I have to give a talk about Suppliers and Consumers and how sometimes a Supplier/producers makes a good product but the public doesn't buy it.

I'm thinking something along the lines of New Coke but the audience will be mostly 20 somethings who may not understand how big of a disaster that was.

Any ideas

Thanks alot :)

How can something be a good product if it flops

the delorean? Although 20-somethings generally aren't too familiar with it unless they have seen back to the future.

Or Zune by microsoft?

Read about the Ford Edsel.

Also the Chrysler Pacifica

mcDonald's Arch Deluxe

Smokeless Cigarettes

New Coke is a good idea, and there are others in the soft drink industry. Like Pepsi Crystal

Microsoft WebTV

Cosmo Magazine's Yogurt flop

The Apple Newton

One of the biggest flops of all time: Betamax

The Delorean was never a quality car and had many faults.

DVD-HD? Though I don't know much about it...did it flop for any reason other than it was competing against Blu-Ray and only one format could really succeed?

There were many products that had to do a renaming, rebranding or just elimination out of the market.

I am thinking of a diet pill that I remember from the 70's and 80's. This product had to do a renaming due to a public health crisis

I seem to remember hearing about a scandal in the late 60's and early 70's regarding a brand of dog food (Kal Kan maybe?)- the company had to totally rebrand its name and image due to a challenging circumstance.

Did you Google biggest product failures and find the list on daily finance too?

Zune might be a good idea. It was a decent product but they couldn't overcome the popularity of IPods, which is another reason a good product may flop.

First thing I thought of. And really not completely a flop as it was an extremely popular product for several years (and superior to VHS), but lost out long term by virtue of holding onto the patent too long. By the time Sony allowed other brands to build on their platform, VHS had already moved into the lead and video rental stores had converted most of their inventory to VHS tapes.

I remember reading in a college marketing class about a big "oops" Chevrolet made back in the 60s/70s. Seems that no one anticipated that the very successful Nova line would flop in Latin American markets, due to the very name of the car.

No va = does not go, in Spanish.

Turns out, it was just an urban legend. But it makes a great story!

Ipod U2 Special Edition...

Powermac G4 Cube

The Arch Deluxe, McDonald's attempt at the "adult palate".

Cocaine
Redux Beverages

Laser Discs

I loved that U2 Ipod. I wanted one in the worst way.

I will say that the Ipod Photo was never a big seller. I actually bought one thinking that I would use it as photo storage but it was too clunky and slow.
