Need help with an AP and TIW question

We are booked for 5 days onsite with room and ticket package (5 adults) for the end of April 2014. We will be staying another 9 days offsite. I am thinking about turning my 8 day park hopper into an annual pass on the night of arrival, as I am hopeing to go back (DW and me) in September. Looking at the TIW it looks like it could save our group a fair bit of money during our stay on and off site. I know that I have to purchase the AP before buying the TIW.
My question is can you change a package ticket to an AP before going to a park, and if so, does this create any problems? We are planning on eating in DD the night we arive.

Thanks for any help you can give this newbee. This will be our first time on site, and the first time at DW in 20 years.

You should be able to do the upgrade to AP and get the TIW card at Downtown Disney (DTD).
You'll want to go to Guest Relations.
