At work we are planning on doing America as a topic with our out of school care children (age 5 to 10).

Any ideas on what kind of things we could do with them, we want to teach them traditional things American children do. We plan on doing this topic in November.

Also any recipes would be most welcome though it has to be for things that don't contain nuts as one of the children has a serious allergy.

Hope you can be of some help. :D

November is our Thanksgiving. Maybe you could have a traditional Thanksgiving meal during that month?

I was going to suggest a Thanksgiving meal in Nov. You can find many pumpkin pie recipes on the internet. Columbus day is in October. February brings Washington and Lincoln's birthday. Cherry pie is for Washington's bday.

Have you thought of pen pals from the states. My son had one from another state and learned a lot that way.

We were talking about that this afternoon after I put in this post, we thought it would be good if we could link up with an after school club in the US.

Well Tigger, a rite of passage in this country is a trip to WDW! And I'm sure your children have passed that test with flying colors!

Halloween and trick-or-treating are a big deal here. Do the children do that over there? Of course, we're drowning in bags of candy for weeks after that.

Your tag says something about "sending little flat people around the world". Is that referring to Flat Stanley? "cause I was going to mention him. You could have some of us send him to people we know who live near historic sites or whatever.

We did Flat Stanley with them last year when every child sent one out. Not sure about sending them out again as last time around 11 never came back and some of the children were upset.

I am so sorry to hear about the Stanleys that didn't come back. It amazes me that people won't go an extra inch to make a kid happy. :(

Many schools in the U.S. have after school programs. Our school has one for years. That might work for pen pals. If you'd like a contact person maybe I could get you a name. School does not start for another 8 days.
