I am trying to understand the DVC Travel Insurance program, and I just got off the phone with them, and the representative couldn't help me understand. Member Services is closed, and today is the last day I can add this points insurance to my trip. I've got about an hour before I go to bed and miss this opportunity. Help!!!

If you end up unable to go on your trip during the 30 days prior for a reason covered by the insurance (medical lets say), are your Points put into Holding (per DVC guidelines) AND you get the $5.00 per point payout (insurance coverage)? OR, do you only get the $5.00 per point payout OR the Holding?

I just am not sure the $60.00 fee is worth it. I mean, what are the chances that we will be unable to go on our trip day of? And if the $5.00 per point payout means we lose our Points, aren't allowed to put them into Holding, then that's a waste. They are worth more than $5.00 per point.

This probably isn't clear at all, but hopefully one of you out there will understand my question and be able to help me make a decision in the next hour or so. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you don't keep the holding points. Accepting the insurance forfeits the points. They aren't going to hand you the $5 per point and you can still reschedule the vacation.

I don't think you get good value for the insurance. I would only do it if you were like 50% sure you may or may not be able to go (illness in the family, etc).

If traveling is a concern (due to flight cancellations), you can either:

call the resort direct, and say your coming, to hold the room, but you are delayed,

or

pay cash for the first night somewhere, so you have a pad in case of weather.

Just my opinion,
Goldi

Also, I have had the unpleasant experience of trying to collect travel insurance for a cruise, when due to illness hubby couldn't attend. It took a lot of work on my part (with an attorney) to collect. The travel agency, who purchased this for us, said we were on our own, even though we spent like $15,000 between several family members to go on the cruse (This was Princess, not Disney, so maybe they would be better, but doubt it).

In summary, DVC only works well for people who can make their plans well in advance, and stick to them, for the most part.

thats true, you loose the points. It is a rip off. you may be able to sell the points.... I never thought it was a good deal

I would never purchase the DVC travel insurance myself. The only time I would think it would make sense for someone to get it if they were using the points right before their use year and if they canceled the trip, they would have no time to use it before they expire. So, $5 would be better than nothing.

An example would be a Thanksgiving trip using points with a Dec UY.

I purchased the insurance once and that was because we used the points for the cruise. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it.

Thanks, everyone. I decided to skip it, and I'm glad I did. Sounds like I made the right choice : )
