Need encouragement for summer heat!

After reading the title, the smart aleck in me wants to post, "Yes, I can encourage you that it will definitely be hot in the summer!" :)

We've been in both June and August and it's HOT. And HUMID. But it's mostly HOT and HUMID at the same time.

That said, if you're prepare, drink lots, take your breaks, don't push too hard, drink some more, you'll be fine. I'm not a huge fan of the heat, and I sweat like a race horse, but I don't ever recall the heat ruining my trip or even bothering me that much.

One tip I found out this year, a couple of layers do well. It may sound backwards, but you're in effect insulating yourself from the heat (rather than from the cold). I wore two t-shirts every day last Aug and was WAY more comfortable than I ever was in just one t-shirt or even shirtless.

Since your son is entering kindergarten, you could consider taking him out of school in September/Oct. It is kindergarten - What he gets from Disney will be more than what he gets that week in school. The crowds will be low and the weather may be a tad cooler and it's a really great time to visit the water parks.

We would do that but I really wanted to be there over his birthday which is 7/29... The only reason I am considering this time of year. I want this birthday to be special! Now when my youngest turns 5 for his special birthday it will be in December so we are OK there! :)

I teach K and it is not all fun and games. Yes it is the most playful of all grades but there is quite a bit of learning going on. It is not all playing with blocks, puzzles and coloring. We aren't allowed to let the kids have naptime! The first month of school is so hard on the little guys. This is the month when they learn rules, procedures, adjust to school (somewhat) and build that classroom community. I had a kid pulled after the second week to take a trip and he was so confused and lost when he got back. It was really stressful on the little guy.

You have gotten all the best advice - But it can not be said too often - stay hydrated!

Other than having to have a water bottle with you at all times it is do-able the park hours are longer and they are prepared for crowds. Bonus - Some of the attractions that are not open during slow periods are open and available - Timekeeper comes to mind but that's gone now.

Just have a list of must-dos for each day and go from there.

Happy Planning

I had to read your post carefully to make sure I hadn't written it after reading the "preview" that came up when I scrolled over it! We're also going around the same time (July 28 - August 11) and are also going for my son's birthday, but he'll be turning 14! He particularly (my other 2 will be 15 and 12) doesn't do well in the heat. We're staying offsite in a house with its own pool, and since we'll be there so long, plan on hitting the parks from opening until about 1 daily, then just relaxing at the house, pool, gameroom, etc. Maybe some golf and waterparks if it's not storming, but only back into the parks in the evening to see maybe Fantasmic (if we can stay up that long) and Spectromagic.

If you'd like to PM me, I'd be glad to chat with you some more once this thread dies away to have someone to talk to about making plans etc. for the same time. I appreciate all the advice from others and already have the neck wraps and fanny packs with built in water bottles. Good luck!

Buy the mister fans before you get there, wear hats, wear plenty of sunscreen and DRINK, DRINK DRINK water. I live in FL now and I can tell you, I have never thought the afternoon storms did anything but make it MORE muggy and miserable. Also, as another poster said, it is hurricane season also. We came from IL, which often easily hits 100 degrees, but the heat here just envelops you and penetrates you and I find it very hard to cool off. Also, Orlando does not have any of the coastal ocean cooling. If your kids don't do well in the heat, maybe the crowds of Christmas would be better.

We go this time of year every year. The weather really isn't that much different than a hot humid Ohio summer, and I'd rather be there than here! Besides the air conditioning is much better LOL!
