DH, myself & DD4 will be leaving Aug 30 traveling to WDW, we will leave Sept 2. This is our 1st trip so we have no idea what to expect. I have to make PS tomorrow and I do not have a clue where to start planning. How can I make reservations and plans without the park times??? We have an 11 hour drive to WDW so I plan on us eating at Chef Mickey's on arrival day since it is not in a park. The only other place we are set on eating is CRT. I also want to book the dining plan but am afraid of hurricanes cancelling our plans and I understand trip insurance does not cover hurricanes. Please tell me what you would do?? I want to make my reservations based on the extra hours.

but I believe that having PS's (or ADR's as they are now called) are a great idea.

If you go to allearsnet.com you can check out the menus of all the restaurants in WDW. This might help you decide what places interest you and your family. If you are paying cash for meals, the prices are listed as well (if you're on the dining plan, the costs don't really matter in the long run).

We usually think about where we think we'll be spending the day and then select our table service meals at that particular park. If you think a larger lunch might be better, you might want to make lunch your main meal (plus the menus are often the same but with lower prices). We like to do counter service for lunch with a sit down dinner being the bigger meal.

Remember that there is nothing committing you to the PS (if you find it's not going to work for you, then you just skip it - I try to be courteous and call to cancel a PS if I know far enough in advance, figuring someone else might want one and this will free a space up) so it makes good sense to have ones for those restaurants that you really want to try. There have been stories lately of people w/o PS's being turned away at the door of many restaurants. You are going during a slightly less crowded time I think, but I still recommend you make a few.

This board is great for recommendations. Just post what type of food your family likes and some idea of your projected itinerary and you will get a bunch of recommendations.

I'll start...we always try a character meal so we usually do Chef Mickey's. Couldn't get it for this trip so we're trying Liberty Tree Tavern for dinner meal. We also love O'Hana's for the atmosphere and fun (many are not thrilled with it but our kids like it so we go back), and we're trying Le Cellier at EPCOT this time as well. Also going to Whispering Canyon at WL based on everyone's reports.

Good luck with the planning. Don't look at it as a chore, look at it as food fun!

I'd recommend the Cinderella character buffett at 1900 Park Faire at the Grand Floridian over Chef Mickey's any day-especially with a daughter! The food is remarkable, so good we felt a few ribs pop by the time we were done-the bread pudding with the warm vanilla sauce (with real flecks of vanilla in it) is to die for!

I'd say with a 4 year old girl (and I've got one too, and a 6 year old girl) you want to always eat as early as possible since the kids always seem to get hungry a lot faster than normal, and then get seriously cranky if they don't eat. This observation was learned after several dozen trips, so make the PS's for early times, like the 11:30 lunch at the Crystal Palace in MK, that's a good one. Good luck!

What you can do is find out what days the extra magic hours are and decide what park you will go to on what day- that is what I did. on disney's website you can find out what parks are open early or stay open later on what days. It will not give exact hours but at least you can plan which day to do what park.

Character breakfast at Ohana in the Polynesian is terrific and really fun for the kids. Mickey, Goofy, and Chip and Dale are there in Hawaiian attire! The kids have a parade around the dining room. It is easy to access on the monorail.
