Do I call the ped. or the allergist? Our ped. prescribed our first epipen jr b/c we told him what happened when DD ate peanuts and he did not want DD to be w/o one. When he gave us that rx it had 3 refills on it. Since then we have a new ped (we moved) and our allergist, neither who have had to prescribe the epi b/c our original ped did.

If I call the allergist is he going to want to see DD again for another skin test, her last one was almost 2 years ago. I just don't want to put her through that again right now. I know she is allergic to peanuts and she probably did not outgrow it and I keep her away from all nuts anyway.

So, who do I call and will they just write out the rx us?

Sounds like you already know that your allergist won't just write the prescription, so I'd try the ped. Especially if he/she has your old charts, maybe they'd do it?

my allergist in virginia presrcibed my epi pen the first time 2 years ago but i was able to get a Rx if needed from my internist, allergist and dermatologist.

Since we moved to california, i havent needed a refill yet but from talking to my docs. i can get a Rx from my allergist, pulmonologist, internist and dermatologist if needed ( no repeat testing needed unless i want it)

If she has a known peanut allergy, you should be able to get an Rx from either doctor.

Thank you! That was what I was hoping, her allergy is known. I called ped today but they were closed (I guess new years eve). So I will try again tomorrow, although they will probably be closed.

If you're worried about waiting until Monday, call your pediatrician! That's why they have "on-call" coverage (even on weekends). If your pediatrician doesn't have someone "on-call" for emergencies, then you should probably reconsider your choice of pediatrician...

My DS was first diagnosed with food allergies at 8 months, after anaphylaxis when he had a couple teaspoons of milk. He was allergic to milk, eggs, sesame, and peanut.

My first bit of advice: DO NOT go anywhere without TWO epipens! They should come in a twin pack. And, watch expiration dates! We keep two in my purse, two at school, and two at aftercare (he doesn't go, but maybe once or twice a year). Any pediatrician will write the prescription.

Also, carry liquid benedryl with you as well. We like the new little individual spoon ones.

I'd get a blood test every year as well, it's called a rast. It can give you a general idea of how much IgE is in his blood for the particular allergen. We discovered at 5 that my son outgrew peanut and sesame, and then did a food challenge at the allergist's office (takes all day for each). We have been getting this done since he was one or almost two.

Good luck!

As long as the liquid is clear, the epi pens are still good, regardless of expiration date. If the liquid is cloudy, you'll need to get a new set ASAP. Call either your ped or allergist on Monday and ask whether they'll write the prescription without seeing your DD. They may offer to fill it right away on the condition you schedule an appointment in the near future. Some doctors can be sticklers and refuse to refill prescriptions they didn't originally prescribe without seeing the patient, so be prepared. It would be a good idea for your DD to see the allergist if she hasn't been tested in 2 yrs. She may have outgrown the allergy or have new ones you haven't discovered yet. My kids get the blood test every 2 yrs. It's been much more helpful in measuring the changes in their allergy levels than the scratch tests, and less uncomfortable.
