We are looking to take our kids (14&12) to Disney. We have never stayed on Disney property and we would like to have 2 bedrooms. I am not sure if it is cost effective to rent the points or not stay on property. My kids want to do the RoR and I hear it is difficult if to do if you don't stay on property. Thanks

You can pretty quickly do some price checks on Disney’s website to see the cost of two hotel rooms, family suites, campground cabins etc… Check out the prices for when you want to go, then check out the rental prices for those same time periods. Keep in mind if you are looking for a reservation <7 months away it can be very difficult to rent a DVC reservation.

Renting two studios will be significantly cheaper than renting a two bedroom, so you can also consider that. All options will be more than you could pay offsite.

Oddly enough when we did RoR in April, we didn't use any special privileges. We just got in line after an early dinner and our wait was about 90 minutes.

Before we did DVC we paid cash for a cabin at Fort Wilderness. We enjoyed that, although it doesn't have a washer and dryer FYI.

I don't think it's cost effective to do it (get 2 bedrooms on Disney Property if the only thing you want to do is RoTR.

It will be very expensive to get a 2 bedroom villa. Even if renting points. For 4 people (especially since 2 of them are kids) I’d just get a studio or regular hotel room. Would be soooo much cheaper. And if you have to, just wait in line for RoR. Would be worth it to save that much $

The family suites at value resorts, such as Art of Animation and All Star Music, can be a better deal than many 2 bedrooms! of course they are slightly less fancy, but the quality is still great!

The problem w/ the 2 studio option is that they typically do not connect to each other & even when they do (Poly & VGF BPK building) DVC will not guarantee that you’ll be assigned connecting studios, although Poly seems to usually assign connecting studios when requested.
Typically renting points for a DVC studio is cheaper than paying for a cash room at a Disney Deluxe resort, but once you start looking at 1 & 2 bedroom villas the cost shoots up. The suites at the values are a good option - especially AOA w/ it’s easy access to DHS via the Skyliner.
Staying offsite will offer more spacious accommodations at a lower price - Orlando is awash in timeshare accommodations.
I’d consider taking the money saved by staying offsite or in an AOA suite & using it to buy individual LL to guarantee riding ROTR.

We considered staying off site, but were glad we didn't.The early park entry and transportation were definitely worth it,going and leaving the parks. We didn't buy any genie and lightning lanes and didn't see any need for them.Last Monday morning ,we walked on Pirates, then 5 minutes for Big thunder and another 5 minute wait for Haunted Mansion.

As luck had it, the week you came was VERY slow. Historical slow

Sorry to disagree, but it's been mentioned before and trying to book a room onsite was almost impossible through dvc.We booked moderate for the first time.IMO,you couldn't be more wrong and I believe it was because of the early hours for resort guests.Downtown disney was busier than we've ever seen on Sunday the 4th,as the cashiers at the christmas stores mentioned as well. The funny thing we noticed was The wait for Peter pan was 85 minutes, lol,so we jumped on IASWA.

DVC runs at almost full capacity all the time, no matter how busy the parks are.
Again,I have to disagree. For the most part,in all my years going to disney we've booked through dvc,studios,1 bedrooms ,2 bedrooms, and have never had a problem booking where we wanted for the length we wanted. Not this time.

How flexible are you plans? I'm not expert at WDW DVC, but I did have really good luck booking a reservation through the boards sponsor for a somewhat last minute trip to WDW in July for the 4th. It seems like when they get to within a month of the date many renters on the site lower the price per point down quite a bit and the value was WAY better than trying to book something for cash from Disney direct at a similar resort. We stayed at SSR and had a great time. We did have to shift our travel dates by 1 day to align with the already booked confirmed reservation, but it worked for us and flights were not as bad as I would have expected given we only booked 2 weeks out.

Would the smaller twin pull out bed work for one of the kids? I know they are older, but if one is of a smaller build might give you more options. For my family of 4 we will stay in studios and 1BR units when we have to, but we prefer the 2BR villas for the space, bathrooms, and having the living room area kept clear from sleeping people when we can :)

Are you an owner? Or did you rent reservations via a DVC owner?

rented via owners.

Renters have the ability to find the owners who own points at the resorts one wants to stay and could play a big role in getting what you want as often as you do, especially if one is using a broker. Owners are limited to booking just their home resort until 7 months out when they can book other things.

For example, I own RIV, SSR, and VGF. I am not going to get BCV or BWV during the fall easily because I don't own at those resorts, and by 7 months, those resorts are booked up. I might get a night here or there, but certainly not going to be able to secure things like someone who owns at those two resorts were able to do during the home resort booking.

Now a renter might be able to secure something much easier by simply finding an owner who owns there and books for them.
So, it really is different for a renter vs. an owner in terms of getting reservations during very busy times.
