Hi I know this is a bit off topic, but I follow this board often since I have a foot injury. I am a bit, well a lot concerned about my neice and am wondering if she might have autism. I know that austim seems to be more common in boys, but I was wondering if anyone has any good websites, or just plain info on what are some of the signs. I have worked with special needs children, but my experience is with the older...and much more severe set. Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome. Is there a way you can broach your nieces parents with info. It is important that she have an accurate dianosis so that the appropriate services, schooling can begin. Here is Massachusetts my son was diagnosed by a neurologist and psychologist (who specializes in Autism/PDD). Luckily he was only two so he immediately began services in and out of the home. He is almost 7 now and in school full time with supports. If this is a diagnosis she receives it is not the end of the world. There is so much out there for our kids now. Just put Autism in your search engine and you will be amazed what comes up. Good luck.

Sks mom , and signtalker...
Here are the main problems. My neice is almost 2, she will turn two in October this year. There are several problems and I really have no where to turn, thats why I have come here for help. The Mother my sister is...well not attentive...and difficult to approach on any issues let alone something like this. I have been talking to our Mom about my observations. I have been conserned for sometime now, but after attempting to take her to a movie yesterday became even more conserned. She didnt begin to talk until just very recently and at that she only says a few things. She is very set on her schedule and gets very upset if anything is changed. She is very nervous. She also seems oblivious to pain, she can bang her hand in a door and not even utter a single cry, or fall and cut herself and never even bat an eye. She doesnt like to really be cuddled, sometimes she will let you but rarely for very long. I wanted to gather as much information as I could so possibly we can get this diagnoised or figure out if I am just being over protective Aunt here. Like I said, the Mom is no help. She really shouldnt have custody of the kids to begin with(but you didnt hear that from me).

OK if it were me, the first thing I would do is see what early intervention programs are available. I would also see about preschool through your town/city. here is Mass when a child turns three if they meet the criteria (or are referred by an early intervention program and meet criteria) they begin public school (unless they are in need of a private placement-that's another story).

The earlier something can be done the better. I can't begin to imagine how hard it will be to aproach her but time is of the essense. PM me if you want. You may also want to check out human service agencies in your area that can refer you to support groups and services.

SKS Mom.....I sent you a pm. thanks again. Any info helps here
