I have the canon sd450. Love it but it is ready to go.
So here are the choices I am looking at to replace it...

( all canon )

sd 850
sd 870
sd 950

Is there really a huge difference in having an 8.1 vs 12 megapixel? That would be one of the major differences between the 950 and the other two I listed. Also how important is having the wide angle lense?

Thanks for any input...try to make a decision so we can play with it before our upcoming trip!

That's funny I also have the Canon SD450 and want to upgrade. At first I thought I wanted another point and shoot, but the more time I spend here, I want something better. I used to own a Nikon film camera with the huge zoom lens back in the 80's-90's and it died in 2000, I miss the quality that camera had. I was considering the Canon SD850, but now I just don't know.

The reason I am sticking with one of the sd's is the price and size. I don't want to lug around the bigger ones!

I would have to say it would probably be difficult to see any difference except for your hard drive filling up faster.

I am not sure on these models, but typical wisdom says that the higher MP model will have more image noise by trying to pack so many MPs on such a small sensor.

BTW, what is your motivation for an upgrade? Is the old one on its last leg? Is performance too slow? Is video mode not enough? Etc? I just want to make sure that MP chasing is not the motivation b/c you might be disappointed and actually could see a decrease in image quality. Between 5-7 MPs seems to be the sweet spot where you can increase the MPs without damaging the quality too much.

Thank you! That is exactly why I came here to ask! To answer your question...yes my old one is okay but we are having a ton of problems being able to keep the battery charged. We have had it for about 3 1/2 years and just wanted to upgrade.
So if I were choosing between the 7.1 and the 8 mp would you lean more towards the 7? I did not think about the logic of trying to pack in so many MPs! Thank you for your reply!

4forDisneyworld,

If you end up buying a new Canon SD will you post back about it? I'm not planning to buy a new camera until next month. Since we have the same camera now, I'll be curious to see if you notice a big difference. I'm lucky that my SD450 still holds a charge pretty well, I got mine in June of 2006, so maybe that's why. I can't believe my camera model was already a couple of years old when I bought it. ;)
