My dd wants me to go on Splash Mountain but I really don't like heights or drops. One of my friends told me that there are a total of four drops on Splash Mountain... and one is in the dark. I was wondering if that is true, and would I like the ride?

I haven't counted, but there is one really big drop at the end, which you will plainly be able to see before you even board the ride, so you can decide for sure then. There is a smaller one in the dark, and possibly more because I haven't really counted. I'm enchanted with this ride! The theming and the music are great. But if you don't like drops at ALL, then it would be an unpleasant ride for you, I would suspect.

Well, all I can say is...it's not my favorite ride, but I do it every time we go. It's a 'must do'. Yes, there are several smaller drops, one in the dark. Then towards the end, is the one that you see in all the pictures....the BIG drop. It's about 50'. Now, let me say that I really dislike heights. A lot. But, this one is quick. If there were seat belts or a bar, I would feel a lot better. I always feel like I'm going to fly right off the seat. But, I discovered, on our trip in August, that if you lean back, really hard into the seatback, it isn't as bad. I always leaned forward, trying to brace myself and it made it worse. I say, go for it. It's over really fast. My dd, started going on it when she was 6 and is now 10. She actually said it wasn't so bad after the trip in August. We'll see how she feels after our trip in 13 days!!!! Good luck. Just yell really loud.."YeeHaw!!!!! as you go over.

There is a short drop in the dark - makes people think it is the big drop - "to the laughing place" - it is a great ride - as others stated you can see the big drop and decide for yourself but the visuals, music and presentation make this one a must do in my book especially at night as you can see the Castle from part of the attraction

thanks

I hate heights big timebut had a really great time on Splash. Some of the smaller drops are in the dark and they are surprising but fun. I liked the fact that the last big drop you go uphill inside so you don;t see how high you are. I handled it so I think anyone can.

One suggestion...do not ride it a night if you do not like heights. Drops tend to seem worse at night. Other than that, grreat ride. Not your average flume ride. Music and characters are awesome.

I have ridden Splash Mountain several times when it first opened I hate the drop, I decided a few years ago I don't need that out of control feeling in my life. So I don't do it anymore, nor do I ride ToT. I'm not afraid of heights just that falling sensation.

My mom nor my uncle can stand big drops or thrill rides. They both LOVE Splash Mountain, though. As everyone said, there is one dark drop that is rather fast, but it is pretty short. The inside of the ride really should not be missed, though, because it is just awesome!

I am the biggest chicken in the world and won't do Space Mountain, Tot, RnR or Goofy's Barnstormer. I thought I would die on ToT I was soooooo scared. This past September, I did Splash mountain - I don't know what possessed me but on I went. There are two drops in the dark, one is fairly big and the other one isn't so bad. The last drop is huge but over fairly quickly and a small price to pay for the rest of the ride. I would do Splash mountain again and urge everyone to try it at least once since the drops only play a miniscule part of the overall ride.
Have fun!

The last big drop is only a few seconds of an otherwise fabulous ride. I hate drops (won't fly in an airplane !!!), don't like "thrill" rides, won't do ROR, SM or BTMR, but I will do TOT...strange, huh ??? The first time I went on Splash Mtn., the audio animatronics were not working, so it was mostly dark, the drops, then the last big drop...and I still went back a second time. Now, it is one of my 2 or 3 favorite rides in all of the Parks. A not to be missed treat. I stongly encourge you to give it a try...it will soon become your favorite MK ride !!!!!

Thanks to everyone for your encouraging words. My DD (11 yrs) and I have been down every year since she was three. Our last visit I decided to brave the TOT. I too thought I would die. I told myself that if I ever got out of there alive, I would never try another thrill ride again. I too am afraid of the fall. But reading your words of encouragement, maybe I will try this one!!!

Thanks again,

I, too, hate "thrill rides", I did Space Mountain when I was 15 and swore I would never get on another roller coaster again.

My, then, 5 year old wanted to ride Goofy's Barnstormer with me a couple of trips ago (he is now 6-1/2) and I gave in. This trip, Sunday before Thanksgiving, I agreed to go on Splash Mountain because my wife had pulled a muscle in her back the week before we left.

The drop in the dark is the one I thought would be the big one but it turned out to be just a dip and then a short drop. The final big drop really isn't really any worse than the "big" drop on Goofy's Barnstormer. I don't think it is really any taller either.

Oh well, just remember you will get wet at the end and should be prepared if you don't want to get wet...wear a rain pancho.

I think that the major part of the ride more than makes up for the very short, high drop at the end. It really is over before you even know it. I don't like high drops like that but Splash Mountain is okay.

I don't like heights or drops either, and refuse to ride TOT.

BUT, Splash mountain was actually pretty tame, and the drops inside were similar to the drops on POTC or the Maelstrom. The big one was over so quickly, I bareley felt it. I told myself I would just brace myself and count to ten and it would be over and I could live through it. I started counting, said 1, 2, then it was over before I said 3.

I say try it, you will live through it and you might actually enjoy it like I did.

Hello Jaw7373:

Please be sure to read my tip which reveals a "secret" to successfully handling SM without much terror! It's a threat called
'Tip for SM Fence-Sitters' (ore something similiar).

Hope it works for you!

I hated drops/coasters and on my first time through every little dip had me grippiing the safety bar. There are several little drops, but the big one comes with plenty of warning and it's not dark at all. The big "splash" is over so fast there seems to be no time to be scared/uncomfortable.
Now it's one of my favorite attractions. Love the music and the scenery!
Have Fun!

Splash Mountain is a must. Whenever there's a thread about favorite attractions at Disney World, SM is usually toward the top. The themeing is great, the music is good, and the drops are manageable for those who don't like heights or drops.

Do it and you won't regret it.

Spash Mtn is themed after the old Brer Rabbit stories( see Song of the South). Brer Rabbit is always being chased by Brer Fox and Brer Bear. When they finally do catch him he pleads with them "Please don't throw me in the briar patch. You can do anything else you want but please, don't throw me in the briar patch". He says this of course, because he knows that is the only place where he can be really safe. Brer Fox and Brer Bear don't want him to be happy, so they throw him in the briar patch. And that is where this ride comes in. I know people watch from the bridge and see water spraying up and feel the ride is scary but it really isn't. The water is shot by water cannons up over the log boat. If you turn a picture of Spl. Mt upside down and look at it you will see what I mean. Now, those sitting in the front of the boat will get wet as the boat hits its wake at the end of the drop, but people in the back rarely get wet. Once you do the big splash, you round a corner, and a small waterfall might splash those sitting on the right. After that it really turns fun. You can see that scene from the train as it passes through. The storyline is so enjoyable. The first time we rode, I was all tensed up, holding on for dear life, and it was scary. I have since learned to relax. It seemes the more relaxed I am, the more gradual the grade of the drop. And the drops inside are minor, something like the dip at the beginning of POTC. Hope this helps.

I think one of the scariest elements for a first timer is wondering when the big drop will come. And that makes the earlier smaller drops more exciting. The big drop will be clear--it's after Br'er Fox and Br'er have caught Br'er Rabbit.

goofy4tink uses the same strategy that I have found to be very successful (and so have my friends). Don't look down during the big drop. Put your arms straight up and lean back in the seat (makes you look REALLY cool and relaxed in the picture) and look straight out and focus on how beautiful the castle is. I swear the drop is over in less than 2 seconds.

That feeling you're feeling isn't fear --- it's EXCITEMENT!!!!!

I never really thought about it being scarier at night because the castle is so beautiful at night that I think it's worth seeing.

Good luck! I used to be pretty apprehensive about rides like this, but practice makes it enjoyable. Now I wouldn't miss SM and can appreciate how cute the rest of the ride is.
