Yesterday evening I'm sitting in the front room watching TV when something caught my eye outside. It was a large black dog running straight up the middle of our somewhat busy street. I went out to take a look and by that time he was several houses down checking out the yards. This was a never before seen dog so I was a bit concerned. Not only is our street fairly busy but we're right off a road that is very, very busy!

So I called to him but he wasn't having any of that and crossed the street again and went into the grove. Finally he decided to check me out and began to cross just as a truck was barreling down our street. I played traffic cop and got the truck to stop.

The dog came over to me and I held my breath. I'm not much of a dog person. I was bitten once as a child and have always been just a bit nervous around them. But it didn't take long to see that this wasn't a biting dog. The tongue was hanging out and the tail was thumping and he was sort of smiling the way dogs do. :teeth: In the mean time we've moved on to deep twilight so I asked him if he'd like to spend the night in my backyard and after a few minutes and some gentle tugs on his collar, he began to follow me.

Now can someone tell me why people would bother to put a collar on an animal and NO TAGS??? :furious: I started searching for his family by calling every police station in the area. No luck there but at least they have my contact information.

In the meantime, the dog decided he really hates it in the backyard so I evict 16 cats from the back porch and in he comes. My dominant male cat, Chester, wants to get out there and whoop his butt and the dog is actually afraid of him but the rest of the cats are just staring wide eyed at him. There is a disturbance in the force. :darth:

I spent numerous times out there talking to him and, well let's just say, for a dog, he's a heck of an animal.

Today is Sunday and down here animal control won't come out unless it's an emergency. I'm going to put up signs all around here. Tomorrow I'll call all the Vets in the area, any animal shelters I can find and put a found ad in the local paper. Can you think of anything else I should do?

Normally the time of day he appeared I am on the computer and I kept thinking life would have been so much easier if I had been. Sometimes I think we change our schedule because we're suppose to do that for that particular day and time. I would have hated to go out today and found this beautiful animal laying by the side of the road. I've seen that enough times since we've moved to Florida. :(

As soon as the light is better I'll take a photo of our visitor. He's been well cared for and that's for sure. Now if his owners had only invested a couple of bucks for a name tag. :sad2:

Here's a photo of our guest. :)

I had this happen to me also.

I happened to be looking out my window and there was a golden retriever roaming up my street. Now, my street isn't too busy, but the next one is basically a highway and he was headed straight for it. I called him over and he came. I am familiar with most of the pets on my street and had never seen a Golden. I kept him in my house for awhile and then got in the car and drove around the neighborhood to see if I could find anyone looking for a dog. This dog did not have tags either but did have a rabies tag (which they can eventually trace).

After a few hours of not seeing ANYONE looking for a dog, I made some quick signs and posted them. I got NO calls, nothing. So, I then called animal control (I could not keep the dog as I have two myself and we were beginning to have a big snowstorm so the dog couldn't stay outside). They quickly came and got him.

My signs stayed up for awhile. No one called me. Then the next day or two later, I contacted animal control and they told me the dog had been claimed by its owners. Turns out they lived in my neighborhood two streets over. What I can't believe is that they didn't see my signs and didn't even appear to be looking for this dog. Weird.

I have two dogs and neither of them where tags. We tried it for awhile but both of them were constantly scratching at their collars, the tags were clanking around all the time. Now that they are older they hate it if I try to put collars on them. I know I should.

My dogs have gotten out of the yard a few times and I alwasy frantically look for them. The person who found my dog actually found me looking for the dog and knew I was the owner. I just don't get why these people never even looked for their Golden Retriever.

I think there's a reason for everything, and you were meant to find him. I so have to say though, I have 2 dogs that wear collars and tags, but every once in awhile they do manage to get their collars off while I'm walking them, so even though they do have tags at that point, they would be tagless.

Wow, he's beautiful! What a lucky break for him that you were off your normal routine! :thumbsup2 I hope you get some answers soon and good for you for saving the poor thing :teeth:

He looks like a sweet doggie! Sounds like you're covering all the bases. Good for you for taking him in! :cheer2:

What a beautiful dog. Good for you for caring!
Hoping that you get some answers on Monday.

Lab, and I would keep him. :confused3 I had a Golden also show up out of the blue, 18 years ago, the neighbors next door were scared of him, so IN our Backyard he came.......and stayed for 16 wonderful years. :goodvibes I named him Maxwell Smart, Maxx for short, and he sure was a great dog, and got along with everyone, cats, and all. ;) The cats will just have to get used to him.

Awww... a sweet black Labrador!!! They're very sweet and loving souls.

Thank you for protecting him from harm. paw:

Oh I wish I lived closer because I would take him! What a cutie. My parents had a dog that wandered into their lives one day and stayed for around 12 years.

Willy happened to be passing by my mother's house one very hot day. My mother being the kind soul she is invited him in for a cold drink. He stayed for two days as she looked for his owners before she decided she had to take him to the pound. They had one dog and had to put our other dog to sleep a few months before, so she was at the stage of not wanting anymore dogs.

Anyway, she put Willy in the car and started out for the pound. She got all the way there when she realized she couldn't leave him. Back home they both went. He was a great dog, fantastic with my kids who would sit on him like he was a horse. One time my Grandmother fell and they said as they were trying to lift her Willy got right behind her and leaned against her back, just like he knew it would help her to stay in a sitting postion. He was a great dog.

What a beautiful dog! I hope you find his owners soon. Just what you need, huh? :)

The only other thing I am thinking, is that you should bring him to a vet where they can scan for the chip that some owners put in their pets... as a purebred, perhaps they invested the twenty bucks to do it!

This brings to mind a story of ours... we had the same thing happened, this beautiful dog came to our house & adopted us.... He was a purebred as well, but I can't remember of what... I can see him in my head, but can't remember what he was called... anyhow, after three days we found his owners... they had been "away"... anyhow, he was a beauty... They came & got him after the third day, they were negligent again & do you know he got out & was hit by a car within just a few weeks... We should have kept that dog, he was gorgeous, and he really met with an unfortunate incident... I feel bad about it to this day... we could have taken such good care of him, and he was so nice and beautiful...

I hope you find the owners if it was meant to be, or you find him a home that can care for him properly....

THIS is what I found wandering on OUR street this week ;)

It's a huge snapping turtle :p

I certainly couldn't keep that and I didn't want it to get hit by a car. I called the local humane society and they sent out someone to take him back to the woods and the creek.

They estimated his age to be about 30. :)

You might want to see if the dog has been microchiped. Call your vet and see if they have a chip reader. I wish I lived closer also, I would take him, he is a beauty.

Thank you for your efforts!! :thumbsup2 I would also check inside the collar to see if anything's written there. Good luck!!

He is a gorgeous dog! Maybe also call around to radio stations and see if any of them do lost/found dog announcements in their morning news program. Some of them around here do that.

Yes please see if you can have him checked out for a microchip. Our lab has one and while she usually has a collar on - she's good at slipping it off too! The chip reader will bring up a code number that can be matched up with the dogs recorded owners name, address, and phone number. He's a pretty boy and somebody is probably missing him. :goodvibes

This happened to me, only with a fat white Westie (my favorite kind of dog, btw!). He came running right to me, previously had been standing in traffic. I put his big tushy in my backyard and called my sister, a Westie fanatic. I asked her if she could take him home until I found his parents. My baby Newkitty has several chronic conditions and couldn't handle the stress. She saw him in the back yard and flipped OUT.

My sister came and got him, took him home, and bathed him. He peed all over her house. So she brought him back and took him to several houses...long story short, someone knew him and he was back home the next day. She still regrets not just "keeping" him, even though it would have been stealing & wrong. He was that cute! :teeth:

Oh my husband will kill me, but I'll take him. Is he really a black lab?

Wow! First let me update a bit. An hour or so ago I received a call from a very nice woman named Lynne. She saw one of my poster and, while not the owner, she is a member of a Lab rescue organization. She said that if the owner can't be found, they will take him and they are a NO KILL group. After seeing his photo she said he's definitely a black Lab.

Tell you what, I want to keep him here for at least 5 days. That will give you time to talk to hubby. :teeth: It may also bring his family back to him. :thumbsup2 If you're still interested at the end of the week or would like to see him, give me a call. You can email me at virgo10@tampabay.rr.com for my phone number. We just got back from a little walk and he is quite well behaved on a leash. I've named him Kojak after the dog in my favorite book - The Stand. :rotfl:

Between the Lab rescue lady and you I would say this dog has been blessed with a serious dose of Pixie Dust. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

WHat a great looking dog. We took in a dog last year. A stray. He's the best dog ever. I was never much of a dog person, but he has changed me quite a bit. Since I was in high school, I have wanted a yorkshire terrier (silver). Never got one. Well, today hubby walks in the house and says "Guess what a lady just gave me. She said she found it on the autostrada and it was gonna get hit." I was expecting a kitten (we have been talking about getting our older cat a kitten for company). Turns out to be the most beautiful SILVER yorkie I have ever seen. Very healthy and with a collar. No tags. I was suffering from a migraine when he brought it in and told him we did not need another dog and since he obviously belonged to someone else, I did not want to take him. I told him to take him to the neighbor whom I know had a yorkie. Hoping he would take the dog. They were super excited. Turned out they had a female yorkie and this one is a male. Now that my migraine is gone and I am thinking normally, I could almost kick myself for getting rid of this dog. We are gonna ask the neighbor for one of the puppies if they have any. I came to this country with the intention of getting one cat. An abyssinian. No dogs. Hubby needs to stop bringing animals home. :)
