Need Prayers & Pixiedust Please!-Updated Post #15

Hi all, I wish I never had to start a thread like this, but right now, my family needs all of the prayers we can get.

My Dad's side of the family is from Ecuador. Some of the family lives here in the States, but most still live in Ecuador. My Grandmother (92) has lived in NYC for the last 20 years, but is getting to the point that she has to have live-in care, so she decided to move back to Ecuador to live with my Uncle & Aunt. Two of my Aunts went with her on the trip.

Last Saturday night, my 2 Aunts, my uncle & his wife and my grandmother were hit head on by a drunk driver. My grandmother passed away on the way to the hospital, my 2 aunts have several broken bones , and my uncle & his wife are in a coma. My 2 aunts that went on the trip with my grandmother are expected to recover, but my uncle & his wife are not doing well.

We managed to get my Dad a passport (his expired) & a plane ticket, but it looks like I am not going to be able to go down to Ecuador. So, I am feeling pretty helpless right now. Plus, I can't speak the language that well, so calling the hospital to get info is not easy.

Sending prayers your way. If there's one thing I can tell you and your family during this time, it's to not lose hope!! My mom was in a coma and we were constantly told she would not wake up..and they said that IF she did, she would be a vegetable. Well one year later(this past april 4th) she is now walking, talking, and her memory is improving more and more everyday, as far from a vegetable as one can be. So don't lose hope..make sure you tell your family to talk to them in the coma, it helps. All you can do is hope and pray!! Please keep us updated!! god bless.

Thank you to all that responded (to this and another thread I had posted on).

Parkers_girl-Thank you for the encouraging words. I have fowarded this thread to my Dad's email so he can read it too. He is so heartbroken over this situation.

The only news news we have is my Uncle was rushed into surgery this morning and last I heard, he was still in there after 7 hours. My cousin & my great-uncle are doctors in the hospital, so they are staying involved. His wife was sent home with a private nurse (no insurance). The doctors think that her coma is more phycological (sp?) than injury induced. My other 2 aunts are at my relatives home recovering. They probably won't be able to travel for several weeks.

Please keep the prayers & good thoughts coming. I'll update when I hear anything new. Thanks, Sbella

Oh, southernbella, I am so deeply, deeply sorry for the loss of your beloved grandmother and the injuries to your two aunts and your uncle & wife.

From the bottom of my heart, please accept my sympathies and prayers that your grandmother rests in peace with God, and that those injured get the care they need to be strong and healthy again.

Hi all, Thanks again for all responses.

I spoke with my Dad earlier. He said that my Uncle is out of surgery, but has developed pnumonia (sp?), so the doctors are not allowing any visitors. Not much we can do now but pray. Thanks for all of the good thoughts. My Dad also wanted to send his thanks (I emailed this thread to him). Thanks, Sbella

My Aunts are doing better. They are at a relatives house in Quito recovering. The doctors think it will be at least 2 weeks before they can travel.

My Uncle's wife hasn't changed much. She has been sent home (no insurance) but she is still in a "coma-like state".

We did find out that if you have a large debt (like the hospital bills), you are not allowed to leave the country before they are paid. Thankfully, we have a several family members that are coming together to deal with the bills.

My Uncle is an artist & runs a school in Quito, so my Dad may have to stay longer so he can deal with the school & his students. Dad's an artist too, so he's the best choice to run the school for now. Long term, I'm not sure what's going to happen.

I swear, every time the phone rings, I cring. My 5 year old DD has been an angel throughout all of this. She overheard the phone call & has been so concerned for her Grandfather. She sent him her favorite dollie to take on the plane with him so he won't get lonely.
