My technologically advanced DC made a copy for me of a very old VHS that is no longer available in any format (he burned it onto DVD+R using a Mac). The problem is that I didn't realize that my DH wants five more copies of it, if possible, for gifts. My Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop has Windows DVD Maker and I have Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0, if that helps any. I'm supposed to get these done in the next ten days, and feel overwhelmed, help!

(I KNOW about copyright issues ((and believe me, I've searched the internet for YEARS looking for this)), so please let's not go there.)

TIA!
Terri

What format is the file in? (Or is there more than one file?) Use Windows Explorer to look at what the full filename is, extension and all. Once you know that, you will probably be in a better position to learn how to convert it.

You may have to purchase software to do it; it can be tricky dealing with MAC-generated media files on a PC.

I knew you'd know, NotUrsula, even if it's not good news :)

I don't know if this is what you mean or not, but they're VTS_01_(numbers 1-5).VOB and under each it says the file size and "VOB file".

I may have to send it back to him and ask him to burn more :(

Thanks!
Terri

you can get a free trial of nero to burn the video_ts files without a problem.

These are also free:

I've always used dvd shrink or dvd decrypter to rip the image to my pc and I use nero to burn it. If you have nero on your pc, dvd shrink will burn it also.

I should have these as files somewhere around here, they can be tricky to find. If you need them let me know.

Dawson is right; if they are already VOB, all you should have to do is transfer them and burn them onto the new media; you should not have to convert them first.

However, before you give the disks to anyone, try to play them on a standard player yourself, because depending on the encryption, sometimes the audio can get lost when you copy the files.

there are .IFO, .BUP, and .VOB files right? This is standard for video files.

If you can just get dvd decrypter, you can rip them in ISO and it will read (rip) and write it. As long as it's not encrypted, I would think it wouldn't take more than 15 minutes to read & write. Saving the file to you pc will make writing that much quicker. I would suggest slowing down the write speed if possible to make sure the burn is deeper and less chance of read errors or disc deterioration.

Well, I just downloaded the free Nero trial. That took awhile! Onward and upward...

Thanks again!

Terri

Nero will allow you to burn but not to rip. You'll still need one of the other programs to get the files from the dvd to your pc.

I don't know, I'm pretty ignorant in this area, but when I opened Nero, it said something along the line of "put in disk to be copied" so I did (waited patiently;)), then it kicked it out and said "waiting for disk to be copied to", so I put in a blank disk and am waiting patiently again. In about five minutes I should be able to check both and see if it worked....

is this a new version? I think I'm on 8. I know it doesn't on that. That would be nice if they finally did that, I hate having all kinds of programs on here. I hope so, that seriously would be nice. Might upgrade if they did that.

If it doesn't work and you need one of the others, let me know but in the a.m.. I am heading to bed.

Seriously though, turn down the burn speed. It'll burn as fast as the dvd will allow, which is nice if you don't care. I am a firm believer in slower speeds while burning and nothing else going on, I dont even surf when I'm burning.

Goodnight Dawson5 and thank you so much, IT WORKED!!!!!:banana:

Now I have to dash out tomorrow a.m. and buy some more blank CD-Rs....

Terri

PS Yes, it's version 9

ah cool. I'll be reading up on the new version later.

As for cd's & dvd's, check:

www.salescircular.com

and you select the state. You can find media on there and see who has what on sale and for how much.

Now I gotta ask, what's the old show that he transferred? My friend found the Banana Splits for me, transferred to digital for me and sent for my birthday. I got the biggest kick out of that. I have never seen it for sale before, locally at least.
