Need Help Lying to my Children!! :)

Lying about a relative--now THAT'S a new low ;)
I got the scratch off cards on Etsy. I don't recall the seller's name, but they were golden tickets with a big scratch of area. They were gorgeous, and still make appearances once in a while (trip was 2.5 years ago).
Ack I can't find them :( Oh well!

if you pinterest, i've seen a few pins on there for DIY versions. I think (THINK!) it uses a very thin layer of silver paint. I've seen it on there, just been a while since I've read the "how-to". You have time to make your own, if you can't find them on etsy. i'd post a link but I have no idea how to do that

I actually found the scratch off medallions on there to make your own!! So cool!

OMG YES! We are staying at POR 10/25 - 10/31 and we are doing BOG for dinner (hopefully!), O'Hana for breakfast, Boma, 50's PTD, Boatwrights, Coral Reef. My kids aren't super into characters (video game kids) but I at least want to get them to one major dining experience!
Nice!
Lilo and stitch were around when your older oneswas young so I bet he'll like Ohana. Ohana is our favorite restaurant (for dinner) but like it for Bfast too. Boma is awesome! We are trying 50's prime for the first time this next trip, I heard coral reef is awesome too. Good luck with BOG. I tried at 6am on our 180th day and couldn't get it :-(

BOOOO! Well, we are trying for the last day of our trip and dont care what time we get as long as we won't miss EP and Wishes!! Fingers crossed. We book our ADR's Monday!

We surprised our kids with 3 gifts. a santa hat, mickey ear's and picture of an airplane with their faces in it...We surprised them at the 30 day mark. (goes back to my other post, it will be a surprise no matter when you tell them) I made a paper countdown that stretched across our fireplace mantel in the Nemo blue & orange colors. It was the best 30 days!

That's actually a pretty great idea :) I'm back and forth about when I will surprise them, either day of, the night before or a week before. We shall see!

We had the ears personalized ahead of time with their names. They wore the ears at Ohare airport, everyone was commenting on them! (That was pretty fun- made our 4am flight a little bit more cheerful) Just something else to add to your trip!

Now this I am DEFINITELY doing. Thank you!

I'm one with a kid for whom a surprise wouldn't work, BUT, it seems to me that surprising them a few days prior is the best of both worlds. One, you get to surprise them and two they get the anticipation of waiting for a trip. If they don't know WHY they are getting up early then the whole waking them with disney music won't mean anything.

Also, I would imagine you would likely not get the great reaction you're hoping for in the middle of the night as opposed to when they are happily wide awake.

I can see your point absolutely. I'm really leaning towards telling them Saturday morning instead.

So I did this a few years ago, kids were 13 and 10. Told them we were going to a local water park like Cano bee Lake park or Story land - both in NH (since you said RI these are nearby) both places we had stayed a few days at before and told them it took hours to get there and we had to leave early.

Then when we got to the airport I said this plane is going to take us where we are going.

When they saw the luggage I said, we might stay a few days there.

I tried never to lie to them 'exactly' but I never gave too much details for it to not be the truth.

In order to pack for them I made iron on tshirts but pretended to be helping a friend who was going and asked kids their suggestions so I heard what characters they liked and could make/buy the ones they wanted.

Have to say there's nothing like hearing your child tell people she's going to Cano bee Lake park in NH while we are riding on the Disney magical express in FL. Let's just say they will never trust me with a road trip again!!

If you have family not in your town or state, you could wake them telling them theres an emergency, a family member needs their help. Reveal at the airport that by "family member" you meant Walt Disney himself. Pack the car the night before after they go to bed and let them stay in the PJ's. They may sleep on the way to the airport at that hour in the morning; therefore, you may want to wait until the plane to reveal when they aren't groggy.

What is going on in NYC that day? That could be the reason you have to get up so early is because you want to in in the city for something. Maybe will even sleep in the car.

My 10 and 13 year olds would have huge anxiety about missing school if I tried to surprise them. They love the planning and anticipating. I would never take that away from them. I, personally, hate surprises and I guess I passed that on.

That's too bad that your children have such high anxiety levels. Hopefully they can fight through that at some point...life is full of wonderful surprises if you are open to them.

The OP was asking for ideas on how to surprise her children, not if anyone thought it *was* a good idea. She has confirmed this more than once in her responses. Did you have any thoughts on how she can surprise her "surprise-loving" children?
