Need Camera Recommendation

We have a Nikon that takes great photos, but DH is so frustrated with it because it takes a while to "start up" when you turn it on, then takes too long between photos.

We need one with some zoom capability, pretty compact (doesn't have to be ultra-tiny), and very fast turn on/photo advance.

Any ideas? We leave for WDW in less than a month and I don't want another week of frustrations with our camera...TIA!

Under Just for Fun there is a photography board where I'm sure you'd get lots of recommendations. Also, have you looked on Cnet.com? I always research my new purchases there and have found it to be a helpful site. Slow start up and slow speeds between shots is unfortunately something that is a problem with a lot digital cameras. Hopefully you find something that works better for you!

Thanks, I did check out cnet and some of their reviews matched the ones at BestBuy. I think we will need to actually try a bunch out, including some with good reviews, because if we end up with another "slow" camera my DH is going to go crazy! I would still like some personal recommenations. TIA!

All I can say is stay far, far away from the Canon Powershot SX100..... it STINKS!!!!

I have the Nikon D50 (DSLR) that I love, love, love... but needed something in a point and shoot for the times it's inconvenient to lug the big camera around. I had a Kodak Easyshare that was 5 yrs old and took great pics. I decided to get something with more "bells and whistles" and more technologically advanced since it has been 5 yrs and my Kodak was only a 4megapixel...

I researched and researched. The Canon SX100 was getting great reviews on Best Buy.com and Circuit City.com.... also numerous other sites online.

I bought it 6 weeks ago and it's the worst camera ever!!! I've messed with the settings to try to rectify the problems I'm having with no avail. Any "action" shot even in the action setting mode comes out blurry... can't successfully capture any movement or macro shots even w/the macro setting. I turned off the digital zoom and just used optical in order to attempt clearer distance shots-no luck

I wish I'd gone with my 2nd choice... the Fuji Finepix... live and learn I guess....

My D50 is definitely going to WDW with me next week

We've been pretty happy with our Kodak Easyshare. We bought it back in 2004 and it's served us very well. We now use a Canon digital SLR that I absolutely love! We have Canon SLR cameras so we went with that one so that we can use the lenses we already had. Absolutely no complaints with either camera.

Oooh, pick me!!

We had a Kodak Easyshare with a whopping 3.1MP and it finally croaked!! It was over 5 years old!!

So.... we just bought the Fuji Finepix f50 (or something) and its sooo awesome! Its so fast and easy! There are enough features that you can get some really amazing shots, AND its super easy to find them quickly. The battery life is AWESOME (I bought mine on Saturday and just recharged the battery today, and I have taken a zillion photos!) and its rechargeable. The LCD screen is huge, although I am used to using the viewfinder on my easyshare, I don't really miss it on the Fuji.

Its super small and light and comfortable to use. It has a longer warranty than most others (3 years), at least here in Canada.

The best thing is the cutest little noise it makes when it turns on.

Try LUMINEX - it's a panasonic. Generally overlooked because of the name,but AMAZING photos!!!!! And best of all not outragously expensive.

I'm using a Sony Cybershot DSCW80 right now- I absolutely love it. It's not ultra thin, but still very light weight. It's got some amazing low-light settings- I loved those when I was shooting motion shots of some dance numbers a few months ago. It's very portable, and takes awesome pictures. I'm not sure if they're discontinued or not (it kind of looks like they are) but they are so totally worth it.

I LOVE my Canon SD1100 IS. Starts up VERY fast, takes great pics, easy to use, small enough to fit in a pocket. It was so easy to take over 500 pics last trip because it's effortless. Just point and shoot. Didn't really have to worry about memory card space (2GB held 500 pics with plenty of room to spare), battery life (1.5-2 days per charge, using it all day long). Image stabilization is terrific. Try it out at a local store. It goes for about $249 retail, but you can find it cheaper online (after you try it out in a store). HTH

A digital SLR is extremely fast and can take a burst of consecutive shots. I love mine (Nikon D70), the battery is good for about 1,400 pictures and there is no delay between pictures, the focus is lightning quick.

Some of the compact cameras are much faster than they were 10 years ago. I would strongly suggest trying them at a camera store before you buy.

While I adore my Sony Alpha 100 DSLR we recently purchased a sony Cybershot we love it. Takes great pictures very little lag time between photos

We just got an Olympus Stylus 1010. We had a Stylus before like 4 MP. So we were due for an upgrade. '

I love this new camera. 10 mp & great zoom, plus tons of features that seem to be pretty easy to get to - can't wait to test the fireworks mode in WDW in Sept.

I love that it has a rechargable battery, that was a requirement for me. I never had a problem with the last one either. Never ran out of juice - just recharge it every night you are on vacation. Would hate to have to carry extra AA batteries.

Its super slim & lightweight.

You're going to get a ton of recammendations... We bought the orig. one because the guy at Best Buy told us it was great...he was right. Now I am a devoted Olympus fan. And I did do a ton of homework before getting the 1010. I couldn't go with the point & shoot Nikons or such because of the battery issue.
