Need book recommendations for DS11

With the new school year coming, I'd love and appreciate some suggestions for great books for my ds11. He has dyslexia, so books need to be probably in the age bracket for an 8-10 year old. He prefers non-fiction, interests include science, asian cultures, martial arts. He might be open to some science fiction. He's a quirky kid, with Asperger's and multiple learning and behavior challenges. Has no interest in sports whatsoever.

The Amulet series of graphic novels (first one here) is one I'd try.

They're only a 2.0 to 2.5 on Accelerated Reader, but are a Middle Grade interest level, and I've seen good reviews from friends who had both very strong readers and very weak readers.

Are the Magic Tree House books too easy? My kids loved those. They are a good mix of non-fiction/fiction. DS18 loved the Star Wars books too. They have a bunch of different levels of the series if he would be open to those. If you look in the library there is a series of biographies on people-I can't remember who published them but they all have basically the same cover type deal. How about books on the Presidents? We have a series of those from when Dh was young (the last one in the series is President Kennedy).

I a little hesitant to recommend books because peoples taste very (and do you really want to tell someone your guilty pleasures) but I would suggest the Percy Jackson series. They have a younger hero, humor, and a possible launching point to reading non fiction on Greek Myths, sword fighting, etc.

do a google search for high-low readers, they're books that are designed to be high interest for older kids, but written on a lower academic grade level. A lot of different series are published by High Noon. They have both fiction and non-fiction, plus the classics. You can see which ones would match your ds's interests and reading level.

DS9 and I just read The Invention of Hugo Cabret. It was a great book with great illustrations. It looks like a huge book (550 pages) but probably half of it is pictures that correlate with the story. Very good book!
