I could go on and on about my chipmunks fandom, BUT for a six-year-old who might be looking for something a step up from cartoon music, there are a couple of kids' records by current bands that have recently been released. The first is No! by They Might Be Giants, who have always been sort of an upbeat family-friendly band. I've got that one, and it is excellent. The songs are simple but really nice, and it would be perfect for his age. It's parent-friendly as well.

In addition, if you put the cd into your computer, there are great flash animations and games that go on while the music is playing. I'd say that's a must-have.
Also, you might look for this when it comes out in November. The song selections are great, and a lot of very cool bands are involved (really, darius singing "It's all right to cry"...what could be better? lol):
