Since it's for a formal living room I'd go with #3.

I agree :)

I think #1 wouldn't fit at all with what you were describing. Plus, it looks more like an informal family room couch than anything. #2 looks small and way too modern. #3 is sleek and kind of retro looking to me.

I think that #3 goes more with the room you are describing.

Couch number 1 looks the most comfortable to me.

If it's a formal room go with #3. I hate # 2 & #1 you need to buy a slip cover right? I hate the slipcovers.

I sold fruniture for 14 years. If its a formal room not used often you can go with pretty that is not made well. Alway sink your money into a good piece that gets alot of use...the family room. People tend to think backwards on this.

I´d go with nr. 1. No doubt. Love IKEA, know this couch and it´s both comfy and good looking. Would definately go with a Pottery Barn look.

Definitely #1. My couch looks a lot like that in style, but it sure wasn't $400.
I like traditionally shaped upholstery, which means I dislike #3 a lot and am not wild about #2.

I like tradtional too...but this is for a small room, and the big thick comfortable looking arms of most couches just won't fit!

These three are all small on purpose.

I don't mind, because no one will be laying on it. That is what our big giant soft family room sofa is for!!

Another thing to think about is that if you are trying to make a room look larger having a skirted couch is not going to help much no matter what size it is. Having the open space under the couch will add size to the room.
