As a craft type of thing, while sub-teaching, I made a winter tree(trunk with bare branches) and had each child put a red thumbprint on the branches...added eyes, beak and feet and it was transformed into a tree full of cardinals. Cardinals are so common around here, and are the state bird of NC!

Once complete I put a backing on it so it looks kinda framed.
I was hoping to come up with some neat saying, phrase or title for it.

Or do you think I should just leave it as is. (It really doesn't need any words but I was hoping to add something)

I did this for 4 class rooms. It started out as something I wanted to do for my DD's teacher from the whole class. Then I ended up sub-teaching in 3 other classes within two weeks so I did it with each of those classes. The kids loved the idea and are so excited to give it to their teachers tomorrow, as a Christmas gift from the class.

To tie into personal narrative writing cirriculum, I had one of the 3rd grade classes I had write a short story(1-2 paragraphs) titled "My Cardinal". They each wrote neat stories giving their cardinals names, telling where they came from, how they ended up at the tree, etc. I bound the stories together as a "book" to go along with the art project.
I wish I had time to have my DD's class write a story also, but I just couldn't fit it all in.

So any ideas???
Should I just leave it be???

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I made Christmas cards last year using the same idea. I drew a tree trunk with a large branch coming across the card, then I had each of my 5 children put their thumbprints on the branch and added finishing touches to make a family of cardinals. My mom loved her card.

I don't know if you are allowed to mention Christmas in your school or not (in my son's school we are not - too PC :() But how about

Cardinal's Winter Song
Cardinal's Story

Do you also do brown thumbprints to represent the females? Just for the sake of accuracy?
