Need Advice Daughter with Mono

I had mono 9 years ago.. I would cancel the trip. I was really sick for 6 weeks and then exhausted for the next three months. Also, the diseases lies dorment for at least the next 10 years and you can have relapses, so your daughters needs to get healthy before she tries to do any activites. Also, when you have mono your organs are enlarged so it would probably not be safe to ride any rides. Hope she feels better. :)

Hi. My 11 yr old daughter was diagnosed with Mono 4 days before we left for our Disney cruise last year. The doctor said she was okay to go and she didn't have any problems. I know the cruise isn't as strenuous as Disney but thought this might help a little.

Thanks for everyone's concern, DD is doing much better, she went to school today for 1/2 day and then went home and crashed. She is doing much better but does get tired very quickly. The only other symptom is the occasional headache. She has improved over the last week and DW and I have made the decision to take the trip. We are still considering the wheelchair or elec. cart. We spoke to her Dr and he was encouraging us not to cancel.

You would have to rent a wheelchair. An ECV is not an option for children unless they use one on a daily basis at home. If you go over to the disabilities board there is some great info on where to rent a smaller wheelchair. The ones Disney has are really big and much more suited to a larger adult than an 11 year old. She wouldn't be very comfortable in them. Have fun!

Last year my son who was 1 at the time got Mono. Like your doctor told you there is nothing that can be done. We really do not know how long he had it but when I did take him to the doctors it lasted about 2 weeks after that. He was sick for about a week and a half before that. The fatigue for my son was about the first 2 weeks. I think maybe because he was so young it did not effect him like it would an older person. He was in pretty good spirits, I just had to watch that he wasn't falling all over the place and playing ruff.

I think he said that the DD with mono is 15. So, the adult-sized ones would most likely be preferable.

ETA: I do still agree with the idea of renting from off-site, because there is a LOT of walking and energy exertion involved in getting from the resort to the park and then from the park entrance to attraction areas. Renting a w/c in the parks would mean that your DD would have to waste what energy she has on getting there. Being pushed while she doses would allow her conserve her strength for attractions.

My brother had it in highschool and was literally exhausted for 8 wks. Each person is different.Be careful if you go.She is still contagious..be careful at buffets etc.I know it is not as easy to catch , but I have had some of my patients catch it at restaurants and buffets. Also,Mono causes the spleen to become quite enlarged and splenic rupture can occur with minimal abdominal trauma...I know this b/c my brother managed to do it.not a good thing to have to have emergency surgery. So be careful with any wild rides that may cause her to smash her abdomen( like Dinosaur for instance). She will definitely need many breaks, even if she does not feel symptomatic initially in the am.

Oops, my mistake.

For the reasons posted above, I would definitely do an off-site rental of the wheelchair. :thumbsup2 They are more adjustable I think too if you get one off-site. The ones at the parks are made for the average guy I think so if you're shorter or whatever, they are not very comfortable.

In my research project in nursing school, I Learned that mono sufferers aren't quarantined because MOST people are infected by non-sick carriers of mono!

Not the OP, but just got back from dr with my own daughter (who has mono as well, right now). Her spleen was re-checked today, and has begun to enlarge. So now, the dr wants me to take her bed OFF the top bunk. She is not allowed to go to gym class or recess. She's to go to school (partial days), and then is forbidden to do anything after school except rest. Also, she isn't even allowed to participate in DANCE class. The spleen usually enlarges around week 2 or 3, and stays enlarged for about 6 weeks.

Rides are DEFINITELY a no-no.

She went to school yesterday for 1/2 day and today she made the whole day and then we went shopping for clothes (every 15 y/o girl loves to shop). She had a good day and said that she was getting tired. (10:00pm) I hope that she is starting to recover. Dr checked her and spleen is not enlarged and he is happy with her recovery. Still have 4 more days for rest and recovery.

Good luck, and I hope you all have a wonderful trip! Tell your dd to be careful she doesn't overdo it, and at least she is old enough to rest at the hotel alone, whenever necessary!

We are not eating at any Buffets on this trip. I would no wish Mono on anyone.
