Need LOTS Of Apps Please!!!

We will be driving from Missouri down to Disney in November with our four, almost five, year old son. It will be about a 17 hr drive one way. Yikes! I am looking for lots of new apps to load up our ipad and ipod with before we leave. Also thought we could use it while waiting in long lines at the parks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for helping make our trip a little easier! (Feel free to add any for mom and dad too that would help pass the time)

Coloring books, legos, portable dvd with movies, and lots of stops to stretch and burn off energy. I've found that my kids got sick of apps after an hour or so - well, they got sick of the device they were on, and wanted to look/do something else.

The queues at WDW aren't really set up for standing still and playing apps - most queues actually are pretty interesting, and keep moving at a slow, steady pace. Not sure how one would hold/balance and use an ipad while walking forward?

iTunes has its popular list - have you looked through that yet?

I know you asked about apps, for which I don't really have a suggestion, but what about borrowing books on CD (along with the book its self) from your local library? Also, my five y.o. *loves* to play w/ dry erase boards - could be entertaining for awhile. You might even be able to find the magnetic kind and then you could find/make some interesting magnets to play with or trace. Also, does your son like to take pictures with the devices? if so, maybe you could give him a list of things to take pictures of. I think the key to success - and probably boys especially - is to mix things up! I know this didn't answer your request, but hopefully it gives you some ideas.

Thanks for the input. We make 9 hr one way drives to see my family several times a year and the ipad keeps his attention better than any other thing. We use other things too like dvd players, small toys and coloring/work sheets. I just know that the ipad works really well for him so I am trying to find good new apps for him. He loves anything related to science and learning about other countries so if anyone knows of a few that would relate to that let me know but we are open to any of them. I have looked at the popular list in itunes but I was looking for some that had been used and that kids really liked.

We have also had really good luck using the ipod while waiting in long boring lines. I know Disney well and know that some lines will keep his attention but the ones that will not, we will use the ipod. He is very good at inching along while using it. We used it in line this summer at a few theme parks with much success. I load several cartoon shows on it and usually the wait was about half or a full episode. He had no problem with pausing it a little before we were to get on the ride so I had time to put it in our bag.

It's not science related, but my dd's love temple run, angry birds, the Disney jr app that plays the episodes, and a game called subway surfer. Hope this helps

My 5-year-old likes the Highlights hidden pictures and Toy Story theater. She was really into Endless ABC when we first got it, like obsessed. Reading Raven is a good one, Alphabuild. The Lego games seem fun. Color Me 2 is her favorite coloring app, and Drawing Carl. The Pigeon app (costs $ but my kids love it), Where's My Mickey, Robot Friend, Fruit Ninja.

I swear I don't let my kids play on my phone as much as it seems like I do with all these apps, lol.

Bill Nye has an app...we have it but I haven't tried it. My kids like the apps where you can make stuff, like make pizzas, build cakes, etc. Smurf grabber is popular, highlights app, coloring apps, fruit ninja, ice age village, jakes pirate school, Madagascar math ops, angry birds, puzzle apps......it's endless!

Netflix, PBS Kids, Cartoon Network, and all angry birds apps were the most used on my iPhone by my kids. The little one also liked the MeMe Tales book app. The shows and movies help pass the drive time! In line we never used them. Starfall is also educational.

Try a google search for good games for kids of that age. "Best apps for kindergarteners" for example.

One of my favorite apps is appsgonefree which lists daily free apps they preselect. Now and then something really good pops up for the kids. At the very least it is something new for them to check out - and free

Wow you’re “helpful”. If you’d care to notice, we do plan other activities for him but if you have ever worked with children before you would know that even some of the best laid plans fall flat on there face sometimes. You would also know that as with anything else, technology can be used to help stimulate young minds as long as it is done in moderation. Way to prejudge! I’m sure that you have already formed an opinion of everyone on this site by just reading one of their posts. Good job and way to stay classy. FTW? Really? More like you started your celebration/touchdown dance on the 10 and fell right before you reached the goal line. It all about balance and it looks like you have the right one for your family. While we do limit electronic everything at home.....during travel, it's pretty much whatever goes, DS is 6. Here a few he likes:
where's Mickey.....it's like where's the water
Where's my Perry Also from Disney Mobil
Any Lego app
Angry Bird Space
Hill Climb
Temple Run
Flow Free ( really an adult app but he loves it)
TDKR- It's batman
Power Rangers Legends

These are all on my iphone. There are some other ones on my pad that are different that he will also play traveling. We don't really use the phone in line, but I have been know to give him my phone a few times when we wanted to enjoy a longish signature or just nicer meal. LAZY LAZY me

My DD loves the Toca games. She also likes this mystery-type game - the Secret of Grisly Manor. She can also spend hours making cartoons with Toontastic. Thankfully, each section is limited to 1 minute (she could go on and on and on).

My DS is only 19 months, but all these apps here would be good for an older child as well.

These are free.

• Toddler Taxonomist
• Pirate School (Jake and the Neverland Pirates, might need to search for Disney first).
• Duplo Jams (from Lego) The barnyard game is the most fun.
• Endless Alphabet - choose the free version

My DS LOVES these books for the iPad but they do cost money:

• Another Monster at the End of This Book

Also, my DS likes Pro Keys - it's 99 cents but has piano keyboard and we have the Peterson's Guide to Birds (got it on a good sale) and he likes looking at the bird pics and hearing their sounds.

Get any and ALL of the Doctor Panda interactive games.

Same with the Bamba line of games. Get them all.

I am too pooped to get out the ipad, but I'll look for more tomorrow.

We have a lot of awesome ones, but the two brands listed above are amazing- EVERY kid tries to take my DD's ipad away to play the games. You'll see. They're great.
