my question is want to be going every 2 years or so but we are a
family of 6 so we need a larger room then the norm, is it worth it to buy say
50 points resale and then either borrow points from the next year or bank them to use 100 points to stay for 5 days every 2 years? I am thinking that 50 points is all I have in the budget right now, and then I can add more later if needed...
what is your opinion on this? we are going to be borrowing points for our trip in December 2006 and stay at OKW for 5 days and the cabins for the other 2 days but it will cost nearly 1200 @ $11 a pont that was offered to me.. (110 points) seems worthwile to do the DVC myself, but I am not sure if it is a great idea or not..
opinions please!

Remember this is my opinion, and mine alone!

I would not buy at this time if 50 pts is all you can afford. The closing costs alone will not be worth it!

If you do not go at least every two years, not worth it either.

Can you not put that 1200 towards points? Disney will finance for you or you can get a line of credit.

With six you would need a minimum for a two bedroom. As I don't have my stuff here at work, can't tell you what that is. So you would figure what the point value is and then half it to purchase the minimum but Disney's is 150 pts.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you asked.

I appreciate the opinion! We try to do everything in cash alone.. no credit here.. we had some issues with credit a few years back and we do not use cards at all, so the payments are not going to work for me.
I think you are right on the every two years thing not working out, I just know if we had more points I would be temped to go each year and I know that is out of my budget.
To stay at OKW 2 bedroom in early December is 110 points for 5 days, you are saying to half that is 55 points? I know that to buy from Disney is 150 points min, but they also charge what $85 a point right?
Resale is cheaper than that, but there is closing costs there that Disney does not do.
I am really flip flopping on what is the best option here. I do appreciate you taking the time to give your opinion.

Disney says they pay the closing costs, but it is reflected into the total cost.

Good Luck with whatever you decide.

If you're comfortable with the closing costs adding to the cost/point of your resale...then sure:) As Scratch pointed out, an OKW resale that is $75/point is going to have another $400+approx in closing costs added on to it...

But...if you know that DVC would work for your family, I think a small resale is a good way to go. Remember too, you'll have maintenance fees due every January as well...about $200USD or so, for OKW 50 points

DVC is a wonderful way to vacation:) You would need a minimum of 110 points for a 5night Adventure season stay in a 2bedroom...so, with a 50 point membership, you would need to borrow all your points from your next year, plus rent/transfer another 10 points into your account to cover it.

Good luck with your decision...and let us know:)
