.

If you do go that route, make sure you get reservations since it will be Labor Day.:thumbsup2

Over the years we've stayed at the following KOAs and they are fine for a one night stay. We don't use any of the facilities to speak of. I like Enfield a lot along with Florence. Florence does get soggy if there has been a lot of rain recently, but it has a lot of restaurants (mostly fast food) really close.

NC - Enfield and Smithfield
SC - Florence (Savannah), Point South, Myrtle Beach
FL - Jacksonville, St. Augustine

Generally when we go (from just outside D.C.) we stop at Enfield, then Florence and then Jax/St. Augustine. We like to get in early in the day to just kick back and like to stay only a couple three hours from FW the nite before we check in. I generally like to limit the daily driving to around 300 miles and no more than 450 since we tend to make a lot of pit stops for the DW and two doggies and since I have a diesel Van and stop at Flying J's it can take up to 20 to 30 min to refuel if one of them 200 gal MHs are in front of me.

Thanks again for all the advice everyone!

Lawnspecialties: We are actually planning to spend some time at Myrtle Beach KOA on the way down! It looks great.

Hmmm. Most of the campsites along I-95 seem okay for a stopover... we may split it up instead of trying to spend the holiday weekend in just one spot. The traffic will probably be pretty heavy.

We will be driving a Class C, I think, so we won't have the benefit of a vehicle to get around once we're hooked up.

I was thinking perhaps:

Fort Wilderness to to Point South KOA, SC (347 mi), then
Point South, SC to Fredericksburg KOA, VA (473 mi), then
Fredericksburg, VA to home (NJ) (299 mi)

This will be our first RV experience, so I don't want to bite off more than we can chew each day.

Just remember there is almost never a good time for going between Fredricksburg thru D.C. and around the beltway to I-95N. Even weekends can get rough because everyone is out or trying to either get out or back into "DODGE" including the truckers. I'm not sure about the Baltimore area roads. I'm sure you heard that the D.C. traffic is only behind L.A. as being the worst in the country.

Just give yourself extra time and don't expect to fly thru this corridor.

I would recommend you tune into 630 AM or 103.5 FM and start listening to traffic reports as soon as you can that last day and the local Fredricksburg or D.C. TV station before you leave the KOA. It's a crap shoot, but about every week or so an 18-wheeler gets tangled up with another vehicle and they close I-95 north of Fredricksburg for several hours.

I just thought of another one.

Kings Dominion has their own campground. It's just north of Richmond on I-95. The campground is nothing "super" but it is Kings Dominion.:thumbsup2

By the way. Please don't kick me out of the "Dis" community for this. :lmao: Kings Dominion, Carowinds, and all those other parks like that have far better "exciting" rides than DW. Sure there's nothing comparable to DW but going to Kings Dominion is somewhat different than the World. Now if you want to wind down on your way home, forget everything I just said.:rolleyes1

What about Outdoor Resorts at Hilton Head, SC? 20-25 minutes off I-95. Once you get there you have restaurants and a grocery store within walking distance. The beach is a one mile bike ride away.

Back in Dec of 2005 we stayed a couple of days at the MB KOA while visiting one of DW friends and she took us to the "Broadway at the Beach" complex where she works as a hostess at the welcome center there part time which was quite interesting and has a lot of restaurants. You can see what is there at the following website:

We stayed at Point South KOA in Yemassee (sp), SC on the way down and we liked it. In fact we will probably try to stay there again this year. I think it was like 30 miles or so to the GA border.
