Need help with Christmas "hints"

We are giving the kids a trip to Washington, D.C. for Christmas. We want to wrap a series of boxes, each containing a clue. Obviously, to build up the fun factor, we want as many clues as possible without giving it away.

The ideas we have come up with so far (in no particular order) are a penny (Lincoln Memorial on back), a small American Flag, a small car/van (since this will be a driving trip) a map of the Eastern US (not including Florida, or they would think a trip to WDW!). That's not much.

I don't want anything obvious, at least not in the first few boxes, but then we will progress on to a book about the Smithsonian and a Kid's Guide to D.C. (in the last box probably).

I'm sure that all of my creative Dis friends can help out here!............P

I would say for one of the last boxes put the White House or something like that.

How about a picture of President Bush. A picture/stuffed animal of a panda for the zoo(one of the most popular attractions there). I'll think on it and get back to you. I'll ask the kids for ideas.

We went to the zoo in September while there and loved seeing the Pandas. Maybe a stuffed Panda Bear, if you are considering visiting the zoo?

My first thought was the panda.

You could also give a dollar bill, since paper money is made in DC (and it's a good tour if you are interested).

We are doing something similar for our DDs and mostly I'm using pictures I printed off the computer. You could do things from the Smithsonian Museums that you plan to visit (a fake gem to represent the Hope Diamond or a toy airplane for the Air and Space Museum, etc), and things like cherry blossoms, a copy of the preamble to the Constitution, a toy soldier (for Arlington National Cemetery), etc.

I like laurie31's idea. Other photos you could print out that might be obscure would be the Iwo Jima memorial (the flag raising), or a photo of the actual raising.

Are there plans to tour the Pentagon? If so, check with the local military recruiters and see if they might be able to spare any rank insignia you could wrap as a clue. In fact, this might even be good if you don't plan to tour the Pentagon, considering the WWII, Vietnam, and Korea memorials as well as the Smithsonian's Museum of American History display of American military history.

If they are old enough, what about some historical clues. Historically significant events that have taken place there. ie, Martin Luther King
