Yesterday evening I'm sitting in the front room watching TV when something caught my eye outside. It was a large black dog running straight up the middle of our somewhat busy street. I went out to take a look and by that time he was several houses down checking out the yards. This was a never before seen dog so I was a bit concerned. Not only is our street fairly busy but we're right off a road that is very, very busy!
So I called to him but he wasn't having any of that and crossed the street again and went into the grove. Finally he decided to check me out and began to cross just as a truck was barreling down our street. I played traffic cop and got the truck to stop.
The dog came over to me and I held my breath. I'm not much of a dog person. I was bitten once as a child and have always been just a bit nervous around them. But it didn't take long to see that this wasn't a biting dog. The tongue was hanging out and the tail was thumping and he was sort of smiling the way dogs do.
In the mean time we've moved on to deep twilight so I asked him if he'd like to spend the night in my backyard and after a few minutes and some gentle tugs on his collar, he began to follow me.
Now can someone tell me why people would bother to put a collar on an animal and NO TAGS???
I started searching for his family by calling every police station in the area. No luck there but at least they have my contact information.
In the meantime, the dog decided he really hates it in the backyard so I evict 16 cats from the back porch and in he comes. My dominant male cat, Chester, wants to get out there and whoop his butt and the dog is actually afraid of him but the rest of the cats are just staring wide eyed at him. There is a disturbance in the force.
I spent numerous times out there talking to him and, well let's just say, for a dog, he's a heck of an animal.
Today is Sunday and down here animal control won't come out unless it's an emergency. I'm going to put up signs all around here. Tomorrow I'll call all the Vets in the area, any animal shelters I can find and put a found ad in the local paper. Can you think of anything else I should do?
Normally the time of day he appeared I am on the computer and I kept thinking life would have been so much easier if I had been. Sometimes I think we change our schedule because we're suppose to do that for that particular day and time. I would have hated to go out today and found this beautiful animal laying by the side of the road. I've seen that enough times since we've moved to Florida.
As soon as the light is better I'll take a photo of our visitor. He's been well cared for and that's for sure. Now if his owners had only invested a couple of bucks for a name tag.
Here's a photo of our guest.

I had a Golden also show up out of the blue, 18 years ago, the neighbors next door were scared of him, so IN our Backyard he came.......and stayed for 16 wonderful years.
I named him Maxwell Smart, Maxx for short, and he sure was a great dog, and got along with everyone, cats, and all.
The cats will just have to get used to him.
