Remember in the 90s when Vegas was playing to families? We had a blast. I was about 12-13, brother was 7-8. We did the themepark at MGM (long gone), but there are tons of family friendly toursity stuff to do, and I'm betting every big casino has a kids club type of deal now. Seriously, that could still be an amazing family trip.

We went to WDW pretty much every year as a kid, and then to Hilton Head/Destin a couple of times a year and usually took one other "other" trip. DC, NYC, Europe (once), Vegas, Chicago, CA. Then my folks would go on one adults trip a year. On our family trips our folks, or the extended family, would always put us in kiddie camp for a few days/nights whatever. I know the Vegas opinion might be unpopular, but there is a TON of stuff to do there, and the travel aspect is SO easy.

ETA: My brother and I were loving Vegas so much when we "had to go the Grand Canyon" we cried leaving the hotel. We were supposed to do Hoover Dam and all that, we hated it so much, and mom didn't want to go either, we just turned around about an hour into the drive. About 3 hours, and many drinks on his part (he even let me have some), we were at the pool and Dad said it was the best decision ever. I think that was also the first trip my parents let me charge stuff to the room like we could do our at local pool, and I thought I was SO cool! I still secretly love it.

I'd go with the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area. You can stay in hotels, or do as we do and rent a cabin in the mountains. We love having a cabin, and there are so many to choose from. We enjoy ones with pool tables/air hockey, rockers on the porch with a nice view, and a hot tub.

There is so much to do in the area, lots of touristy type things, Dollywood, great restaurants, etc. And of course the Smoky Mountains, lots of scenic drives and hiking and waterfalls, etc.

YES! Please visit Gatlinburg! After the fires this winter, they need tourist dollars more than ever:) That should have been my first thought, since everyone I know owns a place up there, and we don't have to rent them, I kinda forget about it being a tourist place, but yes, it'd be super fun for your family ages!

OK - so I have looked over all the responses and while I would love another cruise or an all-inclusive, we all actually decided on Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. The kids are REALLY excited about it and it is somewhere none of us have ever been. So thanks to those who suggested it! A few other people I know suggested it as well.

Now - to find a place to stay. If I rent a cabin, are there companies that anyone suggests renting through? I saw lots of bad reviews of a place called Cabins USA, but have not dug into any others yet. If we stay in a hotel, does anyone have some suggestions? Preferably one that has 1 or 2 bedroom suites and lots to do and a great pool area.

Thanks!

Gatlinburg hotels - the Dollywood one would be convenient if you're going there, Edgewater is super centrally located, as is the Doubletree.

Cabins - I know a lot of people that own thier's outright, but I've used Cabins of the Smokeys to rent really large ones for a big group a couple of times. They were great.

I just called one of my best girlfriends who owns a place there, now we're going next weekend. Thanks Dis!

We're planning to go to the area again next spring, late March/early April. It's one of our favorite vacation places so I'm already starting to do my research again. :)

Oh, that is great that you decided on Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg!! I hope you have a wonderful time! So much to see and do. You could get on-line and research activities and stuff, also you can request one of their vacation planning booklets too. We did a couple new things on our last trip, the Alpine Coaster for one. It was awesome! DH and I could have ridden together, but we chose to go separately and it was a blast!! I would do it again! There was also a new place, it was still under construction and not quite finished, I think it was called Foxfire or Firefox, not sure. They had a zip line (we didn't do that) and a swinging bridge. The bridge was fun to walk on. And "The Island" was just being built too, HUGE ferris wheel - we bought the 2 ride pass so we could ride during the day and again at night. They were building a hotel there when we visited, restaurants, etc. We love driving through the National Park too, there are lots of places to stop and hike on the trails - some lead to waterfalls. Just so much there, you can't do it all in one trip.

We have rented cabins twice from Sunset Accommodations and had great luck with them. Our third visit their website was down so I decided to "just look" on Aunt Bug's Cabin Rental page and found one we liked so decided to rent from them. Big mistake. Big, BIG!! Would NEVER rent from them again. The cabin was filthy, stuff like the placemats on the table had crusty bits of food so obviously hadn't been washed, throw rugs in the kitchen had dirt under them so hadn't been cleaned, the kitchen floor was sticky, lipstick writing on the mirror in the bathroom, and lots more stuff we had to deal with. I spent two hours cleaning the cabin myself. The hot tub had a leak and we had to constantly add water, the outdoor grill was broken, etc. All they would do was say "sorry." Some of their reviews are good so some people have had okay luck with them, but there are poor reviews too. I'm not sure who we will rent a cabin from next time, as the owner of Sunset had some health issues and closed their business rather abruptly. There are LOTS of cabin rental places. I'll just have to do a search on here to see places people recommend, and go to Trip Advisor as well and see what other companies' ratings are.

You are so lucky you have friends with their own cabins so you don't have to rent one! :) I wish we could go at the time of the year when the drive to Clingman's Dome is open, but it's always still closed when we go in late March/early April. That's the best time for us to go though so we always have to miss it. We always enjoy the arts & crafts area, especially Alewine Pottery and I always buy something from there, last time it was a lamp. Not sure what I'll want on our next trip. I love the pieces they make with actual leaves. So pretty. And so many restaurants to choose from - we love Bennett's BBQ, Huck Finn's, The Apple Barn, The Old Mill, and others. Already looking forward to going back again. We generally stay 2-3 nights at the Hampton Inn in Gatlinburg (by Obergatlinburg) first and enjoy that area, then we rent a cabin for a week in the Pigeon Forge area.

You said you're going next weekend, come back and let us know how it was! :)

Super lucky and my folks own a place in Destin on the beach where I have clothes and I have a key and parking sticker (I never drive there though, I HATE road trips), so pretty lucky!

I can already tell you about next week, staying with a girlfriend who's cabin is right across from the Alpine coaster - over the creek - as you're going into downtown, we'll walk around, go to the aquarium, hike if the weather is good, run to Knoxville to eat at Chesapeake's and visit a couple of favorite boutiques, eat the peddler, maybe grab a bite/drink at the pub, ride the coaster, maybe go to Dollywood. Really, we decide what we're going to do on the way there but it'll contain some or all of those things. The Peddler is a must.

Destin - I've heard of it, is that near Tampa? We enjoy Florida too, DH's Dad/step-Mom have a place in Palmetto where they spend the winters so we go down every couple of years or so. Last time we went we stayed in a condo for 10 days in Cocoa Beach, we like that area too, and Daytona Beach.

We went to the Aquarium our first visit to Gatlinburg, I remember riding on the moving walkway twice. I just loved looking above my head and seeing all the fish, etc. swimming. We went to Dollywood our first visit too, wouldn't mind going back again as I'm sure some things have changed since we were there. The Peddler - is that a newer restaurant? I don't remember that one. We went to Dick's Last Resort last time, people either love it or hate it. We loved it. It's quite unusual. I was a server myself for 12 years, would have loved being able to speak to a few of my customers the way the servers are allowed to speak at Dick's. We just had an appetizer and drinks when we were there, the food doesn't seem to get very good reviews.

We've been lucky and had great weather for each of our visits there, and we really enjoy some of the hikes. Loved going to the Laurel Falls, I remember one family that had an elderly person using a walker. She was determined to make the hike. :) It's such a beautiful area. I'd love to go in September sometime, when kids are back in school.

My DH is retiring this year, and we may be looking for some new places to visit. Will have to check out the Gatlinburg area! That's an area of the country I have never been.

Destin is close to Panama City, but way less redneck. Its part of the emerald coast. Its pretty enough for a continental US beach.

The Peddler is an institution: https://peddlergatlinburg.com/. It has a salad bar even I enjoy and I flipping hate buffets/sharing food - bleh! It has steamed oysters on the salad bar and lots of really unusual items and is SO immacutately clean. I also don't usually care for dessert, but their key lime pie is excellent too. The steaks are solid.

I don't eat at chain restaurants as a general rule, so I haven't been to Dick's and I hate restaurants with antics/that are loud- but lots of people love 'em. (I'm weird and "picky" in a different way. I love uni, but won't touch a hot dog...lol.) I can see how being a server and knowing their schtick it would be fun to go and see it! That stuff just isn't my bag. I love that Gatlinburg and WDW has something for everyone!

The fall in the Smokeys - it turns more in October and even sometimes early Nov. - is just so beautiful. The drive up the dragon (https://adayinthesmokies.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/gatlinburg-the-dragon-tail) is just breath taking, but its amazing anytime, when its green its also gorgeous. I hate driving, but I love riding shotgun for that! I can't recommend it more for anyone visiting.

Again, glad to hear of this love for the mountains! :yay:

Thanks for the link to the Peddler, I will check it out as we do enjoy trying different restaurants.

It would be nice to see the Smoky Mountains with the colors turning in the fall, but I doubt that will ever happen as my husband is primarily a farmer and harvest season (corn and soy beans) generally begins right after our wedding anniversary, September 27th. In fact there have been times that we've gone away for the night to celebrate our anniversary and come home the next day to the combine going to the field. They try to be finished by November 1st, but it doesn't always work out that way so no vacations for us in October. I've always wanted to see the New England states in the fall too...sigh. :( We haven't driven on the dragon, but the year we shared a cabin with DH's sister and her husband they took their motorcycle on it and said it was beautiful so we need to do that. I do enjoy beautiful drives.

You mentioned you hate road trips, I used to as well when I was younger. We took several trips to Florida in the 80's and 90's and we generally flew as I hated the l-o-n-g drive, so boring and I just wanted to "get there" and start enjoying our vacation. But we enjoy road trips now, and actually prefer to drive on vacations rather than drive. I never thought I would enjoy it, but it's nice being able to stop and see things along the way. I would love to do Route 66 one of these years. :) And flying has changed so much, it just isn't as much fun anymore.

That's so neat that your husband farms. My mom has a large farm, but other than her garden, she basically just leases the land out. My grandfather had a huge farm he ran himself. I did NOT get the farming gene though, but I love seeing the land.

I used to like road trips, its not the "hurry up and get there," its that I adore boarding a plane and knowing I won't get lost, don't have to deal with traffic, etc. Also, when I died they dislodged my sternum doing CPR, so riding in cars or planes still can get painful after a while. Nothing I do about it for overseas, but it bothers me more and more as time sitting progresses. Still, grateful every day to be on this side of the dirt!

I hope everyone visiting Gatlinburg soon loves it and is extra nice to the locals. The fire this winter was no joke and when I first went back I was sure glad to see so much was still standing!

When I was a little girl I always dreamed of marrying a farmer, and that dream did come true. DH's grandfathers were farmers and his Dad was, so he learned to farm at an early age and was actually driving tractor on his own when he was 5. I loved the summer we were dating, I learned a lot about farming and really enjoyed riding in the tractors/combine with him. His Dad is now semi-retired so doesn't help a lot with the farm anymore, so it's just DH and his brother-in-law and they are both getting "on up there in years" too so it won't be long and they will want to start slowing down. DH is also a part-time crop insurance adjuster.

Neither of our children were interested in helping on the farm when they got older. But our son does come back to help with harvest, and he actually enjoys it and I think he kind of wishes he would have bought into the business when he was younger.

Thanks for explaining why you don't enjoy road trips, I can understand how you feel about the getting lost and dealing with traffic part. If I had to deal with those I wouldn't want to go on road trips either, but DH does all the driving, I just get to look out the window and enjoy the scenery. :)

Oh my goodness, you actually died and they had to perform CPR?! Wow!! I can only imagine how grateful you are to have a second chance at life!! I count my blessings daily and every morning that I wake up I am truly grateful for yet another day above the ground. :) DH and I both turn 60 this year, and I cannot understand where the years have gone, and flown by so FAST!! ;)

We always use outback vacation rentals. (the name, with no spaces .com). Full disclosure, I've read some bad reviews - but we've never had a bad experience. It's a gated neighborhood with a community pool on top of a mountain. These are more houses then cabins. They all have one or two Jacuzzi tubs inside and a hot tub on the deck. Pool tables, movies, other games. They supply dishes, linens, and few other essentials. At the bottom of the mountain is a trolley stop, so you can take that into town and not deal with parking if you feel like the touristy stuff. But it's also in a spot that allows you to take the bypass around Gatlinburg if you feel like going into the National Park for the day. The Gatlinburg visitor center is at the trolley stop too, so you can get information and they have a little tourist shop there too. If you want to head to Pigeon Forge, you're on the right side of Gatlinburg as well, so you don't have to drive through town.

A guest ranch. There are several in Colorado, Wyoming, montana, etc. I have been going to a ranch every summer for 26 years. Started when our daughter was 6. And now take my grandchildren. Wonderful family vacation. Most have programs for kids and teens great riding, scenery.

We have a 7 year old girl and 13 year old boy who while they enjoy time with mom and dad, would love a place where they could go off and do their own thing at kids/teen clubs.
Atlantis has three different kid clubs, ranging from Atlantis Kids Adventure for ages 3-12, to Crush, a teen nightclub for ages 13-17. In between is Club Rush, for ages 9-13. My family has done all 3. They're great facilities.

AKA

Crush

Club Rush is only open during school vacation periods.

Really glad/surprised to hear the Smokey Mountain love here!

It's always one of the most recommended family vacation destinations whenever one of these threads pops up. Oddly enough, it's one of the few relatively "close" destinations I've not taken my family to. But, it's on the list :)
