My MIL lent me a book a few months ago. It was a friend of hers, and old paperback and I didn't know she wanted it back:scared1: and I can't find it. I feel terrible and want to replace it. Problem is I can't remember the title. It was about a Catholic boy who is hired by a Jewish family to turn on their lights on the Sabbath. He falls in love with their teenage daughter and when the father finds out he sends her away. The boy becomes a priest even thugh he still loves the girl and he eventually finds her and gets her pg. It's not The Thornbirds. Anyone recognize it???

That doesn't sound familiar. Thank you though, Anyone else have any idea?

Can't you ask your MIL? Tell her you enjoyed it so much you want to but it for a friend, and can't remember the title. You might want to be out and about when you ask her so she doesn't tell you to go look at the book.

What else can you remember about the book-

What was the time period of the setting?

Was it fiction, or based on a true story?

Was the author a man or a woman? Do you recall any part of his/her name?

Was this a book you'd ever heard of before, or something pretty obscure?

Do you recall any of the character's names?

I don't remember much unfortunately. I read so many books that I get them confused. I know it was fiction. It started in probably the 70's and ended in modern day. I think the author was a woman but can't be positive. I think I had heard of her before. The girl in the book's dad was a Rabbi and he wanted his son to follow in his footsteps but the girl really wanted to study and become a Rabbi but that wasn't really encouraged. When her dad discvers that she had been alone with the Catholic boy he sends her off to Israel to live with another family. The catholic boy goes on to become a priest who is on the fast track in Rome. That's about all I can remember. My MIL can't remember the name of it either. Thanks for trying to help!

Is it "Acts of Faith" by Erich Segal?

That sounds like a probable match! Here's an overview from Amazon:

Daniel Luria is the heir apparent to the Brooklyn-based Silczer dynasty of rabbis. After Timothy Hogan (an "orphan" with two living parents) breaks the Lurias' window, Rabbi Luria hires him to turn out the lights on Sabbath nights. When the rabbi sees his daughter Deborah and Timothy poised for a forbidden embrace, he banishes Deborah to Jerusalem. Timothy, a rising star en route to Catholic priesthood, eventually encounters Deborah on her kibbutz; they consummate their relationship, despite Timothy's vows of celibacy. Meanwhile, in rabbinical school, Daniel finds doubt as well as lust in his heart; his lover leaves him, but not without some hot stock tips. A millionaire (if still unhappy), Daniel decides against religious life, to his father's profound discontent. Timothy encounters liberation theology in Brazil, has an epiphany, turns his back on Church hierarchy and acknowledges love. Daniel, who has rejoined his faith on less Orthodox terms, meets the woman of his dreams, and also finds he can follow in his father's footsteps.
