Need advice on buying or renting

DH and I are having our vow renewal, next year at Disney  . We inquired about renting points to cover the time for our renewal and to makeup for the honeymoon we never had- we will need 966 points. It has been suggested that if we need that many rented points then we should just buy into DVC and resale (of course, if we buy it we will keep it because we vacation at Disney about 4 times a year). It just seems that, eventhough, we could buy a resale for about $13K -$15K but there aren't enough points available to cover all nights, plus it seems much more expen$ive to purchase the additional points at about $89 per point to cover. It seems more cost effective to to rent the points from a current dvc member; Or am I missing the huge savings in his suggestion or what? :confused3

The biggest problem will be getting a single member with the number of points you need. I don't know what you plan to rent, but if it is a specific location or one of the GVs, you probably need a member with points at that resort. That makes it tougher.

So if you are planning on going multiple times a year, you probably should consider buying into DVC. Then bank current year points and borrow the following year points to maybe get enough for your trip. Otherwise you may need to have points transferred to your account from other members (similar to renting, but you control the points). Then you don't have to worry about renting from one single member.

To the OP: Since you travel often to WDW, you should start by totaling up all of the hotel costs you have spent at WDW over the past few years. Include tax but not tickets, food etc. From this, try to get an idea of how much you usually spent per year and how much per night.

While you are looking at your past visits, you should also look at how many Fri & Sat nights you typically stay. As you know, DVC rooms are more expensive on these nights than on Sun-Th.

With one big blowout of a trip planned for 966 points and a pattern of visiting WDW, I agree that buying some or all of the points you need may make sense. We did exactly that last year. We were going to spend about $4000 on a single trip and instead spent about $15000 for a membership. Now for the cost of the annual dues, we get the room for another trip each year.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

The "huge" savings come when you resell the stripped contract.

Just remember that if you buy resale it will be two - three months until you can make a reservation. We have bought 5 resales in the past year.

Thanks to everyone that posted. It really does seem like buying is, more than likely, the way for us to go. We, usually, stay weekends and sometimes we travel during the holiday season. Your answers have very helpful :sunny:

He only had $20,000 left after those large MFs. Not sure could afford $20 loan, plus the points were probably originally purchased for $60 per point? ;)

Good for you! I got a chuckle over at the rent/trade board when someone was offering to rent his points for only $9.75 for 150 points and got a reply from someone asking if he could get a discount if they rented all whopping 150 of them! I couldn't resist posting that the owner was getting what he deserved by lowballing his price.

Holy buckets. So are you one of those people who are accumulating points so you can basically retire at WDW? If you don't mind me asking....

Edited to say that I forgot to add my .02 about the OP's question. If you're going to WDW four times a year and staying in deluxes (or even moderates), why not buy into DVC? Even with dues added, it sure seems like you'd come out ahead.
