I know this is not strictly Adventures By Disney related but I know all you American travellers are the best people to ask about this.

One of my friends is Irish but lives in California and is travelling home to Ireland this summer to see her family for the first time since 2019. A lot has changed since then and she has no clue where to start looking for travel insurance which includes Covid cover.

This is what I have with my travel insurance
  • Medical Expenses covered if you or your travelling companions are diagnosed with Covid-19 abroad.
  • Additional Travel or Accommodation Expenses abroad if you need to extend your stay due to a Covid-19 diagnosis.
  • Cancellation cover if you are diagnosed with Covid-19 within 14 days of departure.
  • Cancellation cover if you are hospitalised with Covid-19 within 28 days of departure.
  • Cancellation cover if your travelling companion(s) are diagnosed with Covid-19 within 14 days of departure.
  • Cancellation cover if your travelling companion(s) are hospitalised with Covid-19 within 28 days of departure.
  • Cancellation cover if somebody you have arranged to stay with abroad is diagnosed with Covid-19 within 14 days of departure.
  • No Cover for cancellation due to government travel restrictions or lockdown.
What American travel insurance companies offer the same or similar?

My friend is a solo traveler, under 50, no underlying health conditions and the trip to Ireland is 20 days and is a regular holiday, no cruise or activities which would need extra cover.

Honestly, it depends on the policy, not just the company. Check with Insure My Trip dot com or Squaremouth dot com. You can put in your specific details and filter by coverage and see the actual coverage for tons of different policies and companies. All rated A or A+. You can also call their toll-free numbers and talk to an expert. I do that each time I buy a policy, because what is and isn't covered on which policy and with what company is always changing.

You're welcome! And like a travel agent, there's no cost to use these services, and you can buy directly from their websites (or over the phone) for the same price you'd get on the insurance companies' websites. And you can keep using them for updates, questions, changes, etc.

Other things to look for in the policy contract or ask about -

-is Covid coverage specifically named as included or excluded -ie your policy info above has specific Covid inclusion references, some do not
-is “Pandemic” a defined term in the policy (ie something defined as declared by WHO or CDC)
-Is there any reference to “Pandemic”as an exclusion/not covered (ie - Covid may not be specifically called out but may end up be excluded by definition if policy says disease or illness defined as a Pandemic are an excluded category)
-Some policies with “pandemic” exclusions may say something like: for purposes of the policy, Covid is considered an illness and thus included in all coverage references for other illnesses.
- the last bullet in your coverage list above appears to exclude coverage when government travel policies recommend to restrict or prohibit travel, so also consider Cancel For Any Reason coverage if someone wants that option

I’d not go only with what a rep says, but also ask to see the policy contract to be sure everything the rep says is what’s in the contract. Most are reputable but some reps may misinterpret or not clearly explain and most policies here have a clause with something about verbal statements are not valid, only what is included in the policy will apply.

That is a very good point. Most insurance policies give you a week or two to review the actual policy, and you can cancel it with no penalty up until that point. Always read through the policy as soon as you get it!

Another resource to consult is Trip Insurance Store. Give them a call, they are very knowledgeable.
