NEED ADVICE DH company moving to Maine do we go?

Honestly, I would have your DH take the job, but be looking for something else. Don't move. He can do the commute for 3 - 6 months. If all looks stable, then you can move to ME. If not, then you at least got an extra 3 - 6 months of salary and a head start on the job search. Again, I would not rush to move, but also wouldn't turn down a paying job in this market. I commute and hour either way now--while it's not fun, it's doable.

you hit the nail on the head
this is DH fear that we will move and then someothing will happen and he own have a job, he was saying today if we dont it he wants to move somewhere like Exeter or a place near 95 so he could commute back towards MA. I have redone his resume today and started looking for stuff around here. I think we only want to move if we have to meaning if he cant find anything around here. Thanks for your response Barkley it was great.

Hi there, just checking in because I'm also a lifer to the seacoast of NH :wave2:
I really don't have a ton of advice on the whole job issue, but I do currently live in Exeter, grew up in Hampton, so I know the seacoast/95 area like the back of my hand. Housing costs are nuts, but if you're from Burlington, it won't be too much of a shock to you. I'm not sure how large your family is, or how big of a home you'd be interested in...but you mentioned Hampton Falls in one of your earlier posts, and a nice 3/4-bedroom home in Hampton Falls would be close to a half million (on the lower end). Hampton, Exeter and Stratham aren't far behind either.
Kittery is a great town, my DH actually grew up in Eliot, the next town over. He would LOVE to move back there since we have a little one on the way, swears it's the best place for kids to grow up. Someone already mentioned Berwick Academy, which is K-12, I believe, and located in South Berwick, maybe 15 mins from Kittery.
The public schools in the Hampton/Exeter area are really good, I can tell you that first hand! Of course, there's Phillips, but it looks that your son (6?) is a bit young to be thinking of high school yet!

Anyway, I've rambled, but I LOVE the seacoast area. Can't imagine moving away...if you have any questions specific to the area, I'd be happy to answer or research for you!! Good luck with your decision :)

Actually, at that age, it might be easier to move in the middle of the school year. When a new kid comes into a class they receive a lot of attention and have more opportunities to make friends. If you move during the summer, he won't have anyone to play with during the school break, and he'll just be one of the crowd going into his class in the fall.

It's so interesting reading all these responses b/c I'm very interested in Maine/NH when DH retires. I'm born and raised on Long Island but feel like I was destined to be a New Englander at some point, lol. Trouble is dh can retire in 5 years but at that point my kids will be 16, 13 and 8-pretty rough ages to move. Oh well, maybe I acn stick it out here until they all finish school and we can retire there.

The fact that the company is asking/telling your DH to move and not paying ANY relocation is a big red flag to me! I know from experience that companies are paying less in relocation to new employees, but usually they'll give current employees at least something to help them move because they want to retain their services. So I agree with the concern that the job in Maine may not be "safe".... if they really wanted him wouldn't they cough up some $$? Personally I vote for commuting for a while to see what the real story is. If it helps any, friends who move fairly often say it's easier on the kids to move during the school year as they're immediately thrown in with other kids to make new friends. Good luck with your decision :goodvibes

well DH spoke with the owner of the company he works for now and he is tells DH they arent offering relocation but he will be givne more salary better healthcare, they offer in house daycare and he might not lose any vacation. It only took 45 min to get there form here. So i was thinking he could communte and if it was going good then move to maine
the schools seem good, nice houses up there, and you can walk from the company over a bridge to portsmouth it was very nice up there
also thanks for the advice about schools in the middle of the year

I suspect the new facility is less than 50 miles from the old facility. If that is the case the laws state that the company does not have to offer relocation.
