Need New Dinnerware

Love my Fiestaware. They will break but not easily. Plus the colors are fun! I mix and match mine.

I agree I love my Fiestaware and it is fun to mix and match Kohls and Macy's both have good sales and coupons.

I have had Corelle for 23 years, we have never broken any, and they get dropped fairly often. My dad is using the same Corelle he used when I was a young kid (and I am 44). I saw one plate shatter of his when I was younger. I have seen one other shatter, that was when my stepdad set a plate down on a hot stove burner. They can shatter, but they really have to hit just right and it's pretty darn rare.
they are so lightweight and easy to clean, I love them.

.

My house must be in an alternate dimension then, because I am on my second set of Corelle and mine shatter when dropped. Perhaps it because I have tile floors as oppose to linoleum?:confused3 I have 2 boys, one is autistic, so we have had our share of oops moments.

Thats interesting. I had tile floors for 10 years and never broke one when they dropped.

We must live in the same dimension:rotfl2:We started off with 12 of each piece (plate, bowl, small plate, don't use the coffee cups) now we have less than 5 of each. As you can tell we have had plenty of oops moments. When one breaks I find slivers for days, even though I sweep, vacuum and mop the area.

Edited to add my parents have Corelle and theirs shatters also.

Big Lots sometimes has cheap melamine sets if you're that hard on dishes. I'm another who thinks you can't go wrong with plain white Corelle, but I've had the same inexpensive stoneware I bought at Rite-Aid 25plus years ago.

Love my Corelle dishes! They are light weight and well worth the price!! Mine are 5 years old, have been through 2 moves. My younger kids use them everyday as well so they have been dropped way too many times to count. We don't use paper plates so it is well used. The whole set looks exactly like it did the day I bought it!!

I'm with you, we broke an entire set of Corelle growing up on linoleum...

We have Pfaltzgraff which is stonewear, and we are still using the same dishes we received as wedding gifts almost 24 years ago. We have 4 kids and my mom lives with us, so these items have been used hard.

I can only remember one piece we have broken, and it was a bowl that cracked in the microwave (probably had a hairline crack from a drop or two we figured). We have had tile floors for almost 20 years.

Yes, the dishes are heavy, but I think that honestly leads to less droppping...you adjust appropriately when you pick it up because it has some heft. We my oldest two were toddlers, a friend convinced me to pick up Correlle as kid friendly dishes. I used the 4 piece set for year for the kids in which time we broke 4 plates! I started using the salad plates for the kids at that point (smaller than the dinner plates), and we had no issues.

I have the Heritage set which is white and non-trendy, but it is elegant and super easy to dress up. Plus, it goes with everything.

We have Everyday White from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. We have had them for 7 years and have only had 1 broken plate. Granted I don't think we really drop them but even our three year old son uses them and we aren't really careful with them.
One thing I like about them is that they sell them by the piece so that when the 1 plate broke and we went in and grabbed another one for like 6 bucks (that was five years after our initial purchase and the style was still the same).

Me too, so glad I went into Fiesta. Used so many times now, no scratches from knives, etc. I bought many colors. They have sales at Kohls, and on top of that you can get 30% off.

I did NOT want mugs or cups, so I did not buy place settings. I bought dinner plates, cake plates, salad plates (? not sure, size is in between dinner and cake), various sized bowls, a few platters. There use to be a place online that sold open pieces like that, but they went out of business.

I probably bought too many different colors, but might gift my daughter some when she move out, she can grab the colors she likes.

We also have the Pfaltzgraff Heritage set we got as a wedding gift 17 and a half years ago. They are our every day dishes. We still have an unopened box in the basement. :)

I've had my everyday Pfaltzgraff dishes for 23 years now, and we've broken cereal bowls (I suppose their shape makes them less sturdy), but nothing else -- and these dishes have been used and used and used. My kids grew up with these dishes as the go-to tableware, including the years when they were not gentle with anything. I love that Pfaltzgraff has so many items available; for example, the rim soup dishes get loads of use at my house.

I also have a set of Johnson Brothers china that sees moderate use. It isn't nearly as heavy as the Pfaltzgraff, but it has held up well over the years. I don't think a single piece has ever broken. It is noteworthy that we own only plates in this set -- no bowls -- and I think ALL plates are just naturally stronger than other tableware.

I've started a FiestaWare set in the last two years, and it too is very sturdy. I recently dropped a bowl as I was lowering it into the dishwasher. It hit the side of the dishwasher, then the floor -- but did not break. The downside to these dishes is that they are HEAVY and (being bulky) they take up twice as much space in the dishwasher -- if you don't allow two "slots" between the bowls, for example, water can't get in there to wash. And, of course, that could just be my particular dishwasher.

I'm always surprised that people love Correlle so much. It's certainly inexpensive, and the patterns are available for a long time, but they feel cheap and flimsy to me. They seem appropriate for a college apartment.

I do not recommend anything by Rachel Ray. I bought a set of individual casserole dishes from her line -- were they called Brown and Bubble? I bought them new from ebay, and one arrived broken. Another broke on the second use. Very disappointing.

I'm with you! I have LOTS of dishes, but I only buy pieces that'll actually be used -- and the very first thing I don't want is more mugs and cups.

I've got too much fiesta but I do like it. Bought it in sets so lots of mugs and a few cups and saucers, depending on whether I bought 4 or 5 piece place settings. Never use those mugs! But over all, still was less expensive to buy the sets then the open stock. We use the plates, bowls, side plates all the time. I did buy open stock luncheon plates because that's a separate purchase regardless and that's what we use for sandwiches and breakfast.

I also have corelle and I like to take them to work when I have food I want on a plate. If they don't come home, no biggie.

For me, Fiesta is far too heavy. I don't want the strain of it on my wrists (I've had surgery that didn't go completely as planned) and don't like heavy dishes for that reason. It sets a really nice looking table though.

I've had good luck with Corelle, but I think it looks cheap. Granted, it IS cheap, which is nice on the budget.

I like the plain ol' Ikea - the FARGRIK - because you can buy it plate by plate, so that when a plate breaks (and they will) you get another plate.

My mom has had the Pfaltzgraff Yorktowne stoneware dishes for 30 years. A rare few pieces broke accidentally, but they were easy to replace, as that style keeps going and going. The dishes are hefty, but mom doesn't have to skip every other spot in the dishwasher to get them clean. She has cups & saucers, mugs, dessert plates, lunch plates, dinner plates, bowls, various serving dishes and platters, covered butter dishes and salts & peppers. I see in addition they also sell a square set now. It's a great dish and pattern.

I have had problems with stoneware dish sets. They have all been white sets. I had to get rid of each of them after just a couple years because our knives and forks made terrible gray marks all over the plates. The plates looked nasty and it took lots of hard core scrubbing with Barkeeper"s Friend or magic erasures to get them to look half way decent. I bought the Pfaltzgraff Filigree pattern (a white stoneware) several years ago to replace my Homer Laughlin Vintage pattern white stoneware. I gave both sets away...hated them so much!

After much scrubbing and frustration I did a little research and found that china does not get the gray silverware marks like stoneware does. One Mother's Day JC Penney had their JP Penney Home brand china sets on sale for really cheap. I bought two sets of the white basket weave pattern. I have had them for about 10 years now and they still look like new. My kids have broken or chipped a few pieces but Replacements sells individual pieces for a couple of dollars each. I'd rather replace a piece or two a year than buy a whole new set.
