Here is one that I found after doing a search. This is all about Lhasa apso's http://www.lhasa-apso.org/

EDIT: I just looked at the akc website and they don't have any good information on this breed. It did say that Lhasa Apso's are assertive

Wow!! That's quite a list!! LEt me see, we had one when I was a young pre-teen...

Are they easy to train? Ours was not trained. House training was fine.
Do they get along with Cats? We brought a full-grown Siamese into the house and she was fine with him. They rough-housed like crazy!!
Are they playful? Yes, ours was!
Are they bad? Not a bad bone in her body. Very sweet dog.
How big do they get? About 15 lbs?
Are they hard to maintane (grooming)? Grooming was difficult. We ended up keeping her in a puppy cut. Translates to monthly grooming.
Are they good with kids? Ours was great with kids!
Any health problems in this breed? Don't know.
Do people have allergys to this breed? I really don't know...
any other info you can give me. Our Lhasa was the nicest, sweetest dog...really great.

Good Luck!

I found more links:

The Lhasa Apso is a very healthy and hardy breed, relatively free of health problems. Kidney disease is the most serious health problem found in the Lhasa. The average life expectancy is 12 to 18 years.

The Lhasa Apso is a loyal and loving companion to those he knows. He has a unique temperament and is said to have a big dog personality. He can be rather independent and stubborn with a regal attitude. He views himself as big and important and expects to be treated as such. Patient understanding is a must and no harsh or strict discipline is advised for this breed

Almost daily grooming is an absolute necessity to keep the Lhasa Apso's beautiful coat free of mats. A bath is also suggested every 7 to 14 days. A small amount of conditioner and water used in a spray bottle can help make brushing easier between baths and also help to cut down on static. Care must also be taken to keep the ears clean and to trim the hair on the pads of the feet.

I just got a Lhasa Apso puppy! It is my daughter's birthday and we wanted a cute small dog. We went to the pet store and we surprised her with this adorable dog. We have never had an animal in the house. SO FAR....which is about a week...we are completely in love with this little guy! He has such and wonderful personality. :flower: He has done pretty well with the potty training too. We take him outside and he usually goes! I can't think of anything negative about this dog. They are just so dog-gone CUTE!! If you decide on getting one, I hope he/she is as good natured as mine.
GOOD LUCK... I was just wondering...If any Disney Resorts except animals??? Anyone know??
Thanks!

Thanks all. I have done some web research but i am mainly looking for people who have them.

Bobsdisneymoney The disney hotels are noy pet friendly but they do have kennels and to my understanding you have to come and walk them yourself.

I don't have one myself, but my parents do. He's about 2 years old now & is an adorable little guy!

He was kind of slow to house train. I know because they always bring him with them when they come to my house for a visit. When my dad was in the hospital last year for a major surgery we kept their Llasa for about 3 weeks. He's very sweet, but he did chew up my lace curtains by my front door. The neighbor kids were outside playing & he could see them.

He is very smart - he knows all of his toys by name. My dad will tell him to go get a specific toy & he will go through the house, passing all the other toys & bring back the correct one.

He does growl at my kids a bit. They're older, & he seems to already be very set in his ways. If they sit where he wants to sit or try to pick him up when he's not in the mood, he will growl. But he is used to just being with 2 older adults most of the time, no small kids on a regular basis. He's never snapped at anyone that I know of.

Grooming could be an issue if he wasn't kept cut short. This helps prevent his fur from tangling. I think they take him to the groomer for a cut about once a month. My mom bathes him in between groomings & he is pretty easy to keep clean.

Can't address the allergy issue - no one in our family seems to be allergic to dogs.

He is very playful - with people & with our dog. No idea about how he would get along with a cat.

Good luck on making your choice. We have a 3 year old Westie that we adore. We waited a long time to get a dog & then took it took a lot a research to choose a breed.

I had one all my childhood, she was a good dog, I wish she was still alive

I used to have one. She was the absolute JOY of my life. She had beautiful big brown eyes! We didn't have kids so she was our "daughter". She was easily house trained. She didn't like other cats/dogs. Anyways, we bought her at a pet shop...big mistake (healthwise) because they come from puppy mills who don't really take care of their dogs. At 7 years old, she died of a blood disorder called "autoimmune hemolytic anemia". It was very sad.

I loved my Lhasa Apso! He never ever shed, but I had to brush him every day to keep him from matting up. I kept his fur about an inch to two inches long, never to the floor or anything. His fur right around his back legs and privates were the only parts that would mat badly and it would be a bear for the groomer to keep the mats away and sometimes they did cut too close, but Bandit would never let me brush there!
He was very scared of strangers and would run under the bed when people came over. When going for walks, people could not approach us too closely or he would get very upset and I would have to pick him up so he wouldn't wriggle out of his leash. The only thing here is we got him at about 3 years old, so there is no telling what happened to cause this.
He was very well potty trained. He could stay inside all day and go outside to go to the potty after I got home from work with no problems at all.
And, he rarely ever barked, so whenever he did we always figured it was for something pretty important! I would definitely get one again.

I know it's not the same, but my aunt had a half Shih Tsu and half Lhasa Apso mix. HE WAS THE BEST DOG THAT EVER LIVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss him very much, he's been gone now 10 years. He lived to be 15. He wasn't even *my* dog, but I still miss him. He was very smart, loyal, and seemed to think at 15 pounds who was a "big dog" at times. This dog had no problems barking down/chasing dogs much bigger than him if he perceived them as a threat to him or us.

Regarding the allergy issues. I don't know of anyone with allergies who are only allergic to one breed of dogs. For example, I am allergic to all dogs myself. There isn't one breed that sets me off more than another. They all make me sniffle/wheeze after awhile....but they are soo cute and who can resist petting a cute and furry animal? It's nice that this dog doesn't shed, so that does help. Regarding matted fur, my aunt kept the dog's hair fairly short and took him to the groomers regularly to help avoid this problem.

Good luck! I only wish I could have a pooch, but my allergies and asthma will never let me. :sad2:

We don't have one but some good friends of ours do. It is the sweetest dog. It is good with kids, don't know about cats, they don't have one, they got theirs from a man that showed dogs and it was very well trained (he had the dog trained so well it would only go to the bathroom in one spot in the yard-she wipes her feet on the rug when she comes into the house). I wouldn't say it is playful, but she is cuddley. Grooming is easy, they don't really shed. Their son has bad allergies, but does fine with their dog.

We had a Lhasa Apso and I loved him to death. He was great with us kids and the cats as well. He was a great "watch dog" and would bark at anyone who came up to the house. Friendly as can be. He had jaws of steel and was stubborn though, so if he got something in his mouth, you just had to wait for him to drop it. Loving dog though... and he was about 15-20 pounds (larger for his breed). Not hard to groom at all. He was very playful with both us and the cats!!! And he was a sweet & lovey/cuddly pooch. I miss him quite a bit now and then.

I don't even know why I'm reading this thread but had to chime in here. There is a difference in who is allergic to what and to what degree. I have no problems allergy wise with my Westie but my friend had to give hers away because it was too much for her. She at one time had another dog, it may have be an Llasa Apso, but that didn't bother her allergies. There are websites that tell you about dogs that won't bother your allergies but find one that you can spend time with before you buy anything.

Ooops, double post. Got distracted and hit reply again!

I grew up with two Lasa Apsos and they are great dogs. They got along great with our cats and loved children. I had my own, Chung-Chung which is Tibetian (sp) for little boy, and he was the sweetest dog. We got him when I was 8 or 9 and he passed away when I was 21. He set the standard for all pets that followed him. They are long hair dogs but you can keep them trimmed down pretty easily. I would highly recommend this breed.

I have known three Llasa's in the last few years. My SIL had one. She had to get rid of him because he was tempermental, snapped at the kids and growled. My hairdresser had one. Her's bit her son, unprovoked. The groomer where I take my poodles is very good with dogs. She doesn't like Llasas due to their disposition. If you want a dog that looks like a llasa with a WONDERFUL personality, get a Shih Tzu. I have heard nothing but praise about these dogs.

AddieMae:
I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to advertise your dog on here. And in my opinion you should be more concerned with finding the dog a good home than to make some money off your used pet.

Jasminesmommy:
I know of 2 different cases where Lhasa's have ruptured discs in their backs. In one case the family put down the dog and in the other case the family opted for an $8000 surgery and the dog has very little use of it's back end. I doubt you will ever find a dog breed that is 100% free of health issues, just make sure you are aware of them before making a decision. If you know what to look for before hand you may be able to detect problems early on and keep them from getting worse.

My parent's have a Lhasa/Maltese cross. They bought her at a pet store long before we knew what a puppy mill was. She is dumb as a post but very friendly to people, curious about my cat (chases him), under 10lbs, gets groomed about every 2-3 months and weekly baths. The $8000 Lhasa is a cute little dog, full of energy, good with kids but not other dogs. She is also under 10 lbs. I can't say much about allergies but they neither Lhasa sheds nearly as bad as my border collie or cat!

This is very accurate in my experience.

I had a Lhasa who lived to be 13. Be aware that "independent and stubborn" can translate into "being a pain in the rear to train." ;) They are extremely loyal, and mine was quite playful. I did not have a cat when I had him, but he did get along fine with other dogs, as long as they realized he was in charge. He actually treated the other dogs in a very motherly way.

When I first had him, I tried to keep his hair long, but brushing him several times a day just got to be too much for me, so I kept him with a puppy cut. The hair also has to be pulled out of their ears, or they get a lot of buildup inside.

OMG when I saw this post, I knew I just had to reply!

My parents bought me a Lhasa Apso when I was 8 years old and unfortunately :guilty: I had to put him down this past January because of his old age. He lived to be 17 years old and he was the best dog my family has ever had!!

Of course at 8 years old I wasn't able to help in the decision of what breed of dog to buy. But now at 25, I'm looking to get a dog of my own and I'm highly considering getting a Lhasa Apso again. The only thing holding me back from going with the same breed is I don't want to compare the new dog to Coco.

Now to answer your questions:

Are they easy to train? My parents didn't have problems training him at all. But as with all dogs, you need to get on top of the potty training early and don't rely on pee pee pads. I have friends who are doing this with their dogs and they are having problems with the dogs not wanting to go outside.

Do they get along with Cats? Sorry, can't answer this one for you. We aren't cat-people so we never had a cat when my Lhasa was around. He did however get along great with other dogs, as we did have another dog in the family and he was great with the neighbor's dogs.

Are they playful? Definitely! We completely spoiled him with all kinds of toys from pet stores and its funny because some of his favorite toys were stuffed animals and a tennis ball tied in a sock! He loved his stuffed animals and he'd hold them between his paws and lick them. We called them his "babies" because he would take care of them as if they were!

Are they bad? Well depends on what you mean by this. As a puppy, he did get into things like chewing up my moms high heels but I think thats a phase most puppies go thru. He definitely wasn't a barker and he didn't jump up on people when they came over. He never snapped at us or at people who came to our house. When people came over, they would always tease (sarcastically) that he was such a good "guard dog" because he'd never bark at them, he'd just wag his tail and lick people, no matter who they were.

How big do they get? His highest weight was 20 lbs.

Are they hard to maintane (grooming)? Well they do need to go and get groomed because they are long-haired dogs. This can be costly, but its part of what comes with breeds like this. During summer months, we'd have him get shorter hair cuts to keep him cooler and to cut costs down a little more. He did get baths in the bath tub (and he was always so good) and he would get brushed every couple days. This is something you'll need to keep up with bc they have thick, non-shedding coats and sometimes this breed can get matted knots in their fur that will need to be cut out if they are too thick to be brushed out. Coco loved to be brushed (esp on his hiney and under the chin) and when we'd bring out his brush, he'd come running to our side because he liked it so much!!

Are they good with kids? He was great with me as an 8 year old and I have to admit, I was a pain when I was younger and my mom would yell at me for "teasing the dog". My parents always said they were surprised that he never snapped at me or anything like that.

Any health problems in this breed? The only problem we had with him was his underbite. Lhasa Apsos have underbites and their bottom teeth stick out ALL the time. Due to placque (sp?) build up, his teeth got a brownish build-up but that was taken care of with doggie toothpaste and brushing his teeth every so often. He wasn't exactly crazy about having his teeth brushed, so we didn't keep up with it all the time.

Do people have allergys to this breed? Actually, quite the contrary. I'm allergic to dogs and cats that shed. My parents did a TON of research on non-shedding dogs and Lhasa Apsos were one of the few breeds that would work with my allergies. I have very bad allergies (I become a sneezing, eye-watering maniac when I go to friends houses who have dogs and cats) and I had no problems with my dog.

I dont think there is any other advice I can give, other than you will love this breed!! My dog was an absolute love bug and other people who I know and have met that have Lhasas always seem to love them too!! You won't be disappointed!!
