Need Input. We Found a Dog! Wonderful Update!!!! Post 34

Virgo - we are going to Las Vegas on the 13th (Tuesday) and will be back on Saturday (17th). However, my dd who lives across the street would keep him for me. I am so excited at the prospect.

first.. I am delurking

second..I am appalled at the jumping to "take" this dog..or to keep him. He obviously has an owner somewhere and though through what unfortunate events led him to be out and without his tags...he is still probrably someone beloved pet.

To think its just a windfall of good luck that there is a free purebred dog just out for the taking is horrible.

This is my greatest fear if my dog ever got loose...that no matter how much my children were crying for their "taco" (yes....when we adopted him he stole and ate platter of tacos in 3.5 secs within 5 mins of walking in the door) that there was someone out there saying
" wow, what a great mannered dog..he's great on the leash and with kids..lets just keep him" and we would never find him ( yes he is microchiped...but doesnt do a lot of good when a person has no intention of trying to find the owner)

Please make a good effort to find the owners. Just because he doesn't have the tags on at that moment - doesn't mean he is completely neglected.

*my older daughter at one time accidently clipped the leash to the tag loop instead of the collar loop...one tug and those tags were off*

finding a lost dog is just that...finding a LOST dog....that needs to go home....no matter how pure its breeding or how well behaved. On a side note....dogs aren't born with manners....someone must have cared enough to teach the dog.

Issa - that is outrageous. She is making great efforts to find the owner. Your accusations are unwarranted.

Issa ...........you are way out of line here...........Virgo (OP) is one of the fairest dearest animal lovers on this board, and she is going above and beyond what most of us would do, she has stated that she is giving it a few days, she has stated that she has made posters, gone door to door, called the rescue orgs. She is simply getting her options in order ahead of time if need be, this woman has a houseful of cats and has opened her door instead of turning the dog into animal services who after 3 days would probably put an end to this animals life. She should be applauded for doing ALL that she is doing!

I totally agree with this. She found a dog and is looking for the owners but if they can't be found there are people willing to give the dog a good home. If I were closer I would offer as well because my one daughter has one and the other would love tp have a black lab for herself. Black labs are faithful and sweet dogs and very protective.

Have you taken him to the vet or shelter to get scanned for a microchip?
He may not have tags if he has a microchip. If he doesn't and if he doesn't have tags then maybe it was someones way of letting him go in hopes that he would find a nice family to take care of him. I'm not saying this is the right way to go about it, but I am saying that people can sometimes be desperate in certain situations.
I'm glad that so many people have tried to help find him a home, atleast he will be happy no matter what.

I don't think your out of line. The tone of this thread is as you have indicated. However it does seem that the OP is trying hard to find the owners. It's just that most of the replies are along the line of "I'll take the dog".

This is a big fear of mine as well. We have the sweetest black lab - smart, well trained absolutely loves kids. I would hope that if she ever got lost somebody would make an honest effort to locate us.

Yikes! I thought I had made myself clear but for those who didn't get it, here goes.

What I have already done:

Put up 20 posters within a 2 mile radius of my house.

Called the police dept. in two towns and also the sheriff's office. All have my contact information.

Called the only Emergency Vet in our area and left my contact information.

Been in contact with a Lab rescue organization.

What I will do tomorrow:

Take him to my Vet to be checked for a microchip.

Call all the Vets in this town and the surrounding towns.

Call the Shelters in this town and the surrounding towns.

In the mean time, I will keep him here for the next week. He is fed, out of the elements and is getting lots of TLC. Have I toyed with the idea of keeping him myself if all else fails? Yes but I would much rather see him go to someone who is more of a dog person then I am or, better still, back home with his family.

Please make a good effort to find the owners.

What else would you like her to do? According to her first post she's already contacted the police in the surrounding areas. She also stated the following:

Today is Sunday and down here animal control won't come out unless it's an emergency. I'm going to put up signs all around here. Tomorrow I'll call all the Vets in the area, any animal shelters I can find and put a found ad in the local paper.

Just what more should she do to find the owners. I think it's admirable that she's doing so much. I also admire those who have volunteered to take him in. If I were in that area, I'd volunteer to take him as well. He's a lost dog who may need a new home.

Just because he doesn't have the tags on at that moment - doesn't mean he is completely neglected.

Our dog was a stray from Virgina who ended up at the Humane Society in Connecticut. She's just as sweet as she can be, is housetrained, knows commands, is crate trained, etc. I wondered aloud to our vet why no one would claim such a great dog. Her response was, "Well, if she was a stray she was probably looking for a new home."

I'm not criticizing you - I think you've gone to great lengths to find the dogs owners. It's just that most of the replies are offers to take the dog not really suggestions on how to help find the original owner.

Holy Cow...I thought she was way ahead of the game by putting up posters and contacting the police station. She said she planned on contacting the vets in the area tomorrow.

I totally agree it's hard to loose a pet but OP has taken the steps to find the owners.

Reality is....dogs are dumped everyday...with and without collars. I have two in my yard right now and one is a beautiful black lab. That dog is lucky so many people are looking out for him.

I just think maybe you missed all that about posters, calling the police, etc.

I applaude you, what your doing is standard procedure. :thumbsup2 We did it with the Golden we found, in fact, we went door-to-door within a 3 block radius, no takers! :confused3 As far as Issa is concerned: GO BACK TO LURKING! :sad2:

Yes I and others offered to take the dog and no I didn't offer any suggestions for finding the owners because SHE IS ALREADY DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE. It's exactly what we did when we found a dog a couple of months ago and we found the owner.

I'm a dog lover and would love to give a good home to what sounds like a well-behaved and lovable dog. We have a fenced yard - 8 foot high fence and a shaded patio. Of course the dog would be inside most of the time. This dog sounds like what I am looking for - already trained and well behaved. I'm not looking to capitalize on a pure-bred dog and I resent the implication. We don't even know if it is a pure-bred.

About an hour ago we got a phone call from a neighbor of the people who he believed owned our doggy guest. He was going to call them but wanted to make sure we still had the dog. Well the maybe owners called and gave me all the information I needed. It was their dog!! :Pinkbounc

If I had even the slightest doubt, it totally disappeared when Jackson saw his mommy and human brother. He went absolutely nuts. :teeth: So Jackson is now back home with his family.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions and especially marlasmom for offering to give this dog a home. That reminds me, if you are interested in a Lab, the lady I spoke with from the Lab rescue told me they currently have 100 dogs waiting for adoption. Email me if you'd like her contact info.

So a great ending to a rather interesting 24 hours.

COOL!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Glad your story had a happy ending! :cool1:

Hopefully, the owners will get tags for the dogs collar or a microchip. I adopted a cat from the animal shelter, and they microchipped him as part of the adoption fee.

Great ending and I agree that I hope they get a "no slip" collar for this dog and some tags if he has a tendancy to get away. ::yes::
