My little boy is going to be 2 at the end of the month. I really want to take him to get his pictures done but I have no clue what to dress him in!
We did a sweater in his Christmas picture with his sister who is 8 yrs old.

Seriously, when they told me I was having a boy I was so scared, as I have no clue about boys! I can dress up little girls with matching hair ties and matching panty hose and shoes, but little boys...forget it!

Should I do plain colored shirt? Rugby? One piece outfit since this will be like his last little baby pic?
DH says blue button down shirt with khakis. But to me that seems to grown up!

PM me if you would like to see their christmas pic so you can see what he looks like!

Well I know you asked for moms which I am not (I'm a Disney Dad) but for what its worth I would agree with your DH. At age two he is really not a baby anymore. My youngest DS who is now 9 has always worn khakis and button downs when dressing up. He loves them I guess since he sees thats what I wear to work most days.

When my little one turned two, I have a birthday pic of him in overalls, and one later in the fall wearing his favorite sweater with a dinosaur on it. At Christmas, we do Christmas colors, obviously. The Easter pic that year he had a light blue oxford shirt and khaki pants. So, all in all, I'd dress for the season, but let him show a little personality. Does he have a favorite outfit?

If you are still dressing him in the one piece outfits yup .. id go for that!
Blue button down and pants is way to big boy for me. I didnt start that until 2.5 ish.. I still thought of him as a baby at 2 lol.

Also if the xmas pics were dressy.. what about just blue jeans and a polo for this pic, something more casual.

I am a huge fan of a nice Ralph Lauren button front shirt and khakis. I think my son wore some variation of that outfit for every pic growing up!

I have a DD(17) DS(11) and DS(7) I have always cordinated their outfits but color usually, example for Christmas picture was grey and black this year. Example daughter wore pretty gray sweater and black dress pants, sons wore button down with bigger boy wide grey & black stripes and younger boy thin stripes. And yes I and both boys are a big fan of the khacki and button down look! Its easy can be worn again and is comfortable! Now good luck on getting them to look with a pleasant expression at the camera! We have several candids that I love. One has two sons looking at big sister laughing - so cute!

I dressed my boys (years and years ago) for their Easter picture in short sleeve shirts with a matching vest. There little dress pants matched the vest and shirt. I used to get their outfits at Babies R Us, back in the day. Now if you don't want to buy anything, I would just go with something nice that he would wear to church or a wedding. For their daycare pictures, I did have them wear jean overalls and they looked cute. I guess it just depends on what look you are going for.

I have three boys and I love dressing them...much easier! I had pictures of all my little boys wearing white tee shirt and denim overalls....sometimes with a baseball cap, other times not. My oldest son always wore baseball caps, so I did some pics with it so that I could always remember that stage.

Hi! I have an almost 2 year old boy too! I will be taking him for pictures on Saturday!

I am choosing to dress him in jeans a turtleneck and sweater. We've previously had his pictures in a dress shirt and vest. That was cute too. It is hard with boys but I think when they look like little men it's cute!

Oh yeah the turtle neck idea is cute! We did a t-neck and jeans with bare feet pic once! of course the then little girlie had to have her bows in so she didnt look the same as her brother!! Now she is 17! Hah!! Those were the days, now I worry about her driving, boyfriends and worse! But lucky she is a good kid, I credit that to her Disney upbringing!

I'm another Mom who dressed her DS in light blue polo and khaki pants.....here's a pic of him at 2 :)

and here he is at 1 year....I think you could still dress him in a romper like this at 2 though. :)

I have always brought two outfits for my boys. One dressy, and one casual. I actually prefer the casual, but some relatives like a formal picture. I think the cutest one I have is with them laying on their backs with their arms under their head. Like they are just relaxing. It is a close up so just the top of the shirt shows. They are wearing hawaiian shirts. I wish I knew how to post pictures here.

OK, I may be a little different from everyone here, but I always dress my boys very casual, rugged, and tough. I love dressing them and showing their personality. I use clothes and props that show what they were into at that time - to me it shows a bit of a storyline. Both of my boys are very into Hot Rods. My favorite picture is of my oldest when he was about 2. He was in carpenter jeans and a hot rod T-shirt with flames and a small car on it. He had tools in his pockets and hands and we took his black metal petal car - complete with flames - with us. He was so happy to do that picture and pretend to work on his car that the picture came out great! And, as I said, it really shows what his personality was like at that age. My youngest will be 2 in February and we'll probably have hot rods in that picture too as he doesn't go anywhere without a car in his hand and he LOVES going to car shows. His 1st birthday picture was done in a WDW shirt and he was surrounded by Mickey Mouse toys. I think it makes it more fun for them too and we always get a great smile because they enjoy being around the stuff they love.

I personally couldn't put my boys in dressy clothes for a picture. They would look so out of place and not like themselves to me because their personalities are so tough and rugged. In their first picture together, they are both in Raven's Jerseys with a football and football helmet next to them. However, I have a friend who's son is always in dressier clothes (khaki's and button down shirts). He would probably look out of place in my boy's clothes, so it's really a style preference.

How do you dress your son on a daily basis? I guess what I'm trying to say is don't stray too far from that. You want him to look like himself and let his personality shine through.

What does your son normally wear for special occasions or even church? In the South we have a tendency to dress our little fellers up in shortalls, long white socks and white shoes. Both of my sons wore shortalls and barefeet for their 2 year old pictures and they are treasured memories for me. My youngest is 4 and he still hasn't worn khakis and a tucked in shirt yet, but rather two piece custom made outfits that are not babish in anyway, but still age appropriate. I also love their summer pictures with just overalls and no shirts! You can't go wrong because you know what you like and what their personalities are all about!

loved overalls when they were little.

Khaki's and a polo shirt are what we do almost always he was a bit bigger.. so I would do another year in a romper or use overalls.

Usually they already have some outfit that I just always think they look cute in. I would rather do that then go get something new just for pix. We have his 3rd year photo in a train sweater that he had to have when he saw it at the store. Probably not his nicest piece of clothing, but he loved it and it brings back lots of memories.

Have fun!

I think that kids will be able to wear khakis and polos for the rest of their lives...however, you can only get away with one-pieces and overalls and such for a certain amount of time ;). So I would definitely go with overalls and a cute shirt underneath.

They're only little once!

Another southerner here -

I had formal pictures done last year just after Christmas and just before he turned 4.

One set of pictures was in a linen shortall from Easter with white socks and white shoes. I would highly recommend getting at least one more picture of him in his one-piece outfits as he will be wearing the other stuff the rest of his life. I definitely do not think 2 is too old for those kinds of dress clothes.

The other set was in grey trousers, a white shirt, navy teddy bear tie and a navy velvet sport coat. This is similar to his usual church outfit for cooler weather.

To each their own, but I have a ton of really good candids in casual clothing and would rather dress him up for picture sittings. However there is no reason you can't take multiple outfits so you have a range of photos.

When my boys were little I loved Picture People. They are so good about working in props, and they have a bazillion colors of backgrounds.

When my younger son turned 3 I bought him a Kansas City Royals outfit...shorts, t-shirt, and vest. You know, the kind of vest some MLB teams wear on Sundays? I took along his bat, glove, and a ball. They did the pictures of a blue background...he's standing up throwing the ball into the glove and the bat is by his feet. That is still one of my favorite portraits ever!

I almost always take my own props and pick the outfits around them. When my older son turned 2 he took his Woody doll everywhere, so I put him in a brown sweater and bluejeans...the sweater so that the doll would show up against it. I also took wooden blocks to spell out his name. The pictures are darling.

Another thing I've done is match the outfit to the theme of the birthday party. Both my boys had Winnie the Pooh first birthday parties, so both of them had their first birthday pictures done in Pooh overalls (not the same outfit...)

The whole khakis and white polo shirt thing is so overdone that I've never considered it for my kids. I say find an outfit that is representative of your son's interests. It makes the pictures that much more personal.

You're going to think this is nuts, but it was the cutest phot I had ever seen. A gf of mine had a little boy after 5 darling girls and she enjoyed every second of his "boyness". So, once he got older and she ran out of cutesie ideas, she decided what the heck.... walked into her photo shoot with him covered in mud and a pair of cut off blue jean shorts and a couple of his dirty old tonka trucks. They were the cutest pics ever and the photographer had the best time with him. She even made it part of her out door them from then on. Calls it the "Dillon" package! I know it's too cold for something like that now, but some times going simple and spontanious is better than all dressed up. Just an idea.

Well, I am a Southerner too, but I don't have any pics of my son in dressy clothes. We don't dress like that normally, so my son just wouldn't look like himself.

My son's pictures this year were made in a cowboy shirt, hat, and jeans. Why? Because this is what he is into. They turned out awesome. We have had pics in overalls, polo and jeans, tee shirts and shorts, and even a couple of Halloween costumes. We have the baseball outfits too, both Cincinnati Reds (DH hometown), and Florida Marlins.

We do have a picture of him taken every year (in late Dec, early Jan) in one of my DH's old blue oxford cloth shirts. We started this on his first birthday, so we have 6 of them now. His 5 year old picture was the first one where the shirt didn't touch the floor. My little boy is growing up!

We really like the Picture People too, we have gotten really good pics at several different locations.
