Need new dishwasher. Any suggestions?

My 15yr old dishwasher just broke. I am looking to replace it with a quieter, stainless model. My old one was LOUD and got very dirty on the inside. I always needed to buy special cleaner and scrub the inside, which was a pain. I don't need special cycles but would like a model that cleans dishes well and that I don't need to clean the inside of every week. Moderately priced also, nothing fancy, as I only have a modest kitchen. I am asking all the informative people on The DIS if they are pleased with their dishwasher purchase. Any suggestions?

I just heard on the radio that Whirlpool is laying off a lot of workers and closing factories. That would include Maytag and Kitchenaid. I myself have a BOSCH. I've posted many times that it's only had one service call and that's bc I broke a dish and a chip was stuck in the drain. It's a great DW, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another. I actually bought a floor model, and it was a steal.

Subscribing b/c I am in the market, too! We are remodeling and replacing all our appliances. Personally, i have ruled out Bosch for a dishwasher b/c they dont' have a seperate heating element and the filter is not self cleaning. Plus my MIL's seems REALLY tiny on the inside.

As far as a separate heating element & filter go, it hasn't been an issue for me. I know that the water is hot immediately, and the dishes air dry. No steam shooting out of the machine. Never ever cleaned a filter, so I don't know about that. My Bosch has been issue free for over 15years. BTW, when I had that serviceman come out to pull out the broken dish chip he was here 10 minutes. Now I khow to do it myself. (I was actually hoping the machine needed to be replaced as I wanted to upgrade all my appliances -but no such luck)

I have a Bosch. It's 7 years old now and I still love it. It is the quietest dishwasher I have ever owned. In addition to being really, really quiet, it does a great job cleaning.

We have had good luck with Whirlpool. Our present unit is a middle of the road model we got at Lowes or Home Depot. The noise level on ours is average, but......... the higher the model, the more insulation they tend to have.

This one is 5 years old and we have no complaints.

Have gone through a Magic Chef, Kenmore and a Maytag, now on Kitchen Aid and very pleased. The KA is one of the basic ones, normal and heavy duty cycles, high temp scrub and heat and air dry. It is still ten times quieter than my "better" Maytag that blew out the pump two months out of warranty and my builders original MC that started to fill even when the door was open!

Personally, I won't buy KitchenAid again. We bought a dishwasher when we moved into our new home and have had three serious issues with it thus far. As in no workie-workie.

The touchpad went. Dead DW, service call under warranty. (less than 1 yr old)

The "brain" (motherboard maybe?) went. Dead DW, service call under parts warranty.

Motor burnt out. Dead DW, service call under parts warranty.

It's been pretty frustrating as I expected at least a few trouble-free years with it, and we didn't even get 12 months before things started frying. We may just have had back luck with it, but nothing we've seen would encourage me to buy another.

We purchased a maytag about 6 months ago and I hate it. Started out great,I guess compared to what I had, but has rapidly gone down hill. Very noisy and the filter has had to be cleaned out already.

I'm so glad to hear this. We're actually buying all new appliance for our new house and I want a Bosch simply because I want the third tray for my silverware. I'm hoping it'll actually clean the silverware and the other dishes instead of being an expensive dish rinser/dryer like I've been using my other one for!

I have a Kenmore. Biggest POS I've ever had. I believe it's a rebranded Maytag.

Neighbor has a Bosch. It's quiet and it cleans. Two things my dishwasher can't seem to accomplish. She also researched everything extensively before purchasing. This is her second Bosch. There was nothing wrong with the first one, she just updated everything in her kitchen a little over a year ago.

(It's not the best Kenmore, it's the second one down from the best. So not exactly cheap, I believe the people we bought the house from paid around $750 for it. It came with our house and was less than two years old when we moved here--almost seven years ago.)

We recently remodeled our kitchen and got all Whirlpool appliances. We love our new dishwasher!!

I haven't had luck with any recent dishwasher puchase. We had a stainless steel interior Kenmore die after 4 1/2 years. We replaced it with a stainless interior Whirlpool that was a lemon that the store eventually took back.

We replaced the Whirlpool with a Bosch that failed after two years. Our model was recalled, but Bosch kept telling us our serial number wasn't included. We were clearly having the identical issue as those they took back, as there was plenty of info on the net about it. We paid for a repair, but the same part failed after another two years. Last week, Bosch finally agreed to fix the dishwasher, probably because it's a fire hazzard.


In my opinion, Bosch is awkward to load. It doesn't have a drying cycle, and you have to manually clean the filter every few days. It cleans well when it's working though, LOL, and is relatively quiet.

My only recommendation is not to buy a Frigidaire. We've had two and I hate them both. Clearly I didn't learn the first time.

I have a GE. It came with my home, the manufacture date was in late 2009 so it's fairly new. Really, it's been good. I live alone so I only run it once a week. The plates and bowls that were in there for a week get just as clean as the ones that are in there for a day. May only complaint is that it has a silverwear compartment that sits in the door and the silverwear doesnt always come out as shiny as I'd like it.

No, they don't come out dry, but when we bought it, they suggested we crack open the door after it shuts off to help them dry quicker. I usually don't do this as I don't like the steam. The regular wash cycle takes roughly 100-115 minutes, so I run it at night and don't take them out until the next morning. I still have to dry them with a towel, although they have drip dried to some extent by then. I don't think it would be any different with plastic items, but as I said, I don't usually crack open the door.

Before Bosch finally agreed to repair ours, I thought I was going to have to buy another dishwasher. After researching it, I decided my choices were to switch to Kitchenaid or buy another Bosch, despite the problems we'd had.

I'm in the market too, so I can't give you recommendations, but I can tell you that I *hate* our GE. Like a PP said, our builder put it in. We hate it, and so does every other homeowner in our subdivision (and we all have various models). Our model is allegedly top of the line and it's horrible. I've just given up on the thing entirely, after 3 years. Glasses come out filthy, it's disgusting. Seems like our entire subdivision is replacing them.
