OK - I have always planned on singing a song to my DF at our wedding reception... now that it's almost here... I need a song to sing. We don't particularly have a song that is "ours". We have been dating for 13 years and it has been pretty rocky at times. We almost called it quits 3 years ago and it was the hardest, most challenging, yet rewarding time of my life. It made me pursue MY dreams of singing and building my self-confidence and esteem. :) Because of our struggles, I was thinking of singing God Blessed the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts. Oh yea, by the way, we both LOVE country music. However, we also both love old music. For example, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, all the old Gershwin music and Cole Porter... I was flipping through a few music books but didn't really see anything that stuck out. We are not real sentimental, sappy people. No matter what I sing, I will struggle to make it through without crying... I figured if I sing a song I love and know, then I would make it through it easier. I just want to make sure it expresses how I feel about him.   Any suggestions?? You have all been so wonderful with everything else, I would love to hear what you all have to say!!! But answer soon, I have to start practicing!! :Pinkbounc :goodvibes

I Love Rascal Flatts! I don't really have any suggestions, but wanted to say that singing to your DH would be the sweetest thing ever! I do not have the talent to ever attempt that one!

I think it's so beautiful that you are going to sing for him. I agree that no matter what you sing it will be hard to get through (I would be crying my eyes out). I am sure your DF will be touched. Speaking to the old song idea here are a few "At Last by Etta James", " I can't help falling in love" Elvis Presley. "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" Dean Martin. I am not a huge country fan but there is this one song from Garth Brooks when he had and alter ego called Chris Gaines. The song is called "lost in you" and its just lovely. The lyrics are great and the harmony is great. If you go to the website I inserted you can read the lyrics in case you don't know the song. http://www.lyricscrawler.com/song/2913.html .
I hope this helps! Good luck and congrats! :cool1:

I happen to love Bless the Broken Road and think it would definitely be a perfect song, but if you want some more choices, what about Sara Evans' "I Could Not Ask For More" or Jamie O'Neal's "When I Think About Angels"?

I love Broken Road and since that was your first thought, then I'd go with it. Another country song I love and think would be appropriate is It's Your Love by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. I think the words are beautiful.

Man, oh man, happylalagirl: You are going to SING to your husband during your wedding? I bow before you! I am hoping I will be able to speak!

It sounds like we love the same kind of music--and I vote for Broken Road, too. I love how it is all about trying to make love work, getting our hearts broken in the process, usually...and coming out stronger. Just the line of, "I wiped my brow and kept pushing through" makes it worthwhile. The only thing is that I tend to think of it as a "second time around" love song, ya know?

I also love "When I fall in love (it will be forever)"--which is an old standard. Sinatra and Celine Dion did a great duet.

Let us know what you decide, and again, you are so awesome for doing this!

KimNKel- Are you in my head?? I love "When I fall in love".

happylalagirl- I love that you said "Blessed the broken road". I too had a struggle with my DF (Now DH) 2 years ago- and like you- it was the hardest most trying time. That song reminds me of that struggle that only brought us closer. Had my DH and I not went through that, we certainly wouldnt be married today. I believe there is no relationship out there that hasnt endured its most trying hour. They take work. I love that you are going to sing to your DF and I love the song you have chosen. If it describes your relationship, and your feelings- then- GO FOR IT! :cheer2:
I, too, love your taste in music! Whatever you choose- let us know!

You know my vote is with the Rascall Flatts song!! It means so much to us and i can't wait to walk down the aisle to it.

There are some great Garth songs....the Dance comes to mind. ( I am also a huge country fan).

Whatever you choose it will be perfect!

It's Your Love

:thumbsup2

love tim and faith! :)

oh, but that's a duet...don't know how that would work... :confused3

how about "My Best Friend" ?

you are so brave!!! I don't even think I'm going to get down the aisle without crying, let alone my vows, so I could forget about singing!!! Here's one huge vote for "Bless the Broken Road!" That is OUR SONG, so I'm a little biased, but I love it. I can't hear it on the radio without getting teary eyed. To me, it's more than just about love, it's about how difficult life can be (and how wonderful), but at the end of the day it doesn't really matter as long as you have each other.

We met by a series of strange (and somewhat "broken") coincidences, and if just one of them hadn't happened at that specific time and place, we never would have met-- so we think there was a "broken road" that led us straight to each other, just like the song-- so I love it.

We had been dating for a while and one day we were watching tv and I was talking about how we didn't have a song, but that whenever I heard Bless the Broken Road I thought about us. And he replied, "Well, you can't just pick a song, something has to happen that MAKES it your song." And, just then, he kicked the remote off the bed, it went flying, the tv went on to some random channel, and would you believe it, there was Rascal Flatts playing OUR SONG. And for him, that was enough of an even to make it our song :cloud9:

Kudos to you for singing--- we're all proud of you! :cheer2:

I love Rascal Flatts! My favorite song is "My Wish" but i don't exactly think thats what youre looking for. "God Bless the Broken Road" sounds perfect. My little boy and I sing it in the car, but I don't think there's any way I'd have the courage to sing it to DF on our wedding day. Good luck!

My favorite country song of all time is Two Sparrows in a Hurricane by Tanya Tucker. It's a beautiful song, and it's about the uphill struggles and beauty of lasting love:

She's fifteen and he's barely driving a car
She's got his ring and he's got the keys to her heart
It's just matter of time
They'll spread their wings and fly

Like two sparrows in a hurricane
Trying to find their way
With a head full of dreams
And faith that can move anything
They've heard it's all uphill
But all they know is how they feel
The world says they'll never make it, love says they will

There's a baby crying and one more on the way
There's a wolf at the door with a big stack of bills
They can't pay
The clouds are dark and the wind is high
But they can see the other side

Like two sparrows in a hurricane
Trying to find their way
With a head full of dreams
And faith that can move anything
They've heard it's all uphill
But all they know is how they feel
The world says they'll never make it, love says they will

She's eighty-three and he's barely driving a car
She's got his ring and he's got the key to her heart
It's just a matter of time
They'll spread their wings and fly

Like two sparrows in a hurricane
Trying to find their way
With a head full of dreams
And faith that can move anything
They've heard it's all uphill
But all they know is how they feel
The world says they'll never make it, love says they will

I left this in your planning journal, but Michael Buble sings a lot of older songs! I think he has a few that mean so much!
Ex: 'For Once In My Life"

For once in my life
I have someone who needs me
Someone I've needed so long
For once unafraid
I can go where life leads me
And somehow I know I'll be strong
For once I can touch
What my heart used to dream of
Long before I knew
Someone warm like you
Could make my dream come true
For once in my life
I won't let sorrow hurt me
Not like it's hurt me before
For once I've got someone
I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore
For once I can say
This is mine, you can't take it
As long as I've got love
I know I can make it
For once in my life
I've got someone who needs me

I was thinking of singing this or something for my DF, but havn't decided yet! I think I'll leave it for another time, but who knows! Good luck!

DSisIL sang "When you say nothing at all" (I think that's by Allison Krauss) and it was really nice. The song seems to work well for most voices, too.

Oh thats a very sweet idea and you are oh so brave for doing..

I also love the Shania Twain "your still the one" and "from this moment" or maybe Leanne Rhymes "how do i live"

I am sure what ever you decide on will be the right choice :)

Those are some beautiful songs. THanks for the suggestions. The Rascal Flatts song is in my range. I have never heard the Tanya Tucker song but I"m going to look it up. Thanks again~! You guys are the best!!! :cool1:

I think that if blessed the broken road is the song that came in mind when you thought of walking down the isle then that should be the song. It is a beautiful song and what is most important is that it has some significance and special meaning to you! :thumbsup2
